24: Day 8 - Midnight - 1:00AM - Discussion and Spoilers

I agree with Trekker--this episode was FUCKING TERRIBLE, easily the worst one yet in a season that's served up a lot of shit sundaes.

Why in the blue hell is the episode ending with Redneck DiCaprio and Evil Daniel Faraday being foiled like a trashy Lifetime movie of the week???

Every single character on the show including Jack and Renee is being wasted with boring, "we're doing this to fill up 24 episodes, not because anything interesting can come of it" plotlines. I'd take the big, dumb action movie that later seasons of 24 have turned into over this crap any day of the week.

24 has had some bad, and good, "B-plots" during the day but this BS with Starbuck is just horrible. The "action movie" stuff is why I tune into this show. Not random secondary character I've never seen before and her stupid troubles with some douchebag white-trash ex-boyfriend. Hell even Chloe has been sidelined for this nonsense.

That storyline needs to end. NOW. And to save this season the A-Plot better damn-well kick into gear and MORE CHLOE!

Well I guess we have a horse race going here - who's stupider, the terrorists who don't see anything amiss about the guy who stops arguing abruptly and asks where he can make a private phone call, or Dumb Dana? Now I don't feel so idiotic about bailing on the first few episodes to watch Heroes. :rommie:

There hasn't been much discussion of it, but the most outrageous event in this episode was the scapegoating of Renee Walker, followed by her post-midnight interview by the Department of Justice lawyer. Yes, 24 has to "pad" episodes once in a while (or maybe a lot), but this was a little much for me. I thought it was rather convenient that the lawyer arrived so soon with a file containing Renee's complete history, updated to include pictures of Vladimir's fresh corpse. Does CTU send out pictures of all their kills as soon as the bodies are identified? That would seem to be a careless way of handling sensitive information. Also, the DoJ lawyer seemed very prepared for the interview. When did she have time to study the file and become such an expert on Renee's career?

Loved it when Jack grabbed the lawyer by the throat and slammed her against the wall. We can all identify with Jack's moral outrage in this matter.

One of the many problems with the world of 24. They don't have enough guys for a swat team but they can get a DOJ lawyer on the scene in less than ten minutes to protect the rights of some scumbag.

At 1 in the morning none the less.

I'm glad to see I am not alone in my distaste for this episode.

I am glad to see Redneck DiCaprio and Evil Daniel Faraday (love the names) get killed off. However I fear the next step for the Dana storyline will be more scenes with her and Cole shooting awkward looks at each other. Maybe a BSG can tell me what's so good about Katee Sackhoff.

The best scene of this episode was Jack warning the guard to put his gun down or he'd get hurt. I was rolling on the floor in laughter at that one.

Initially, I kinda liked this episode because something happened, but the more I think about it, yes it sucked. For one, I want to compare this episode to any episode of CSI. In CSI, a case is solved, TV time, withen the hour, but in the ficticious time, you can go a couple days, or at least with episodes I've seen. So here we are with 24, and in two hours time (Again, we're dealing with 120 minutes), the DOJ has all this information on Renee to make a conviction that I am like :wtf:. How come it takes CSI a few days to solve a case even though it's usually solved at the end of the hour, but it takes the DOJ 1 hour to get all the information she can get and we don't see how or where she got it. I guess it was from CTU, and she did have a lot of background, but still, that is so much information in so little time.

As for Dana/Jenny, is that crap over yet? The end with her going to embrace Kevin might be one of the worst scenes 24 has ever done. Just a minute ago she was going to kill both of them herself and now she is embracing the guy she loathes? Did I miss something?

Liked the stuff with Jack, but my one major issue with this season (And there are many) is that we're in episode 9, and what exactly is happening? What is the threat, and what is this show trying to go for when the Clock strikes 4:00 PM the next day. I just wonder if this show would be beneficial if it was just called 13 or something. Take half a day, tighten up the storyline, and let's go. Oh, and with so many character changes, other than Hastings, I don't really like any of the new characters this season.

I'm going to say this now. I'm giving 24 either till Sunlight or whenever Fox has the traditional 2 hour midseason event (They typically do at this time don't they?). That's deep enough into the season to really make a judgment call on if this is a good season or not. If they pick up the pace and actually show us what this season is about, than I'm going to stick with it until the conclusion. If it's more of this same crap with no sense of direction or nothing to really make things personal for any of the characters I like (Which is either Renee or Jack or even President Taylor), than I'm done. So far, my grade for this season would be a D. That's not good for a series in it's 8th, and probably final, season.

Well, on the evidence note, keep in mind. It is 2015. ;)

But, yeah, the main terrorist/whatever storyline needs to pick up and get into gear. Other than vauge Russian seperatist sects and this Middle Eastern State is anyone yet clear on what this season's threat is?

Yeah there's nuclear materials floating around but that's about it.

Just to comapre:

This season started at 4PM it is now 1AM so nine hours have passed. Let's see where we were in other seasons at this point:

Season 1 at 9:00AM - The plot had moved along quite nicely, at 9AM Jack had already pulled the ruse with "killing Nina", had performed the assassination attempt on Palmer at the power plant, and hitched the ride with the sassy waitress and Teri has been taken to Gaines' compound.

