Things you first learned about at Trekbbs

I don't want any "People are stupid" or "Star Trek fans are geeks" sort of answers in this thread. I want posts about facts, trends, ideas, words, shows etc that you first encountered on these boards.

Two really stick out in my mind

1) Young Earth Creationism - had no idea about that this belief existed before reading about it here.

2) Slash fanfiction - I first leant about it in a Lord of the Rings thread. Someone said LOTR was so slashy and I asked what they meant. I ended up going over the Library of Moria and looking at some LOTR slash.

LOST. It was actually one of the very first things I learned about on my first day here.

Since I browse Misc. most often, I learned that some people have an unhealthy obsession with the frequency that members masturbate (there seems to be one of those threads every 6 months). But other than that, that you can indeed make friends over the internet that you've never met in person.

They should be sticky threads....

... to, um, you know... stop them.... sliding off... the, er, front page...

I also was surprised to learn here that Good Friday isn't a public holiday in the USA and that Americans don't celebrate Boxing Day.

That porn rule, #3_ something? 34? 37? Okay, maybe I wasn't paying that much attention, but I had never heard of that till TBBS.

I didn't know there was such a thing as Libertarianism before I came across it on Trekbbs.

Ah, Rule 34. Good times.

I've been hanging around this place so long, first as a lurker then as a poster, that I don't even remember what I learned when. It's all a big blur.

I had never head of threadbombs until I saw them here. Also motivational posters were new to me.
I went to my first ever meetup through TrekBBS. Havent done that since, but I can only blame myself and my busy agenda. :o

1. About the World Trade Center planes...was browsing and saw a thread about it.

2. Honor Harrington books

3. about the people who are handy

4. and most important, about the compassion of a community of strangers who have become friends

Being a total n00b to internet forums when I joined here your 2) was also news to me.

I learned that I'm not the only geek with a geekish sense of humour in the world.

I learned that simple debates about mundane things like politics or religion can make people say ugly and hurtful things to each other.

I learned a lot about how people in the US think.
As it were, this was both better and worse than I had previously thought: some of my suspicions were confirmed and some of my misconceptions were corrected but, alas, some of my worst fears were confirmed as well.

Pretty much everything I know about the internet, I have learned while being registered here, so a lot of it, in one way or another, comes from something I read here.

English slang/words.

Various porn images that I'd have rather not seen. Also, some sexual practices of which I had never heard.
