Most famous film music

For a slight twist on the question, I think the greatest theme:film familiarity ratio would be Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna for Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream.

^Yeah, I'd agree with that. Being used in a trailer for a much more popular film doesn't hurt.

This won't make any lists since the majority of people have no clue where it's from, but the theme music from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story is used for many movie trailers, especially the ones that are going for uplifting and Oscar.

The famous piece from The Exorcist wasn't actually made for The Exorcist, though. It's a piece called "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield.

Like we haven't heard this before: Star Wars trilogy.

Also, Indiana Jones, Superman, James Bond, Pink Panther.

Also Spracht Zarathustra, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, although not written for that film.

Rocky's theme, "Gonna Fly Now." Much of the other Bill Conti music from the film is also very easily identifiable.

And almost forgot: The Magnificent Seven

Oh you children.

Tara's Theme, from Gone with the Wind
The theme from Exodus
The chariot race music from Ben-Hur

-Star Wars themes

-Indiana Jones' themes

-Titanic theme

-Star Trek theme (Alexander Courage's version as well as the Jerry Goldsmith version)

-Jaws theme

-Close Encounters theme

-2001's music

-James Horner's music from 'Glory' (One theme showed up for Deep Impact's trailer, another in The Professional's trailer and others).

Oh you children.

Tara's Theme, from Gone with the Wind

Again, you could hum the music and people would recognize it but not everyone would know the film whereas you hum Jaws and people instantly know the movie.

I'd add Morricone's score from The Mission to that list, with the caveat that most people don't know what they're listening to. I know the main theme has been used elsewhere (I remember it being on a Maxwell House commercial in the late 80s/early 90s), and the instrumental piece "Gabriel's Oboe" was reworked into the vocal piece "Nella Fantasia," and performed by the likes of Sarah Brightman, Celtic Woman, and Il Divo.

"Superman" (first film)

Star Wars (cues from all the films)

"Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (fanfare, though many non score fans would probably think it was originally from TNG)

"Jaws" (first film)

Indiana Jones ("Radiers March")

James Bond (theme)

"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (the theme)

"Psycho" (piece accopanying the shower murder)

"The Pink Panther" (theme)

"Star Trek [TOS]" (theme, and the famous fight music -- though they would have no idea which episode, and some would not even know from where)

"Knight Rider" (theme)

"CHiPs" (theme)

"Dynasty" (theme)

"Magnum, pi" (theme)

"Quantum Leap" (theme)

"The Rockford Files" (theme; not sure about the last generation of so though)

"The Twilight Zone" (theme, original, second theme which is the famous one)

To lesser extents (remember, non score fans aren't as knowledgable as score lovers, and not anywhere near as versed):

"Lawrence of Arabia"

"North By Northwest"

"Rudy"

"Cool Hand Luke" (Tar laying sequence piece, since NBC used to use it as a news theme)

"The Godfather" (Godfather's theme)

"Chariots of Fire"

"Plunkett & MacClean" ("The Hanging" cue, since it was used in a number of trailers, but I doubt they would know it's from this film; Craig Armstrong, composer; also, another piece was used in a number of trailers, like the first X-Files film, "Escape From Mantua" I think is the cue name)

"Titanic" (Horner's Rose theme, which was the basis of the song; play any cue with that theme music, even if it's no the song, and a number of people would know where it comes from)

"The Mission" ("Gabriel's Oboe")

Possibly the theme from "The Great Escape" (Elmer Bernstein, composer)

Before I even entered the thread, I was thinking "Star Wars Main Title Theme" by John Williams.
