Things you're shocked people don't know

i was at the bar last month and my friends didn't know what a rickroll was. was it that they hadn't been on the internet for the past 3 years? no. they just were not aware.

I just learned what this was a few months ago. I never watch anything on YouTube, so I had no reason to ever come across it.

:brickwall::brickwall::brickwall::brickwall: Dude...I don't know what that is. I'm amazed at what people expect to be common knowledge. Lot of the shit mentioned in this thread isn't. Patrick Stewart is not that famous. Heck, not even William Shatner is all that well known. And most of the gas stations I've been to allows fueling before paying, all over the east coast from Virginia to New Hampshire and in Ohio. That woman could have come from a small town where one can fill a tank before paying plus she might be one of those people who doesn't travel much.

That people don't really know how to survive outside of civilisation. If your city was attacked and you had to fend for yourself you would probably be killed, or starve, or die of dehydration, or freeze, or commit suicide.

How absolutely vital it is to be fit and physically strong. Running doesn't just make you 'fitter', if you don't go running you are unfit. If you don't do resistance training then you are not a man.

That people are so deeply concerned with how they are regarded, they have a desperate need to be liked. A person expressing his individuality has to be able to be disliked and even hated.

People don't know how to think properly, read properly, live properly.

Dude.... Millions of people never went camping. Yes, it would be a good skill...well a good set of skills. But most of us don't have the means, resources, time oh yeah and anybody to really teach us how to be prepared. How does one decide that someone is prepared enough? Nobody will be prepared. It is foolish to assume one can be prepared.

It is absurd to be surprised/shocked that people don't know those skills in this day and age.

Is this supposed to be a joke? That learning to be self-sufficient is anachronistic? What the hell are you talking about it?

Anyone can link to Youtube -doing a proper rickroll requires being able to make someone click a link that installs an uncloseable pop-up (playing the song LOUD) on their computer so that a reboot is necessary in order to get rid of it.

I have not been rickrolled properly nor do I know anyone who has.

People don't know how to think properly, read properly, live properly.

I have to marvel at the sheer hubris required to make this kind of statement.

I suspect you're looking to pick a fight so that you can feel further vindicated in your alienation from your inferiors.

No. Thinking it is common knowledge is absurd. That's the point of this thread. Are you really shocked that so many people don't know how to grow their own food or hunt deer. That has been true for DC residents in the past century. I might just take a knife and make a spear to hunt deer in Glover Park if DC is nuked.

He might be like the guy who stood up and screamed at the DC cops about how he'd "FUCK THE DC GUN LAW" because he ought go out with a gun, during a safety workshop on campus after a rash of robberies in the past few months.

My point is that people ought to be able to fend for themselves and that I am shocked that they're not. I know loads of people who don't even know how to fish for example. It is possible to be too comfortable, too reliant, too deferential.

I agree, some of these complaints seem like pretty esoteric stuff. But every gas station I've been to around here has been pre-pay for years. The woman's car had local (state and county) plates along with a frame for a local college so she was clearly from around here. Further, there's a sign right by the pump that says you have to pre-pay.

But, yeah, there's some complaints in here that are expecting too much. I mean, there's so much BS stuff on the Internet out there it's not surprising some wouldn't know what "Rick Rolling" is.

I don't want to fight with anyone, or be alienated from anyone and I certainly don't regard myself as superior to anyone. But I think it is true that most people do not know how to think properly, read properly or live properly. How do you account for so many depressed people in society? Or obese people or people with cancer or divorced people? Or adults who read Harry Potter? Why is it that 1 billion people go hungry in the world? Why is it that we think we can solve the worlds problems with charity singles? Why do people buy clothes that were manufactured in sweat shops? Why do people watch so much TV and play so many video games? Why do people not know how to hunt deer?

What is the fuck wrong with adults reading Harry Potter? I haven't read them but I have read most of the Wizard of Oz books as an adult.

And I don't hunt deer because i don't need them as a source of food and I think it is immoral to kill for sport. If I needed to kill something for food rabbits and kangaroos would do. Or better still I would fish.

How do you account for so many depressed people in society?

Chemical embalances in the brain brought on by genetic defects.

Or obese people or people...

Consumption of more energy than is being expended, also genetics.

with cancer...

Exposure to enviromental contaminants, genetics, and the fact people always died of cancer we just didn't know what it was until recently.

or divorced people?

Shit happens.

Or adults who read Harry Potter?

People enjoy different kinds of fiction.

Why is it that 1 billion people go hungry in the world?

Not all nations have developed, care to develop, or have he means to develop an economic system capable of sustaining a population.

Why is it that we think we can solve the worlds problems with charity singles?

We don't think that. We do think we can ease the burden.

Why do people buy clothes that were manufactured in sweat shops?

Most people simply don't know and don't care. Also, the problems with "sweat shops" are bit over-rated.

Why do people watch so much TV and play so many video games?

Because entertainment makes life worth living. Things have simply changed. 300 years ago, the same may have been said about going to plays and reading books.

Why do people not know how to hunt deer?

Because the grocery store is, like, right there. So there's no need to go hunt. Also? Deer tastes like ass.

Congratulations, Mr. Troi, I think that was the first time I've seen Miss Chicken swear in a post, at least like that.

Yeah, I've read few of the HP books. One perks of being very intelligent and mature is being able to play and know when to be a kid, rather than be jaded. Life is too short not to read HP. Yes, it is generally geared toward kids. But it is a healthy way to pass the time.
