Lost Era -- Tzenkethi War

Is there any news on "The Lost Era" book that would cover Benjamin Sisko's time on the USS Okinawa under the captaincy of James Leyton. Or is this 11th book in "The Lost Era" series covering the Tzenkethi War still in limbo or has it been canceled?

I don't think anything has really been mentioned about since before The Buried Age came out, and with all of the craziness now, I doubt we will again.

I seem to recall reading that that story was Marco Palmieri's pet project, and that when he was let go, the project was pretty much shelved. Someone more knowledgable can correct me if I'm wrong, though.

The last time this came up, I remember someone saying that it didn't even get out of the planning stage; it was just mentioned at the same time as TBA was announced and since that book was released, everyone expected the Sisko novel to follow.

Pity really. :(

Well, sort of. The Tzenkethi War project and the Picard's-missing-years project were announced at around the same time, but it was a while before Marco pegged me to do the Picard book and the project became The Buried Age.

The Lost Ear war I want to read isn't the Tzenkethi, it's the Star Trek versions of the Man-Kzin(/M'Dok/Kythari) wars. Reconcile that with canon!

^I would rather that the Kzin stay out of future Star Trek projects. Cat people just seem so overdone now and there is already fiction for Niven's Man-Kzin war.

What is the conception of the Tzenkethi for the Typhon Pact novels? Bipedal cats or armored lizard things? Or something else entirely?

Marco and I discussed ideas for this book before he was RIFed, but without him to push the idea, I think it's fallen by the wayside for now.

May I ask what some of the ideas were for the book? How did you and Marco invision the Tzenkethi? As Larry Niven's Kzinti or a variation thereof? Or are you not permitted to disclose this information under an NDA etc.?

We only discussed it in loose terms; as for the look of the Tzenkethi, we hadn't settled on any concrete definition.

There is no connection between the Tzenkethi and the Kzinti; that's just something some fans imagined based on the vague similarity of the names. According to Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who created them for "The Adversary," he envisioned the Tzenkethi as possibly being "heavily armored lizard things," something like a Tyrannosaurus rex with heavier arms.

If you look at my earlier post, I am asking whether the Tzenkethi in the novels are based on Niven's Kzin or Wolfe's 'heavility armored lizard things". I have no idea if Marco or James ever heard Wolfe's comments concerning the Tzenkethi when they discusssed the Lost Era novel depicting the Tzenkethi War. I know you asked what Robert Hewitt Wolfe had in mind on the Ex Isle Forums in late 2006 and that you looked up both the Hakazit and the Tsankth. I know that if you had written the race you would have portrayed them as something like "Tyrannosaurus rex with heavier arms." Is this the depiction that has been agreed upon for the Typhon Pact novel series? What did you guys choose?

^ However, I did see him at the bookstore recently, sitting in the cafe with his laptop pretending to be one of those erudite writer folks, studying books containing detailed anatomical diagrams of hamsters. Big, muscled, ninja-like hamsters. With go-go boots. And eye-patches.

There might've been more, but that's when I chose to back slowly out of the store, and run like hell.

The go-go boots are iffy, but I see nothing wrong with the rest. :D
