QUANTUM CLASS STARSHIP IN 3D

Section31 - I think my preference would be for outward canted, it just looks right straight away when I look back at it. With the inward cant it only looks right from a couple of angles and awkward from others. You're the boss though.

On the impulse engines, I didn't make them engines (just radiators) because you already had Intrepid style impulse engines on the nacelle struts, and what looked like small impulse engines on the ends of the nacelles themselves. The conversion process screws up materials and names so I didn't know what to make them.

TE Williams - I think there are a number of rendering engines for Sketchup models out there, but to be honest I've not used Sketchup much beyond the tutorials and am happy pottering with my older version of Lightwave. Plenty people here use it to good effect though, and seem to use Kerkythea the most for rendering. While Sketchup is by far the easiest 3D package I've ever used, it's not that powerful compared to some and I have to say I'm mighty impressed with the work you did on this model. I wouldn't have a clue where to start on some of the shapes. I also like some of the detail work, particularly some of your techniques on the nacelles. I'll be stealing some of those ideas for my own models next time!

If I get time tomorrow night I'll swap the nacelles around and knock out an animation so we can see it on the move. I cant do it at work, this model is a little too complex for my PC there and I can hardly move the thing.

I had reservations about the main impulse engine, as well. I modeled the port and starboard impulse engines after the Intrepid to reinforce the lineage (as with so many choices of detailing). I confirmed the three engine design with S3CT1ON31, and flipped the Intrepid style grilles 90 degrees to create the Quantum main impulse engine. The aft tips of the nacelles are just decorative 'vents.' They're deuterium vents, if you like.

I go back and forth on the nacelles, now that I look at it.

It's kind of funny, because this is clearly an Intrepid-era design. So, maybe the class was originally designed with variable-geometry pylons, which seem to have been quickly abandoned by Starfleet after the first generation of the Intrepid class. I say just pick one arrangement, and if we ever get to see the pioneering USS Quantum, then it should have variable nacelles very similar to Voyager.

NICE! Looks like a tough, fast battleship. Nice work on the 3D modeling TE Williams, and my compliments to the designer, S3CT1ON31!

Ok, started a render last night as I went to bed, here's the result this morning...

This is part of a longer animation I'll make over the next few nights, with the ship heading for Mars. Not sure what it will do when it gets there, maybe the Utopia Planitia dockyards or meet another ship or whatever. It's just to get a look at the ship itself. I've added a few more running lights just to make it look the part.

It's a combat ship--and yet, the aft view seems to say "Hospital ship" for some reason.

The discovery of the stable, artificial Bajoran wormhole in 2369 led to new insights into the creation of navigable wormholes. The Quantum Class was designed as a testbed for future deep-space explorers utilizing a modified dual navigational deflector system to instigate controlled wormhole-events in conjunction with a sister ship. Anticipating encounters with hostile aliens in unexplored space, the Quantum class was designed as the most heavily armored science vessel in Starfleet. In addition to advanced full spectrum sensor pallets, the ship is equipped with multiple photon torpedo launchers, quantum torpedo launchers, and eleven type XII phaser banks, with vulnerable parts of the hull plated in ablative shielding.

Excellent video. I do agree that the nacelles look better in the angle in the video. Can't wait to see more.m

There's more, but I'll refrain from posting it until it's all done, otherwise I'll have six or seven videos on Youtube as well as one long final one. I've rendered the next part as the ship turns to go into orbit over Mars using a newly released high detail Mars model. As it takes a while i render each shot over night, anywhere between 5 and 12 seconds of animation, and I'll slap it all together at the end. Expect the finished thing to last about a minute and be ready by the end of the week.

I'm seriously lovin' on this design.

Splendid work.

I would LOVE to see it in high res art shots suitable for swiping as desktop images. ;)

As S3CT1ON31 pointed out above in the ship's bio, the design is supposed to be a sort of contradiction, as a "heavily armed science vessel." I like to imagine the Starfleet design course involving a change in leadership or direction, after the potential high-risk rescue of Voyager was realized. Plus, the heavily windowed area on the stern is overlapped on four sides by various other hull protrusions, which gives some protection (although not from behind).

I'll have a go, but it's not a high-res design as such. It's a sketchup design I butchered to make fit in Lightwave, so it leaves a bit to be desired at the moment in terms of texturing and fixing polygon issues.

Just started rendering frames 481 to 640 of the animation, another 2 or 3 nights and I'll post up the results.

Buggeration, been sidetracked on this one. I've been making tutorials and models for Star Wars fan film stuff. Anyway, I already have 3 x 10 second clips to stitch together, I'll go render a couple more parts and upload it.
