New "Blue Peter" Competition - Design A TARDIS Console

I saw this earlier in the week. Matt Smith surprised the winner by appearing on a big screen when she was out and about with her mother. Once again, for me the omens are good.

That's awful. Almost as bad as what we've had for the past 5 years. I mean, skipping rope to guide the Tardis? Self-playing piano? Pens with invisible ink? What's the point in that? I almost prefer that bloody stupid pumpy thing.

I'd say it reflects badly on children these days, but I suppose all the really bright ones are watching Magpie on the other side.

If it was me, I'd have copied the excellent version from the TV Movie. It's not as if anyone would have noticed.

To lift a quote written by Steven Moffat.

"Your DNA must cry itself to sleep at night."

The point of the contest was to design a console made of common household materials. Of course it has a skipping rope in it.

And I normally abhor this, but here's my crazy uninformed theory:
Supposedly, the series arc is going to involve the Doctor finding bits of the TARDIS (or TARDIS console maybe?) scattered through time an space, the result of some big future disaster. If that DOES happen, obviously the Doctor would need to build himself a new console so he can get the TARDIS working again! But I'm sure it would be a temporary fix.

Looks like fun. BP's done tons of Who related things over the years hasn't it?

Okay, now you're just messing with us...

Lovely design. I think Susannah has a great grasp of the series. Just look at "a galaxy sat nav that sometimes gets things wrong" and "rusty old radio to pick up sound waves from aliens." Yup, sounds like The Doctor's TARDIS to me.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about that particular spoiler/rumor/thoery. I hope it's true and I can see Susannah's design fitting in with this.

I mean, there's nothing remotely cheesy about a big counter that says Humanian Era, perhaps the Doctor could own a lot of clocks as well to reiniforce the idea that he is a time traveller.

Funnily enough I caught the end of the TV movie the other night and I have to say that while I do like the whole gothic look to the TARDIS, the console is a little, well frankly a little cheesy--it screams HG Wells just a little too unsubtlely.

The new series console room has its flaws, but it does at least look like it was built by aliens.

The TV Movie console was steampunk. The RTD era one looks like it was made by Fisher Price.

No, it looks like the Doctor had to do a lot of repair work with limited materials because there were no more TARDISes or Time Lords from whom he could get new parts.

don't be silly, if it were Fisher price it would be all plasticy and multicoloured. It looks more like Steptoe and Son built it...oh wow actually I wonder if the Doctor got the parts from Trotter's lane??

If his limited materials all came off a Fisher Price.

That's the thing, it does look plasticy. Like that spinning thing on it for example. Between that, the pumpy thing, and a whack-a-mole mallet, it looks less like a time machine and more like a disappointing birthday present for a 6 year old.

I admit the new console and the coral things bugged me at first. But I got used to it.
Same here, but I think that was mostly due to such a radical change in design (The Eighth Doctor's TARDIS aside). But I got use to it overtime and now I like it. I have to agree with Sci that the design looks like it was built with spare parts (which, amusingly, is why I love the earliest Cybermen so much).

Actually, that's one of my problems with the idea of a completely new TARDIS interior. If the TARDIS is still capable of just "changing the desktop theme" and creating an entirely new interior and interface... then why did the Doctor need to use spare parts to repair it? Why not just change the desktop theme and magically conjure up a completely repaired console every time something broke?

Well the TARDIS is alive, and maybe it chooses to change/or has to due to exstensive damage. We only have one line from a charity special to indicate that the Doctor has control, and when the 4th Doctor wanted a change he had to use the secondary console room, he didn't change the main one.

Lol. As opposed to the original console, which looked like it was made out of a few sheets of plywood.

And let's not even talk about the white dinner plates glued to the wall... ;)

Agreed. I really like steampunk, but looking back at that room now, it just feels way too contrived, and not enough like Doctor Who to me.

It looks more like something that was cobbled together by an eccentric scientist on Earth.
