Things you worry needlessly about

Miss Chicken

Little three legged cat with attitude
Admiral
I live in government housing and today I had my yearly housing inspection. I have been fretting over it since I got the letter about it a week ago.

A friend came to visit a couple of days ago. I said she would have to talk to me why I worked as I had an inspection coming up. I was in my room cleaning out my wardrobe. She asked why I was cleaning out my wardrobe when the inspector was not allowed to look in my wardrobes. I admitted to my friend I had no idea why I felt I had to clean out my wardrobe.

I am not usually so anal retentive. My house is clean but I am not fanatical about it. But when the inspection is coming up I just worry about it so much that I have to do unneccessary things to cope with the stress.

Are you like this with anything (i.e exams, job applications or interviews, the in-laws visiting etc)

I worry about everything.

This is me:

He's Mr Worry of the Mr Men for those not familiar with these fabulous stories!

^That's me too. I worry about everything all the time. It's horrible. I can't sleep at night because I spend hours laying in bed with racing thoughts, worrying about money, my health, my family's health, work, my future...

I don't worry about much of anything, which is strange because I'm under treatment for lifelong anxiety disorder. My doctor says this happens with lots of smart people - probably due to some of the same genes that amp up the brain. In my case the anxiety is just shut off until I go to sleep, when I have really strange and vivid dreams. This shut off does make for some odd habits, though. I haven't checked my mail in 20 years. The post office thinks I'm dead.

Okay, you folks need to get on an SSRI, like citalopram, Paxil, or Zoloft. You might also do well with dopamine reuptake inhibitor like Bupropion (aka Zyban the anti-smoking drug). Further, occasional dosages of an anti-anxiety drug like Xanax will help shut your brain off so you can go to sleep, if the SSRI doesn't do it, though I'm not sure this is a recommended practice.

I worry more about trivial things like if there's any coffee left or if I have money to buy cigarettes, or if my DVD's or comic book collection are in order, instead of worrying about deadlines I have to overcome or the whole being unemployed thing.

Antidepressants work for some, not for others. Some people have other ways to deal with their worries and it's not a good idea to recommend drugs over the web. I certainly am not a candidate for antidepressants -- they don't always go well with bipolar disorder.

Um, those aren't trivial things. Coffee and cigarettes are more important than food, clothing, and shelter.

I'm not writing prescriptions, and no doctor is going to willy-nilly prescribe such things because a patient asks for it. They'll do a full evaluation.

The important point is that to take this step a person has to describe their symptoms to a medical professional, which a great many people won't do for many, many years, chosing instead to sit in their basement (as Shatner said) and let life go on outside.

Well, of course. It just seemed that you were averring that medication is the only option. It's a good option for some, not for others.

Truly.

From the described symptoms, though, it sounds like this thread describes an anxiety problem, not a psychological fixation, mood swings, or a host of other potential issues. Given that Trek fans have a reputation for being very bright, a little introverted, and a little socially awkward, a higher than normal incidence of generalized anxiety problems would not be unexpected here. Often those have a simple chemical basis that is easily remedied.

As for the general leftward political slant of TrekBBS'rs, that takes years of education and therapy.

As a college student, I worry about money a lot. I also worry about gaining weight, which is dumb because I'm actually in shape.

No thanks.

Oh, looks like someone just got their new Merck Manual.

Wolverines. Even their name is frightening... it conjures images of battalions full of genetically engineered Wolf/Marine hybrids.
