Why do people think 3-d is a fad? Its the future of TV and Movies.

We'll see.

3D's been around for decades now. It was a fad then, and I don't see that changing to any great degree. What makes this so different?

All the people that cry that they dont want their favorite new movies shot in 3-d can still watch them in boring 2-d...

I can do without the silly glasses and the reddish/blue tint, thank you very much.

Do yourself a favor and see Avatar, to see what can be done with 3D.

^ Like I said, I saw the IMAX Space Station movie in 3D. That did look very nice, I admit. But it didn't just require glasses, it required a complete HEADSET to view.

If every 3-D film was made with the craft of Avatar, then no problem. But what about the gimmicky 2-D films which have been converted to 3-D (like Harry Potter 6). That's just cashing in on a fad. Or the gimmicky 3-D films which have the usual array of stuff flying at the camera instead of a sense of death (Journey to the Center of the Earth). That's just doing the same things with 3-D that have always been done with it, which is why it has never caught on.

Oh, yes, there will be a lot of gimmicky 3D coming up... Many films are being converted to 3D in post, which can be very risky. It will be interesting to see how "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans" will appear, since they are the first post-Avatar films in 3D. Both converted, unfortunately, but hopefully it will not be too gimmicky. Although the "Alice" trailer did have a LOT of stuff in the face of the audience. (Moreso than the entire 2.5hrs of Avatar had)

Whatever...these movies sucked...unless Transformers 3 is a reboot and like the G1 cartoon with a different cast...it is gonna suck.

Besides, I don't exactly have ten grand to blow on a new 3D TV and Blu-Ray player anyway right now. So the whole thing is moot, for me at least.

And that's the whole point.

The 3D craze is an attempt to combat the uber home entertainment setups and draw people back to the theaters.

Also, you can't pirate 3D.

No, that's not what it is at all, it's not 1983. They're not talking about shit flying out at the screen at you, they're talking about the differences in depth of field perspectives, lighting, and a lot of other things you have to take into account when shooting a modern 3D movie like Avatar. Cameron has talked at length about the differences between shooting Avatar and his past movies.

Which still doesn't make a great movie if the focus is on humping dogs, Devestator's junk, and Megan Fox running in slow motion instead of some sort of comprehensible plot.

Does anyone really believe that 1000's of hours of remaking Howard the Duck into 3D so there are differences in depth of field perspectives, lighting, and a lot of other things will make it a better movie?

Well, this is true, the Transformers movies aren't exactly high-class cinema, but I do think they are a lot of fun and have a sort of "awesome" quality to them, at least visually. 3-D in the vein of Avatar would just make a Transformers movie that much more awesome.

I know a lot of people didn't like the Transformers movies (then again, we're getting a 3rd one, so obviously a lot of other people DID like them), but I think they're great fun.

I think it's funny when people give Megan Fox a pass but harp on Shia LaBeouf. It's merely 'cause she's hot, and nothing else. Fact is, Shia is a really talented actor who's just been given fuck all to work with. But he sells the existence of those machines, which is not an easy acting job.

Don't get me wrong, though, those movies are some of the worst major studio films to come out in decades. It's just that Shia is the best thing about them.

To an extent I agree. The main problem with Shia LaBeouf in Transformers is that his character sucks. Sucks. Sucks. He actually did a half decent acting job in Crystal Skull, though that movie was still ass. You know, the guy really should look into being in better movies.

I like the parents, the mother is awesome. I don't even mind Shia's character, I don't find him much unlike a few guys I knew in HS.

TF1 was quite enjoyable, I liked it. TF2 less so, a decidedly "C" grade action movie. But man, if you can't think of 20 movies off the top of your head that sucked worse you haven't been exposed to much film. There are soooo many baaaad movies out there. Heck, I liked TF2 better than 1 or 2 of the SW prequels for example.

This Island Earth WITHOUT the robots in the corner making fun of the movie was better than ROTF.

I've never seen the movies Aragorn mentioned (for good reason), but I have no doubt they were worse than Transformers.

Remembering the movies I've seen... and if they were worse than ROTF... Romeo + Juliet (Leonardo DiCaprio) was much worse that ROTF. Oh, and Congo (Michael Crichton) does dip just below ROTF as well, but not by much.

The technology has come leaps and bounds, and it was never possible in the 1950s to put 3D in the living room. The blue/red glasses and funny looking images turned people off in general, but I find the new glasses to be exceptional and unobtrusive to viewing.

I don't think it will replace 2D, but I certainly think the time has come for 3D to be a lot more common in the theatres and in the home than 1-2 movies like Jaws 3D every few years. And distributors love it because it's much more difficult to pirate and it gets people back into the theatres and paying even MORE for tickets. It isn't going anywhere at this point, not after the success of Avatar and even all of the recent 3D animated movies like UP! and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

Toy Story 3D is going to break some records I'd imagine.
