First Eleventh Doctor DVD coming in June (UK)

According to the Doctor Who News Page, the first "vanilla" UK release of the first three episodes of Series 5 is set for release in early June, per Amazon.co.uk.

A few things of note: the release will be issued in both Blu-Ray and DVD, the first time a "vanilla" has been issued this way. But it won't be completely vanilla as apparently a featurette is going to be included.

Secondly, as the News Page points out, BBC Video is calling it Series 5, not Series 1 or Series 31. The debate continues.

(My fellow North Americans can pretty much ignore this, of course. Although BBC Video did issue a couple of the Eccleston vanillas over here a few years back, we're probably gonna have to wait till the end of the year before we see the new season on DVD/Blu. Maybe -- there wasn't a long interval between Children of Earth and the Specials airing and the box set, so unless Series 5 is split in the UK, we could see a box set sooner.)

I'd say the debate pretty much ends. The only place the Series Number would ever really appear in public is on the DVDs and they've gone with Series 5. (Whatever Moffat tried to claim it was always the 5th full series of the revived Doctor Who.)

All that matters to me is that the BBC isn't calling it Series 1 as was originally reported, because that would have been just stupid, full stop.

Amazon's release dates can't be trusted all the time.

Agreed, but the fact they have details about the release itself makes this more reliable. Amazon doesn't tend to make up releases; and as anyone who stood in line back in 2007 to buy the Remembrance of the Daleks Special Edition on DVD in North America and had to wait until yesterday to finally get it, even the BBC dates are subject to change.

I think the date is a bit late, to be honest. The vanillas usually are well underway before the season ends. I'm more expecting a late April date for this.

Vanilla is another term for bare bones...I'm guessing that the series five box set could be released in the winter? Christmas time? Or maybe early next year?

Going by precedent, they've usually had the box sets out in the UK by late fall, with North American release early in the new year. However, all bets are off this year because both the Specials and Children of Earth had VERY short intervals between broadcast and release (like, about 48 hours in the case of Children of Earth).

The fact BBC Video is still releasing the "vanillas" (which is actually not the correct term to use here because there will be a bonus feature with this first release (which presumably will be included in the box set later) would suggest fall before the UK gets a release, but the way BBC America and Space handle things, I wouldn't be surprised to see a set in the stores by summer.

There's also nothing saying the "Volume 1, 2 and 3" sets can't be released anyway. Note that BBC Video releases Waters of Mars and End of Time on their own at the same time they put out the box set.

The only show that seems to be dragging its feet is Sarah Jane Adventures. Series 3 (with David Tennant's swansong as the Doctor) isn't apparently scheduled for release until around Halloween.