Season 2 at 5:00PM - Jack's dealt with Nina, this episode ends with Nina taking Jack as hostage. The attack on CTU has happened, George has been infected with the radiation, and Kim has been picked up by the police in the stolen Psycho Dad car. We know the season's threat is the nuke.

Season 3 at 10:00PM - Jack's broken Salazar out of prison and has fled to Mexico. Tony's been shot, undergone surgery, and is back in CTU. We've had the whole mis-lead with the Gaiel, and we've know the season's threat is the VIRUS.

Season 4 at 4:00PM - Jack's held up a gas station, he's met back up with Tony who's helping Jack and Audrey out, we've had the attack on the terrorist cave compound were they're holding the kidnapped SCDUS. While we've little idea on what the "big plot" is (we've already has the Nuclear McGuffin and the SCDUS kidnapping) in this season that ended up as little surprise. Oh, season 4. If you weren't so cheesey...

Season 5 at 4:00PM - Main characters have been killed, Jack framed, Jack reutrns, he's saved an airport, got-in with the terrorists and released the nerve gas in the mall, gotten back into action with CTU and Martha Logan is in the car with the Russian dignitaries, whom the Preisdent knows will be attacked by the terrorists under threat of another major attack on the US.

Season 6 at 3:00PM - Jack has been called back into action, nuke has gone off in Valencia, we know the connection with Graem Bauer/The Bluetooth Group and the season's bads, and Daddy Bauer has killed Graem. Jack's son, er. "nephew" has been taken hostage and we've had the whole ordeal with Jack working with Terrorist Bashir and Morris has been kidnapped and used to rig up the other nukes, and then recovered.

Season 7 at 5:00PM - A season that moved a bit more in pace with the first season but still by this point the First Gentleman has been kidnapped, and recovered, Dubaku has stolen the season's MacGuffin, and it has been recovered, Tony is back in the game and Rene is taking her steps to the Jack Side. (Incidentialy at the end of the next episode we learn about the "big attack" coming soon which ends up being The White House.)

So here we are, nine episodes into Season 8 and where do we stand?

Jack's been called back into the game, Rene has been called back into the game, there was some to-do about the attack at the UN, which was averted, and we spent several episodes with Jack and Rene tracking down the Russian Tire Store Mob to get the nuclear materials which are now in the third set of hands over the course of the day. Has really that much happened this season so far when we look at past seasons? Are we as far along as we should be? And, again, I have to bring up about all the time wasted on the stupid subplot with Starbuck and Redneck DiCaprio.

I thought the White House plot happened sooner. Surprised it's so late. That whole White House thing happened in the special 2 episode midseason night so maybe that's coming up soon here.

Juma's team storms The White House in the "7:00PM - 8:00PM" hour of Season 7. (The 12th episode of the season and the second episode of the two-hour mid-season event.)

The White House ordeal ends in the following hour the following week.

That two-hour episode aired the first week of March, which would be this coming Monday this year and no double-episode event is scheduled. Not sure if they're going to do one this year.

What gets me is how Dana & Cole have absolutely NO chemistry as a couple. They're just the bug-eyed twins as far as I'm concerned. I agree with whoever it was up there who said they don't get Sackoff's appeal. She is dull as powder, & Prinze is just as bad.

I've just finished watching Season 4 for the first time, & boy do I miss Tony & Michelle! Now THERE was a romantic couple with chemistry. This season is suffering from a dire lack of sympathetic characters. At least I like President Taylor - Keeler & Logan both were just horrible. Renee & Taylor are the only two recently-added people I've cared anything for.

And we need better evil people! I miss Nina & Sherry!

Yeah this episode kinda blew chunks.

I really wish they would have used the Episode ending split screen. 24 feels weird without it. Speaking of, they had 2 shrinking split screens in-episode. Havent seen those since what? Season 3?

While I can understand people being surprised that we haven't had any really big action set piece like the White House attack, I for one don't want to see that sort of rank stupidity repeated.

On the other hand, this episode was monstrously dull. No way did Hick Boy deserve the silent clock treatment - his death is cause for celebration.

On the other hand, a loud clock would have meant that he could come back.

Ya, I'm going to have to agree here. They look too much like they are acting when they are together. It's distracting and almost painful to watch at times. At least that subplot is over..

Yeah, especially how easy it is to bring people back death in this show.

Red Neck DiCaprio did not get a silent clock. He did, however, get a straight-to episode out without the ending split-screen. (Usualy done to not break the "tension" of the end of the episode)

My mistake, I wasn't paying a great deal of attention right at the end due to extreme boredom.

At least that subplot is over..

I hope you're correct, but I don't think you will be.

Get ready for Round 2, featuring Cole being jealous over Dana's reaction to her douchebag boyfriend being stabbed and Dana somehow trying to justify it to him. More pathethic Lifetime Movie of the Week hijinks inbound!
