Prodigal Daughter was so irritating...

John200

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I just couldn't sit though it again when I recently bought the series.

One reason is Dax's family.

The mother was a complete Nazi ,and the brothers were just to stupid to live.

Why did they fear her so much?

Their men for God sakes!

No wonder Dax left ,and never turned back.

 I don't mean to be rude, so please excuse me, but if you're so surprised to see a woman "ruling the roost" at home, and the men of the family wary of her and bossed around by her, you need to see more families in more situations in more cultures.

Remember, too, that Yanas is both leader of the family in the traditionally female domestic sphere and in the traditionally male sphere of politics, business and the family's interactions with wider society. She has double power, in a sense. She has mother's domestic authority and father's political/business authority.

Technically it wasn't "Dax" who left. Ezri didn't have the symbiont then. ;)

But anyhow...if it is what the two brothers grew up with, I'm not too suprised that they tolerate it.

Now...I personally like the episode, if only because of how much it revealed about Ezri's life story and family.

Now...on Yanas, Ezri's mother: While I would not call her a Nazi, I admit she is a woman who is obsessed with security, and therefore control. It is worth noting that Ezri notes to Sisko that Yanas freaked out when other business started out-performing the Tigan mines.

Note also how Yanas rants to Ezri about how much she "sacrificed" for the family. The episode shows that in her obsession for security--for the family as well as the company--Yanas has sacrificed more than she could imagine...including Janel to the Orion Syndicate...and Norvo to the slammer.

But the "sacrifice" rant reveals how she has ruled--and how she has controlled Ezri's brothers: through guilt. One gets the impression that Janel had it drummed into him that it somehow was his fault if anything went wrong in the company. Thus, when problems started showing up, and the Syndicate came to make an offer he couldn't refuse, Janel felt it was his duty to accept.

As for Norvo...well, we find out along with Ezri how "the constant drumbeat of criticism" slowly broke him down, until despair became the norm for him.

What set Ezri apart from her brothers is that she refused to be hurt. She refused to accept any feelings of guilt--and left to seek her own way.

O'Brien conveniently showing up is kind of irritating, in the sense that New Sydney looks to be smaller than the city it's named after, instead of being, you know, planet-sized. Still, it was good to see him, so my feelings on that plot contrivance are mixed.

I sort of liked Prodigal Daughter. It's far from my favorite DS9 episode, or even my favorite Ezri episode, however.

lol I wasn't surprised by it ,but it didn't stop me from hating the episode none the less.

I never really understood the hate this episode seems to get. Its not great, but compared to the worst episodes of the other series its Shakespeare.

^Funny you should bring up Shakespeare--because frankly, Yanas Tigan strikes me as something of a Lady Macbeth.

I don't like the episode, but not really for those reasons. This could have been our best ever look at Trill society, but instead Ezri's family were indistinguishable from human beings. What's more, Colm Meaney was really wasted here, but then, he was wasted in Season 7 as a whole for some reason.

I think that's kind of a narrow view because Star Trek isn't about an extrapolation of possible alien cultures. The aliens in Star Trek are a stand in for every human trait, at least thats the way I see it. If they tried to write a "real" alien culture it might be pretty dull, drama wise.

I liked PD because I think everyone can relate on some level to the kind of family Ezri comes from. Also, it was nice to see some background on her family which we never got for Jadzia, odd. Finally, I don't think O'Brien wasn't totally wasted here because he played his part.

This episode was mainly about Ezri and her family, not the chief and it was nice. One of DS9's strengths was telling strories about family and this was a very nice story.
