Ghost in the Shell, coming soon to the millitary...

Meredith

Vice Admiral
Admiral
The soldiers of the future might controversially boost their brains with drugs and prosthetics, augment their strength with mechanical exoskeletons, and have artificially intelligent "digital buddies" at their beck and call, according to the U.S. Army's Future Soldier Initiative.
The project is the latest attempt from the U.S. Army research lab in Natick, Mass., to brainstorm what soldiers might carry into the battlefield of tomorrow. A special emphasis of its concept is augmenting mental performance.

Kind of scary when you think about it...

Sounds pretty cool if you ask me. They've already made some pretty impressive strides with things like blue force tracker and the Stryker, but it's still no where close to the army's current vision

They're paying people to brainstorm this stuff? Why not just pick up a John Ringo book instead?

Does any of this require any implants? This is a serious concern because soldiers cannot say no...

Ahhh, the military is an interesting institution where people lose the very same rights they are defending. US military is rife with examples where soldiers have been used in scientific experiments without their consent -- both knowing and unknowing.

Agreed.

I am not scared of technology, just scared at humanities capacity for evil...and technology works well with that.

I remember just prior to being sent to afganistan in the year 2003, special forces troop with 20/20 eyesight were give lasic surgery to give them 20/10 and 20/05 vision.

Sure they can. They can choose not to volunteer in the first place. One of the subtexts of Ghost in the Shell is that cyberization is TECHNICALLY voluntary, but being all-natural is such a liability that nobody in the "pro" leagues can afford not to.

So you can opt out of the implants for the same reason you'd want to opt out of, say, commitment to the Navy Seals or Marine Recon or something, with all the training and indoctrination that comes with it. Once you're in, you can never really get out again; it changes you for life, sometimes not for the better. Cybernetic enhancement would be just another interesting form of that soldier specialization that never really wears off.

T'Girl,

Without the right to say no, and this being forced upon them, I don't think this is right. If they asked for the improved vision, that would be different

Newtype Alpha,

There were some people who joined the military prior to 9/11 and end up stop-lossed and such. As a result when they signed up this was not a possibility and now is...

Irrelevant, since you still have to volunteer for a branch of the service where these implants are mandatory. They would be far too expensive to distribute to every grunt with a rifle, and too troublesome to boot, since those grunts aren't trained to use those new implants.

In point of fact, the Army has enough trouble just distributing armor and ammunition to its backdoor draftees, so I doubt they'd be stupid enough to attempt a policy of "welcome to basic training. Your enhancement surgery is scheduled for noon tomorrow."

Fat lot you know about how the military works. The US military does what it sees fit with a warm body.

Newtype Alpha,

Still I have a problem for people who cannot say no being forced to undergo these modifications, even if they were volunteers as most people would never expect that this would end up becoming mandatory for soldiers. If they did, I'm certain many would not have signed up.

The U.S. Military does whatever it finds convenient. Spending 400 grand on every half-assed grunt that gets tricked into service is pretty damned inconvenient (they couldn't even be bothered to spend a tenth of that making sure everybody had body armor).

The good stuff will probably be reserved for members of elite units, the Walmart parts will go to soldiers wounded in action that the Army doesn't want to discharge.

I would.

Wow -- I had no idea that the all-volunteer US military, which is having an all-time high in retention, has to trick people into enlisting. The overall education of today's soldier is higher than ever in history. I cannot believe that such a massive intellect as yours, who has zero military experience, is so well versed and all knowing in how the workings of the DoD.

Seriously, stop watching so much Sci-Fi and reading fiction.

You clearly haven't been paying attention.

The overall education of today's soldier is higher than ever in history.
That's because the overall education of today's CITIZEN is higher than ever in history. A significant if not majority portion of new recruits do enlist primarily as a means to escape from poverty or as an alternative to what they (perhaps rightly) perceive as a rat race job market with few prospects on the horizon.

A few join for ideological reasons, a smaller number with the intent of becoming lifers. Critical to this discussion is the fact that the ones who will eventually become career military are the ones most likely to volunteer for some sort of elite unit where cybernetic enhancement is part of the deal (I know a certain Hornet pilot on the USS Truman who expressed exactly this thought a few months ago).

I cannot believe that such a massive intellect as yours, who has zero military experience, is so well versed and all knowing in how the workings of the DoD.
I suppose you think I would have to be the CEO of McDonalds to know for sure whether or not they sell cheeseburgers. :vulcan:

"You live in a spaceship, dear."

You do know that this is a thread about the cybernetic enhancement of soldiers for military purposes, right?

John Picard

It is routine practice for recruiters to employ all sorts of forms of deceit, including exaggerations, half-truths, whole lies, and complete dishonesty in order to get people to sign up. They are completely unaccountable for their deception as once you sign up you're basically US Government Property.
