ST09 fans, why did you like it?

Not this one (which is essentially just a place to list things- what could be more dull?) the other one that critics were supposed to stay out of that actually had a premise that spawned conversation.

You're referring to the the thread that asked the film's fans why they thought others didn't like it, not the thread where fans could freely state why fans liked the film.

You'll be a moderator on the same day I am, dude, and you don't get to assign people to topics simply because you start them. So chill.

I have no interest or intent to be a mod. I simply asked people to respect the intended posters. So you chill.

I concur with Temis on her points. I really liked how everyone was saluting Capt Robau, even the ones that were running stopped and saluted. Very realistic military tradition.

I liked that it went back to the iconic, original characters from TOS. It had a style, humor & energy that had been missing from Trek for a good decade or more. I thought most of the new cast worked very well (The Big 3 in particular, Karl Urban ESPECIALLY). The score was terrific. It was fun to get an origin story of sorts for the original crew. It gave Uhura more character development than she'd had in the last 40 years (and an official first name, to boot!). The first 12 minutes are both wonderfully exciting & heart-wrenching. Kirk munching an apple during the Kobayashi Maru test tickled me. And Leonard Nimoy is wonderful as always.

My criticisms?

-The new Enterprise design changed a bit too much just for the sake of change, IMO. The thing always looked off-balance to me.
-It went WAY overboard on the lens flares. Lens Flares: The Motion Picture wouldn't have that many lens flares!
-It's too bad that there wasn't a good, organic way for Shatner to make a cameo. Let's face it, the guys are getting older, and it would've been nice to get one last scene of Shatner & Nimoy as Kirk & Spock together on the big screen.
-I love Simon Pegg, but I have a feeling that Paul McGillion would've been a better overall choice for the part of Scotty.
-Oh, and I hate hate HATE the kid they cast to play Jim Kirk as a kid in the car chase scene. NO WAY do I believe that annoying little towheaded kid grows up to be James T. Kirk (the Chris Pine version OR the Shatner version)!

It was a very entertaining movie in its own right, but the fact it was an entertaining movie made with characters I could immediately recognise - even though *** gasp shock horror *** they were played by different people - made it even better. The characters are (for me, anyway) a very large part what made TOS so enjoyable. The fact they were (almost) all spot-on (Scotty wasn't so good, and I must be one of the few fans of the movie who didn't much care for Urban's attempt at McCoy) was brilliant. Hell, Pine made me actually like Kirk. I wouldn't have thought that possible. :D

To my eyes, at least, it was patently obvious how much all involved respected the original series. What made it even better was that the respect wasn't slavish or obsessive, as though they were doing homage to sacred, inviolable holy writ and had to do absolutely everything just as it was done back in the day. They paid attention to what went before and what made it work, and put their own stamp on it. No mean feat.

Along with the stuff Franklin, Nerys Myk, pookha and Temis mentioned, that's why I liked ST09. Although "enjoyed the hell out of it" would probably be a better summation in my case. :bolian:

I like that something about this movie causes something like an allergic reaction mixed with a reactor meltdown in the brains of some fans. I'm not sure exactly what it is (not having paid much attention to rants) that accomplishes this where so many have failed to inspire any passion one way or the other, but whatever it is I like it and I hope they keep doing it.

We need a thread ( or maybe there was one already) where fans of the film can state what they can understand would irk other people.

I like how close the uniforms were to the original show. I just wish the bridge were closer.

In fact, the child actor they picked to play George Samuel Kirk Jr. (who shall henceforth be known as "Johnny") would've made a much more convincing Jim Kirk. Young Spock though was bad ass. Jacob Kogan who played him was also the title role in the thriller Joshua. So its a funny continuity thing that both the younger and older version of Spock were famous for playing calculating, amoral, sociopaths.

I loved it.

I loved the Music, the Storyline was good too.

I like this new Kirk.

Course Mccoy and Scotty I liked as well.

I just like the action of the film. Didn't really care for where it fit in the star trek universe Timeline wise.

I just wish they released a Shuttlecraft toy for the 09 Toy Line.

I loved the film. All of it.

About Chekov: Anton's "Russian" accent is actually even more horrible than Walter's, but is somehow far more endearing. The "weeektor weeektor" password bit was a cringe-with-a-huge-smile moment.

I enjoyed seeing that guy getting shredded by the beam when they did the space jump scene......Olsen I think was his name....

You watch that scene and you just go "Oh,that HAD to hurt."
