I saw the film last night with friends. The general consensus is that the acting was great and the cinematography was up to par, but the story was too predictable. We had it figured out after twenty minutes, and ultimately that does make things a little disappointing.
Funny. The one review I heard said that people will be upset that the solution came from too far out of left field...that they'd feel like it was a cheat.
I haven't seen the movie so I can't even begin to comment on this, but it's funny that I've now heard the end of the film criticized from both complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
I'm actually interested in seeing this, although my fondness for Scorsese films has significantly reduced over the years. Still, I see so many movies that I appreciate anyone trying to do something a little differently.

I can't decide what to do with this film. I love Scorcese and every film he's made. Definitely one of the best directors in the world. However, I absolutely hate this book. I had heard so much build up about the novel and that it had a huge twist, but I found the "twist" to be obvious after about the first 30 pages or so. In fact, I thought it was SO obvious that the only reason I could keep reading was because I thought maybe Lehane was trying to trick me. He wasn't. I will agree that with the story he was trying to tell, there really was no other way that things COULD end, but it just didn't sit well with me. It felt like Lehane kept trying to be clever, but I was already ahead of him.
I'm sure I'll see the film eventually as I love Scorcese and the cast, but it's not at the top of my list right now.

I saw it today. Loved it for its intensity, the acting, the cinematography. The shots of the island were so muted but so gorgeous and evocative. Leonardo DiCaprio was joked about after Titanic, but he is one HELL of an actor. When Teddy is finally forced to recall what happened, DiCaprio's emotions were bare and raw.

I will say I was disappointed. I feel I will probably be in the minority, but there was just so much that could have been...and wasn't.

I think we were just supposed to witness the intensity of his life and experience. That was solely the point. Not some M.Night style "twist." That wasn't the point at all. Not the way I see it. I really, really loved the intensity and mood of this film.
Ok.. Saw it this weekend and while the cinematography WAS impressive, my overall impression is mixed..

The continuity errors during the first quarter of the film distracted me considerably. They were WAY to obvious to ignore for me. And for me to say this is a big thing. I almost NEVER pick up on errors during a first viewing.
The story was compelling and while I knew there would be a twist at the end, I didn't know it would be like this, so for that, I was impressed.
Without spoiling the end, I have to say the images and the "prestige" of the climax really disturbed me. To tell you why would be to give it away.. But I left extremely depressed.
Good movie overall, because it moved me.

The distortions and twists are from the original work, and I am fine with that. Begrudgingly.

However the errors were distracting. I agree with marillion about the shaky discontinuity.
In one particular emotional scene there was a flub that absolutely ruined the close up. I was surprised they didn't clean it up...I wasn't the only one who noticed so I wasn't imagining things.

It was like watching a Dixon Hill/Dick Tracy spoof of an M. Night film. Even the music score is way over the top, so much so the film feels like a B-Movie.
Save your money on this one folks, trust me.

I don't know about the plot twist being completely obvious. Yes, we had a feeling what part of it would be but once we got to see the extent of it and its connections with (MILD SPOILERS) the apartment fire, the aronist's name, the mental patient who murdered her three kids, and a few other things, I wouldn't say we saw all of that coming.
I thought the movie was great in both cinematography and acting, especially Leonardo DiCaprio's. I felt sorry for his character by the end of the movie and his final line will have me always wondering if he knew what he was doing in that moment.

The "If you don't forget her, you won't find out the truth." wasn't a blatant enough hint?
Mmm, I got about part of the way through and lost interest.
Absolutely. All around the film was really acted, even from Ruffalo, who I wasn't expecting much from.
Loved the noir shots and the old school cinematography that Scorcese was channeling here.
