ST09 critics, why don't you like it?

It's GREEN!

Okay, I guess the way I look at it with regard to Scotty is that there's always next movie to give him some serious and heroic things to do.

As a movie of introduction, the movie worked for me. It had a lot to accomplish--appealing to a broad audience being one of them, like it or not--and in my eyes, it did so.

Warts and all.

About Scott, I believe some folks here's memories of him may be limited only to times of crisis, when the situation called for seriousness and forgetting moments his sense of humor was on display.

Oddly, many character assassinations of these people seem to lack any consideration of the fact these are younger versions.

No, I guess it's not.
It's stating the bloody obvious.

Not necessarily. It's stating what you think is obvious in your opinion. Personally, I could have done without the little green alien sidekick. Scotty didn't need a sidekick in TOS, why should he need one now? He wasn't the comic relief in TOS, why should he be now? Scotty had his comedic moments, as did all the TOS characters at one point or another. But none could have been considered the "comic relief". Unfortunately, NuScotty seems to have been assigned that label. And that's a shame. Montgomery Scott is a "miracle worker", not a comedian that happens to know a little bit about starships.

And where exactly would be the problem about Scotty being the comic relief in this movie?

Everywhere. Scotty was never the comic relief. He had humorous moments, just like all the characters. Honestly, if anyone in TOS was the comic relief, it was Chekov, not Scotty. Scotty was the "miracle worker".

Wow, Lawman makes a great, intellegent, and in-depth post making a lot of good points,

Actually no, he doesn't.

He just goes on and on lecturing us about what a fan supposed to think.

Yes. He does make very intellegently written, well thought out points. Unfortunately, most responses to his posts constst of "nuh-uh!".

They're not that much younger than their TOS counterparts. I remember Scotty quite well. He did in fact have comedic moments. But no more than the other characters were afforded. To single him out as NuTrek's comic relief is an insult to his character, IMO.

Because he wasn't one to begin with? I don't know about you, but I never saw him as a comic relief character since a lot of great Scotty episodes hardly involve him being comedic. The Doomsday Machine, A Taste of Armageddon, Wolf in the Fold, The Lights of Zetar. He had as much comical moments in the series as anyone else.

In Trek09, every thing he says and does in meant to bring out a laugh. Humor isn't what made Scotty work, it was his character. Labeling Scotty as simple comic relief is a hinderance, not a benefit.

Yeah, but in TFF and to an extent in TSFS he was the comic relief.
Star Trek was just one movie. You can't know yet how the character will be developed in the next film... though it's quite probable that he'll still be a comic element.

Scotty as comic relief works fine - he was rarely any more than that in TOS. He and Chekov were both one-note ethnic jokes most of the time (Chekov, all of the time).

For you.

Possibly. But the other characters had their comedic moments too. Scotty singled out as comic relief was not a nod to TOS as the writers may have thought.
Scotty got to be funny and save the day with his usual rabbit out of the hat trick. All that was missing was Scotty getting into trouble because of a woman. With that, the movie would have hit the TOS Scotty trifecta.

My issue with the characters as comic relief in ST09 is the same one I had with them as comic relief in TVH and TFF. It's a distinction between laughing with the characters at the irony or absurdity of a situation or laughing at them. IN TVH and TFF I often felt we were meant to laugh at the characters, Scotty in particular, and I resented that.

Scotty does have a history of comedy to him, but not solely as a comedic character. But this aspect of the character was exaggerated for ST09 so that's pretty much all the character was. Oddly, Simon Pegg was one of the few bright spots for me in this film, but I still think the comedic aspect was overdone.

Or drinking some aliens under the table.

Yes, because I have a sense of humor.

Which is why I'm enjoying these topics more than, say...you.

Comic relief is one thing. If Scotty was funny that's one thing, if he's being made fun of, that's another.

The hitting his head after stating he knew every inch of the ship was making fun of Scotty. That was a bad idea.

This is true - that was a bad idea in a movie full of bad ideas (starting with letting Shatner direct).

As a movie of introduction, the movie worked for me.

But as a movie in on it's own, it reeks. Everything is too convenient, the evil baddies don't amount to anything besides destroying whatever the heck the plot calls for, the characters are the most irritating a**holes you could muster up, and it lacks a good pace.

Did I mention the characters were a**holes? Why anyone would want to follow them, let alone serve under them is beyond me. At least with Picard, he would sympathize with you if he went too far. With NuKirk you'll get nothing.

I agree with all of that (though in certain instances...less emphatically) so why is it I can watch this movie without reenacting a warp core breach and you can't?
