Starship Mine & the Crew...

Titiuu

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
In the beginning of the episode, they're invited to Hutchinson' party, and they're behavior is... well, irritating, for lack of a better word.

They're rolling their eyes, sighing, trying to get rid of him, and their body language is full contempt. And the only thing the poor man has done is to arrange them a buffet and reception, and is doing everything he can to make them feel welcomed.

In real life, you would definately notice. In television the script was written that poor Hutchie had no idea the crew hated him, but you could definately tell.

I thought it was appalling, the way the crew decided to bond between themselves in the contempt of this man. It doesn't seem very evolved for Starfleet personnel.:scream:

Edit: Forgot to mention that Data was excellent in this. :p

I know what you mean and I liked this episode but sometimes the crew of The Enterprise could be real deuch bags to other officers. I didn't think Hutchinson was all that annoying, he was just trying to be a good host. What kills me (no pun intended) is that they really don't seem to feel bad for the guy after he gets killed.

Anyway, this behavior doesn't surprise me after how Scotty (a legend) was welcomed aboard the Enterprise.

I don't guess either of you have ever been around someone who just won't shut the hell up?

Data performed a service for the crew by keeping the man distracted.

I have. I rather like listening to people.

Wouldn't make a difference if they couldn't stop talking or were sitting alone in the corner. It's still polite to get along.

This would be one instance where I disliked the behavior of the Bridge crew. I mean, seriously, he's just someone who likes to talk. Heaven forfend he try and make you feel comfortable.

Scotty was annoying, the Enterprise crew (especially Geordi) was far more tolerant than I would have been if he had tried to tell me how to do my job.

That plus we don't really know how history remembers him outside of the engineers' circle. Yes, the main characters seemed to have heard of him. But we know of historical figures who aren't legends, just names in the history books.

People always crack at the TNG crew being so perfect, but then rail them for being human. I don't think any of them hated the guy. If someone is an incessant babbler, they often times are babbling about the same pointless stuff, & likely even forget they told you something already. That is downright dull, especially for an organized reception, that obviously wasn't their first, with the guy, at least not for Picard & Beverly, anyway

I don't think they were overly rude. Geordi, Beverly, & Deanna were polite & tolerant enough. Data was the life of the party, & Riker, who always roles his eyes & exudes negative body language anyway, was rather crafty at steering Hutch & Data together, showing again, how much better he is at social graces, than Picard, who was really the only rude one, by pawning the guy off on his crew, & then skipping out on everyone. Funny how Picard is the better diplomat though

As for them not caring about him dying, I just think it was written that he no longer be mentioned, from then on, so they could focus on the hostage situation, at hand

I will admit though, they should have skipped the saddle gag at the end. A bit crude to be sitting around joking about Picard ditching the dead guy's party

I don't think they hated him, but his personality was overbearing.

Nobody in the crew hated Lwaxana, but Picard didn't like it when she was on board, since she was overbearing too. i think Picard, as a wise person, would have realised that in life you accept everybody as they are.

This. Couldn't have said it better. Especially the bolded part.

They REALLY weren't that rude. "Rude" would have been to actually tell him to shut up. And frankly, he WAS annoying, I thought. Exceedingly so. What, they're not allowed to just find someone unpleasant to be around?

As for after he died, they were hostages from that point until the end of the ep. For any of them to spend any time mourning him wouldn't have made sense. These are trained Starfleet officers, and their top priorities at that point were survival/escape, and determining what the terrorists' goals were.

All of that said, while it's a great ep overall, I agree about the saddle gag at the end. That WOULD have been a good time for Hutchinson's death to be brought up, and the whole "One Starfleet officer and a bunch of terrorists are dead following a barely averted attempt to steal a volatile compound for the production of really vicious weapons, but everything worked out great, so let's chat and joke about Picard's saddle!" bit at the end was a little off-putting. Reminded me too much of the really bizarre endings to some TOS eps where the bridge crew would laugh the ep into the end credits following some really horrific events, or the death of dozens of redshirts, or what have you.

Welcome to television.

It's like Frasier and his sound-proof kitchen.

indolover brings up a good point about Lwaxana. I think everyone aboard actually liked Lwaxana. She's a very friendly person, but she is also overbearing, brazen, & rather intrusive with her telepathy, & therefore people were uncomfortable around her, & even with just the mention of her coming on board, especially people like Picard & Worf

But I don't think anyone disliked her

It was funny though, how Deanna tosses that one out as a ploy to get Picard to vacation on Risa

Or Roseanne. All they ever had to do was walk two steps away into the living room or kitchen and suddenly nobody could hear them, even though the two rooms were basically one large open room.

What makes you think Hutchkinson didn't know he was more or less universally loathed?

Timo Saloniemi

I've known people like Hutch too, and while I'm certainly not a member of the Enterprise's command staff, I doubt I'd be able to conceal my irritation with him. Having a conversation with me is one thing, going on about trivialities I have little interest in is something completely different.

heh i recently rewatched this episode after having started voyager and i was so floored by picard's murder of tuvok i didn't even notice they were being douchey on the planet. damned recurring actors distracting me. i was like wtf tuvok! what have you done!?

Tim Russ is the only recurring actor i can think of right now that has been in many of the different series as different people.

or...

the same very old person, although I think he is a human on the bridge of the enterprise-B.
