Why was there a Hath in the bar?

Those guys weren't from contemporary times like the Graske, Judoon, Slitheen or Adipose.

Felt pretty much the same as Mr Light, found it a disappointing final episode for the Tenth Doctor. It seemed too much like the last season final but with Time Lords instead of Daleks. The threat of the episodes seemed too vague and felt very rushed.

In the final scene with the Master why didn't any of the other Time Lords do anything? There were two guards behind the President but no one tries to stop the Master. Plus the Doctor spinning around to change who he was pointing the gun at happened to much. The President should have just killed the Doctor as soon as he turned away instead of letting the Doctor mess up their plan. The entire Time Lord thing seemed a bit pointless in the end.

It was nice to see some of the old companions again.

Man, I really don't want to see the Time Lords return. They're snooty, pompous and languid and I can't see how they'd add anything to any version of nuWho. They worked well in the format of the old, arc-lite serials. But the new series tend to be more episodic and feature huge set-piece spectacles that I don't think melds too well with the Time Lords. Time Lord society is complex, full of ceremony and pageantry, with customs and rituals, titles and affiliations and a lot of self-delusion. It's a temporal, alien version of the medieval Roman Catholic Church.

There's no way to fit all that in with the brief, Wagnerian extravaganzas the new shows specialize in. Unless you made them into a central, kinda always there faction (ala UNIT). And who wants that? Other races and groups that are similar in disposition can and do work precisely because they don't have that kind of intimate connection with the Doctor. They may be haughty and arrogant, but they're not Time Lords. Not his people. So when they go away and are scarcely ever heard of again, it's no big deal.

The complete isolation of the recent Doctors has been an essential element of the character. It's what makes the scene of him holding the Master in his arms in LoTTL so gripping (the only thing that saves that whole Doctor Jesus scene for me), as one example. Bringing back the TL in any significant way massively undercuts this.

Are they going to start sending him on missions again? Another trial? No way. The Time Lord civilization is dead. As dead as dead can be and it should stay that way. I'd tolerate a few one-offs (the Master, Jenny, Romana), but that's it.

My number one problem with the finale is you go through all the hassle to bring back the Time Lords and they don't do anything! They walk out of a white wall, stand around for five minutes, and go back. If you're going to bring them back, have them around for the two parter, cause some havoc! Examine their characters! Was that really Rassilon? That would have been a fascinating story. Of course the Time War just sounds like the most amazing story ever told so it's a shame they'll never actually tell it. What the hell is the Nightmare Child? And the King of Almosts or whatever it was? I'm dying to know this stuff.

You do realize this is television? Who wants to sit there and learn why Rassilon is having a temper tantrum. Not on a Saturday evening. They want entertainment.

Steven Moffat doesn't want to touch the Time War either so you won't be seeing it while he's in charge.

What he finds most compelling about running the show
SM: I like the classic Doctor Who story, which is he walks out of the Tardis and he hasn’t a clue what’s going on and he says, “What’s that? I don’t know. What are those monsters doing?”
When asked when Doctor Who was going to go more into the history of the Time War, Mr. Moffat explained that he will never do a story on the Time War while he was in charge of Doctor Who.
He explained that he feels that nothing could live up to the mythology or people’s imagination of what the Time War was. He compared it to how exciting the Clone Wars sounded in Star Wars when Obi-Wan Kenobi talked about them, that they sounds so fabulous and mysterious and that his imagination was fired up as a child, but when it finally was portrayed in the later films, then “ it showed up and it was just a bunch of meetings!”

I kind of uinderstand his reasoning and I think RTD thought the same.

Of course, that's part of the reason they'll never do it. It's probably impossible to justice to it on television, and extremely difficult on film. A talented novelist could probably have a decent shot at, though if it were my choice, I'd have stories of the Time War just skirt the edges of it, always suggesting but never showing the big picture. Honestly, "mean-wiles" and "never-weres" work much better as written puns than said out loud (I didn't fully appreciate them until I saw them written down), anyway, which is another point for text. In any event, things like the Could've-Been King sounds awesome, and can even be described awesomely, but wait until you have to actually do something with him.

It's like how the Doctor single-handedly sealing the rift at the Medusa Cascade sounded so lofty... and then the Medusa Cascade turned out to be a glowy space thing. Swell. We saw a billion of 'em on Voyager.

Interesting interview. I'm concerned that he wants to emphasize stand-alones and not have a running arc building through the season, though. I love the mystery of building up a major villain for the finale.

I confess it was nice having the timelords around as an unseen presence.

I liked having the Doctor occassionally being sidetracked or sent on little missions as the price for his freedom.

As for Rassilon, he did win the war against the giant vampires way back when, so obviously instead of executing him when he was deposed of power, they imprisoned him in his tower partly as punishment, but also as a sort of Gallifreyan 'King Arther' in case he was ever needed again.
I suspect they thought they could simply use his technical skills to defeat the daleks, or just use him as a figurehead to rally the troops. Perhaps lock him away again once the war was won. Unfortunately they didn't take his ambitions into account and he easily took control again once he was revived.

IMO it's deeply flawed, but then I think pretty much all the season enders are in some way.

I disliked them treating the TimeLords as if they were disposable monsters-of-the-week.

Wonderful acting from Tennant & Cribbins though.

I can see the Time Lords coming back finally, but I doubt the Time War will ever be fully revealed, just name droppings (but I like the idea of the Nightmare Child).

Which idea's that? I've never heard it defined. Personally, I've got a great idea for what it could be. One so good, I may work it into my own script.

Well we know it must be big because Davros' command ship went into its jaws. I picture a moon sized creature with a nightmarish demonic appearance with glowing eyes and lots of teeth with black skin and red burning lava leaking through cracks. Basically a moon sized Balrog :p

I feel like I've just walked into another conversation half-way through or something.. What am I missing here?

He's describing what he imagines the Nightmare Child -- into whose jaws Davros's ship flew during the first year of the Time War -- to have looked like.

Is that mentioned onscreen or is it from somewhere else?
