Dermot Mulroney is NBC's new Jim Rockford.

Rear Admiral
"In his first regular TV role, Mulroney is set to play the iconic private eye in the network's updated take on the hit 1970s drama that starred James Garner in the title role. The new Jim Rockford is described as "slightly crumpled, wry humored, cynical, world weary, compassionate when it's called for and easily irritated by morons."
His troubled past includes doing some time as a convict and as a cop.
Aside from an arc on NBC's "Friends" in 2003, "My Best Friend's Wedding" co-star Mulroney has been focused on features, most recently appearing in "Burn After Reading."
NBC's "Rockford Files" was written by "House" creator David Shore, who is executive producing with Steve Carell."

Mulroney is no James Garner but few modern actors are of Garner's calibre.

He's (Mulroney) a watchable enough actor and is probably in the right, crumpled, good-looking but not too good-looking, been-around-the-block mould. I think Dennis Quaid would have been the ideal new Rockford but they could have done worse.

I wonder if it would help if they made him Rockford Jr. and brought back Garner, rather than a full-on reboot. Hawaii 5-0 was going to be a continuation at first, but now it's a reboot as well.

I had suggested somebody like Ben Affleck for the role but Mulroney seems a good choice.
However, given the state of television today the show probably won't go to five episodes.:(

Rocky, Rockford's Dad was a character in the original. Maybe Garner can play him, just like he played Maverick Senior in the Mel Gibson movie.

My thoughts exactly. This probably won't even make it out of the gate.

Well it's on NBC, so if it fails they'll just replace it with The Conan O'Brien Primetime Show.

What it needs is whiz-bang CGI close up's of gunshot wounds, babes in labcoats(preferably babes with just a hint of sexual ambiguity),maybe a teenage computer geek.

And vampires....lots and lots of sexy vampires.:(

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

This one's a big who-cares for me. Jim Rockford isn't any kind of icon to me, I barely remember that show.

However, if they ever DARE to remake Columbo, mark my words, heads will roll! On spikes! Down a river of lava into a pit of flames spewing forth from the very pits of HELL!

I'm suprised you barely remember Rockford then, since Columbo started a few years before Rockford did (BTW, Temis--did you know that the producers originally wanted Bing Crosby to play Columbo? Or that the character was based on the police detective in the novel "Crime and Punishment?).

I don't know about this remake/reboot of Rockford, since the character was really James Garner. I like the idea above, have Mulroney play the son and Garner the original.

I believe Mr. Garner is in ill health, so I don't think him being on the show in any capacity is realistic. Apparently he had a stroke in 2008.

Suprisingly I'm looking forward to this, although I'm sure it won't go past season 1. With the exception of Castle (which is just so damn amusing) I can't stand police procedurals anymore. The original Rockford was different, a little bit edgy but also a lot of fun, so if they don't take this too seriously it could be a good show. That said, I don't trust NBC to do the right thing, so it's probably doomed.
The idea of Garner playing Rocky is brilliant. I didn't know he had a stroke, but if he's on the show it'll be must see for me.
