New Nightshade cover

JD

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I just found the new cover for re-release of the TNG novel Nightshade. It's actually not down with the new releases though, I only found it because I was seeing how far back the results on the S&S website go back.
FYI if you click the browse inside, it actually shows the original cover not the new one.

IMO it's nothing to extraordinary, although I do wish they had gone back to the old TNG logo instead of the one that's been used on the relaunch. I just think putting this new logo on it might make people think that it's a new relaunch novel. But it does have the series era uniforms though, so I guess that should be enough to tell most people that it takes place during the show.

That ship already sailed with The Buried Age, The Sky's The Limit, and Slings and Arrows. The TNG logo is out, and the plain-text title is in for any TNG product from Pocket.

This link should take you right to the page.

I actually... disappointed in the cover. I was expecting something that played up Hamilton's authorship a lot more, and that looked more like an Anita Blake cover. Okay, yes, we have brown tones and cleavage, but not cleavage in extreme close-up.
Yeah, the fact that her name is in such small type, and at the bottom of the cover, would seem to defeat the presumed purpose of choosing this book above any other for reprint.

Oops, I could have sworn I put the link in there. :scream:

I guess you're right. I could have sworn they used other logos for that stuff.

The layout seems pretty tastefully balanced to me...how much more of the cover do you feel the phrase "#1 New York Times Bestselling Author Laurell K. Hamilton" should've taken up?

Much more. Christ, my name is in bigger type on LtP's cover...

I think the new cover is awful. The original cover was not great, but it fit in with the book at that time. The new cover now makes this no longer fit in. And it's awful.

Geez, another bad cover with Worf on it.

Maybe they should release a novel with a cover picture of all his various foreheads.

I find myself missing the old TNG font. I don't know if it's just being resistant to change or something more, but I wish they hadn't changed it. I mean, none of the other series' fonts have been changed, why TNG?

As for the cover... Eh. I think their faces both look a tad off, but it's not too much different from the original cover. You see a little more of their bodies, they're in different poses, the background color is different and the flowers are gone, but it looks to me to be about the same basic composition.

And it's not like I'm buying it anyway - I already own a copy of Nightshade, and I don't buy something again just because it's got different packaging (I've been doing the same with comics as they've moved into the whole 'multiple covers' thing. One cover, one issue is fine for me. It's not as if I have the money to spend on five copies of the same comic JUST to get the different cover.).

DS9 also used a different font for the post-series novels, though it has continued to use the series font for both subsequent books set during the series.

As for why change TNG's logo for pre-relaunch novels? Because Pocket hates us. ;)

I too would have expected Laurell's name to be akin to The Shat's on the cover of Captain's Glory. It's so big it screams "WILLIAM F--KING SHATNER!!!". What's the book called? What's it about? Who knows. We do know, from across the store, that Bill Shatner (sort-of) wrote it. Happily, J+G R-S get cover credit on that one, too.

This cover is still better than a lot of modern-ish ones.

Since it's being re-released with the new logo, does that make it part of the relaunch timeline? Or does it stay in the quasi-limbo of other 90's books?

This. I would've probably bought the book with the old logo. Just because I love the old logo. The new logo almost seems like it's ashamed to be Star Trek.

I don't mind the new cover at all, but I'm only buying this new edition if it has new content, such as a new foreword or afterword.

I totally missed these being re-released. It makes no sense to use the new logo. I also thought it makes made no sense w the buried age. I understand relaunch novels though. How many TNG old novels are being re-released. Are the less expensive? Most TNG novels are $3 at my used bookstore and most titles are always available. So just wondering why now?

I don't mind a new logo --the old TNG logo looks pretty dated now-- but the new one? It's practically Times New Roman.
