Why did you like or dislike ST09?

I liked it for a great many reasons - the energy, the visual design, the cast, the scope of the thing.

Most of all, I liked seeing Trek finally start over with the original characters in their prime rather than either one more spin-off wandering further down the path of diminishing returns or another attempt to justify dragging the geriatric original cast out of retirement to implausibly crew the Enterprise one more time.

In no particular order:

Liked Spock, Chekov, Pike, Amanda, Sarek. Liked the look of the bridge, the beaming effect. Liked the music.

Disliked McCoy, Uhura. Disliked the Enterprise and Nero's ship.

Was "meh" about Kirk, Scotty and parts of the story.

Because the other two threads were based on the premise of "separate but equal. " That worked here about as well as it ever does, which is to say not at all. When you try to tell people their "place" they tend to respond defiantly.

About fifteen percent of posts there consist of lecturing people about where they're allowed to post and then arguing about that. There was no reason to create two threads, except to segregate people and provide a perch from which to snipe without folks who think differently getting uppity.

It's quite obvious, once you understand it - all you need here is a topic where people can discuss why they like or dislike a movie, not gated communities where only the "right sort" are encouraged to participate.

Anyone can post any observations here that they've posted in either of the other two topics, except for arguing about whether someone who disagrees with them ought to post.

And no one is required to post or read it, at all.

I pose this as a question. Do you folks think that the general movie-going audience gives "fun" action movies a pass on writing issues?

I've talked to a lot of people about Abrams' movie, some Trekkies. others not. While a large number of them agree with the problems I have with the movie, most everyone I have talked to said that the "Fun" factor of the movie overrides any problems they had with it.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Depends on the "writing issue." I'm pretty forgiving on plot plausibility and continuity details in watching action or sf/fantasy movies - I learned to be that way as a kid, with the old James Bond movies, 50s sf films. and certainly with TV like Lost In Space or Star Trek.

Other kinds of stuff that's more important - characterization, whether the humor is lame or not - matter a great deal more in terms of whether a movie is watchable. Whether the action and characters are motivated in a way that engages my emotions is most important.

Abrams's Star Trek works as well as TOS in most plot and plausibility respects, so it wasn't a particular challenge.

I agree with this. I don't think plot-holes make-or-break any movie and certainly some of my favourite movies have plenty of WTF moments.

I disagree with this. Relative to it's day, I believe that Abram's Star Trek takes way too many liberties with plot and plausability without the caveat of exploring the human/societal condition that TOS often had the benefit of falling back on.

Brewery engineering. Need a redesign that is a combo of what they were going for in this film and what has come before.

Bring down the lighting on the bridge.

I like the Ent ext redesign, but contend the original design would have been fine.

Captain out of the Academy? Right.

Kinda flip when conducting Nero's execution. No more of that. Kirk, in moments like that, tended to be grave and grim. As he should be. He's that kind of guy.
