Okay, so some of us don't like Abrams' reboot. And that discussion is going on well enough elsewhere in other threads.

That said is there anything that could be done (and for now set aside starting from scratch) that you'd like to see next? Most particularly, for the critics, what would need to be done to get your interest?

For myself now that the origin story is out of the way, they could get some of my interest back if they got back to some of the stuff that many of us would like to see. I want to see an honest-to-god strange-new-world, final frontier, going-where-no-man-has-gone-before story. I want something emulating some of TOS' best. Gimme something along the lines of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," "The Corbomite Maneuver," "The Doomsday Machine," "A Taste Of Amageddon" and too many others too list. Give us some of the substance and cool story ideas.

I want it all, man. I want that old time TOS religion. A damn cool story told in a dynamic and engaging way.

I'm unsure they can do it, but I'd like to see it. Give me that and I just might actually pay to see it in the theatre.

Note that the nuTrek guys should try injecting some freshness and avoid just lathering in familiar references. No TWoK or "Space Seed" retelling, please. Do something original.

Me too. In my ignorance and inability to recognize what is truly good and what is complete garbage however I foolishly believe they've managed to do that post 1979... ya know, once or twice. Isn't saying the only right way to do something was the way they did it in the 60's kind of like complaining about how politicians aren't honest any more and that prices used to be reasonable? What's next? "Get off my lawn?"

I'll say this though; the smartest thing Enterprise ever did was emulate the dynamic/focus on three central characters with the rest of the crew as supporting cast the way it was done on The Original Series. Everything since then suffered somewhat from their attempt (and failure) to focus 6 characters to varying degrees with the Captain as the lead. If they ever make another series I really hope they borrow at the very least that aspect of TOS.

Many, many times, in fact.

If they hadn't, almost no one would remember TOS now. It would be the kind of fossilized cult object that holds onto a small number of dedicated, aging fans. Like people who adore The Honeymooners. The only reason mass numbers of people know or care about Trek in any context other than nostalgia is that it's remained alive and vital to some extent or another.

Anyone who's holding their breath waiting for the world to "rediscover" that the old stuff was so awesome that they should be copying it more closely than they are...will suffocate.

There are a handful of TNG and DS9 episodes where I think they got it right, so it is doable. I've also seen something of a TOS sensibility in other series and films, so it's not impossible.

I look at something like Master And Commander as inspiration. For me that was the best Trek movie never made. So give us some high drama and high adventure and show us some stuff never seen before. I want to sit up in my seat and say, "What the fuck is that? That's freaking Cool!"

I need to see Kirk, Spock, the rest of the Enterprise crew and the Federation taken seriously as a dedicated organization based on principles, on laws, on ambition and on vision. I'm not talking about genuflecting to old TOS trivia like "General Order One" being the Prime Directive, even though non-interference should be part of the rules that guide the characters. I'm talking about recalling the kind of conviction (and self-doubt) that we saw Kirk wrestle with in "Court Martial" where he questioned his memory and decided he believed in it, and in his training and experience.

People who were quick to embrace the "reboot" movie missed an important point. The continuity the new movie derailed did have an important use: it built a backbone (admittedly flawed) of history and rules in the otherworld of STAR TREK that showed us what the characters stood for and why. Could newer movies rebuild that in-Universe structure of rules and reasons to show us how the "nuTrek" could stand for those same things?

I don't know and I'm not holding my breath.

But I do hope it happens. It's a very slim chance that it could happen...

And yes, it's time to see something imaginative. Some strange, new worlds. It will be hard to top the interesting aliens we've seen in the "old" TREK. (The Dominion Founders, Jem Hadar, Cardassians, to name a few) I hope we don't see any more Klingons or Romulans. That would be a mistake in my opinion. I fail to see why Hollywood would reboot the franchise only to go back and show more human actors with warmed-over makeup jobs. They've gone back to that well too many times already. We need to see something new.

Agreed. As much as I like ST:2009, I'm pretty good on time travel, mirror universes, alternate realities and so on. I want to see something untried in the movies. I want to see a real adventure into the unknown, and make it unique and awe inspiring. Now, I'm more positive in that I believe these guys can do it. J.J.'s got the knack for fun and adventure, it's whether he can reign it in and bring us to some real "undiscovered country", as it were.

Definitely something untried! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Abrams' Trek a lot. However, I think I'd sink to the depths of despair if Khan appeared in the next one. Nothing could save the franchise for me after that.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing a feature-length movie with the Phase II crew. I have a soft spot for James Cawley's Kirk.

I would like to see a film about more of where we came from Trek-Wise than the where we are going, which could be anywhere with temporal stories. If we are going to use time there must be some unanswered questions of what happened some of the planets that Kirk and the crew left behind, perhaps a good old earth under invasion threat from a planet that developed after their visit some 100 or so years prior. I think writers are starting to run out of imagination, that old scifi magic has gone. The old stories were a little corny but we all loved them, about time films got back to that.

There was once a slogan here in the UK to do with politics and should be used with Star Trek - "Back to Basics."

I feel like the mirror universe has become a niche fetish in Trekdom. Yes, the first few forays into that universe were interesting and, dare I say it, fun. Then they became more and more cartooned as time wore on.

My favorite story set in that milieu is actually the Mike W. Barr, Tom Sutton, and Ricardo Villagran Mirror Universe Saga from DC's first Star Trek series.

But I've always had a major problem with the Mirror Universe. This: why is it to make our characters more interesting that we have to go to a "mirror" universe? Why not tell interesting stories of our characters in the universe they currently occupy?

It's kinda like the holodeck story. Do we really need to go to some holographic world to tell interesting stories when the very concept of the show is based on telling interesting stories on alien worlds?

For the next movie, I really want to see the ship and crew alone on the far-flung regions of unexplored space, and dealing with a situation without the backup of Starfleet. Something that's a spectacle. Something that's alien. Something that test the mettle of Kirk and Spock. No more Earth in peril in the final act. Just a crew, exploring a strange, new world without anyone to depend on but themselves.

Yep. This is it from now on.

Any future stories that are told on TV or in the movies will begin with the premise that the old rules don't apply - from this time forward the so-called "Trek Universe" is now malleable in every respect based upon the preferences and judgment of the current producers.

The studio will certainly insist that future productions incorporate characteristics that the people in charge consider necessary to maintain a broad audience for the resurrected Franchise - one only has to look at what succeeds theatrically and what doesn't to know that a high action quotient and youth are two such characteristics.

Hell, Paramount and their partners at UPN understood and insisted upon those things when they launched Star Trek: Enterprise. For some odd reason, hardcore fans thought that the disappointment of that series would result in a retrenchment or return to a style and type of content which was passe, when in fact it only cleared the decks for a more radical recreation of Star Trek which has succeeded in every important respect.

If and when the "Abramsverse" ceases to be the answer, the next producers will change Trek even further in order to keep it current.

Right now one would expect that Paramount is looking very hard at the success of Avatar - especially at its huge international numbers. You safely can bet big money that Star Trek 2 will be released in digital 3D.
