My "little" project

mythme

After four years of watching, re-watching, writing, editing, tweeking and re-re-watching, I have finally completed my own Star Trek chronology.

It started as a whim. The old Official chronology is woefully out of date and my intent was to simply update it. During my task I came to realize that the offical version had a lot of omissions and errors beyond information that had not yet been revealed at the time.

So now I have...well...a TOME. Its over 840 pages long. It contains ONLY canon information covering the Big Bang throughout all the series (including TAS) and goes right on through to the far distant future. I've also included a small "alternate timeline" section to cover the new movie.

I would gladly submit it for publishing consideration but as we know, there's been a freeze on "non-fiction" Trek books for quite some time. I was hoping this would ease up following the success of ST XI but nadda so far. With all the effort I put into it, I would like to share it somehow. So my question is...

Now what do I do with this?

^There are many many alternate timelines in the trekverse. But personally, I think it's a waste of time. Memory Alpha has that licked, down to tons of pages analyzing every canon fact. You basically made something that has been made already.

That said, some people might like to read something like that in book or eBook format instead of hopping from article to article on a website.

Sounds like a lot of time and effort put into the project. You could put it on a website for people to enjoy. If you haven't done so already, you could look to illustrate it.

Look up "chronology" or "timeline" on Memory Alpha and tell me how complete it is. Its not; not even close. Its not even very well cross-referenced.

As for timelines, most episodic instances are self-contained and are usually resolved by the end of the show. The new film creates a whole new universe so-to-speak which will perpetuate itself.

Does any book related to Star Trek have to go through one publishing company, I'm not sure?

If not, I'm sure there's someone out there who would publish it.

It has far more information than I'd like to know  it got facts going back thousands of years.

And there is a reason why many bookstores don't carry trek tech manuals anybody. Nobody's buying especially when they can find info for free online...

And there's a reason why I never bought one of those trek encylopedia when Voyager and DS9 was still on the air. They get dated and moot with every passing episode, show and movie. We probably will have more movies and perhaps new shows. It's more pratical to have a websites with frequent updates.

That's great Mythme! :)

I'm working on the great Star Trek encyclopedia myself, incorporating all of canon and the modern non-canon novel continuity, plus anything from older novels, RPGs, etc, that doesn't contradict that modern novel continuity. Even if the novels stopped being produced tomorrow it'd take me a decade or so to complete, I bet, but I'm making good progress and I love working on it. If there are two irreconcilable interpretations, I choose one. It's intended to be the most comprehensive Trek encyclopedia...well, ever. And it's all mine

A work like this has no chance at all without an agent. Even then, I suspect most of the reference works are invited or commissioned by The Company.

If I were serious about publication, I would contact Mike Okuda, see if he would give the name of his agent, and submit it through that agent. You might have a snowball's chance in hell of it seeing print.

If you are satisfied with having done it for the love of it and want to share it, then put it up on the web in whatever format. Putting it into Kindle or iPad might be as complicated as print publication, since it will probably have to get copyright clearance and The Company will want its share.

Good luck, and hope to see it someday. Myself I would like to see it in webpage or some hypertext format, so stuff could be linked ad infinitum.
