No Specials Soundtrack News

I find it quite disappointing as a music fan that there doesn't seem to be any kind of news about a release date for a Doctor Who Specials Soundtrack. We know from Gold himself that he recorded music, we've discussed this in other soundtrack threads, now that the Box Set has come out in both Region 1 and 2 I find it rather confounding that the BBC hasn't made any kind of announcement yet. Were the previous scores not selling well or something? Or are they going to just wait until next year after Series Five airs and do a double disc or combine them like they did with the first soundtrack release?

It's possible that this is a 'Branding decision': the new merchandise will be coming out with the new logo and a bit of a fanfare come April, so do they want to put out a 10th Doctor product?
Our answer is, obviously, yes, 'cos we'll buy it, but Brand Managers don't always think like that (eg: the decision to pull the Hand of Fear VHS three weeks after it was released back in 1996 as they didn't want it to steal sales from the release of the TV movie).

A lot depends on how well the last soundtracks sold, too. If they didn't sell many copies there might not be any incentive for Silva Screen to pony up.

Also, since Gold has been retained to do the music for Series 5, it's possible they're going to wait and do a Specials/Series 5 collection later on. There's precedent for this - remember the first soundtrack CD included music from both Eccleston and Tennant episodes.

Release dates for soundtracks have no relation to broadcast or DVDs - Torchwood Children Of Earth's soundtrack could be heard before transmission. And one the track names was even a spoiler.

Not really anything to do with the BBC either. Sure they'll mention it on the website (as the would any other peice of merchandise) but it's up to Silvascreen to prepare a press release etc. It might just be Murray is too busy. He does have a TV show to work on.

I wonder which bright spark ok'ed this years Easter Eggs.

Didn't even have any last year, and even then the character was hardly the latest villain!

Ahh, but Easter Eggs are on the shelves in the run up to Easter and taken off as soon as it's over. So if the new series starts at Easter again then these'll be the last ever bits of old logo merchandise before the new stuff comes out! (in theory, at least,m and at a guess. Very much a guess).

I have a hard time beileving that Gold would stuff 5 One hour specials and a 13 epsodes of season 5 in one, It would have to be a double CD set, otherwise tons of music will have to be cut and that would be very unfare to fans. Also i'm sure that TPTB woudl want to keep the 10th/rtd and 11th/moffat stuff seperate.

You guys must not read my full post because I pointed out both of these possibilities in my post as well...maybe not the "rebranding" part but including both the specials and series five material together. I am inclined to think that they will do a double disc set later in the winter time for release in the UK and Feb in North American like they've done in the past.

I hope we got a release with just the specials music, but in the end, it doesn't really matter as long as it's released in some form.

In that case, though, both Doctors were attached to the same logo. How would it work if there was a CD with Tennant & Smith? Could they fit both logos on somehow?

I could see them overlapping both logos on the cover like having Eccelston's and Tennant's Logo on the top and then Matt Smith's on the bottom. A Picture of both the Doctor's in the middle over the Tardis and maybe Wilf beside the Tenth Doctor on his left or something like that. This is how I would do it.

Logos are irrelevant. Remember the BBC has already rolled the first 8 Doctors under one single logo. And a few months ago there was a report on a fan site (citing a statement made by I believe one of the people in charge of the DVD releases) that the BBC is planning to standardize all branding under the new logo, even stuff related to the classic series (ie future DVD releases). And there's no guarantee IDW Comics won't change to the new logo even though they're planning to run Tenth Doctor stories till the end of the year. There's nothing saying Silva Screen would have to run two logos for Tennant and Smith on a CD release.

Then the specials soundtrack if it were combined with a Series Five soundtrack (in a two disc set) would naturally have the current Smith/Moffat era logo on it's cover which I don't mind. I don't care about the case artwork anyways I just want the bloody soundtrack.

I was reading Murray Gold's twitter accounts and found it interesting that in Jan that he tweeted that we should have something out by February but his last tweet at the end of next month stated that the project had hit a snag that needed to be worked out. I wonder what the snag was and if has been worked out? I'm assuming that since we've had no updates on the matter that it wasn't. It also seemed that he was adamant that we would have something out by March prior to the snag tweet.

Nio, there woudln't be two logos, but there could be overlap imagery. In the UK, you can currently get a 'limited edition' sonic screwdriver that shows David Tennant and Matt Smith on its packaging.

On the logos: the CD covers have been reversible for a couple of years (choice between current BBC style and BBC style when the CD range started); the more recent DVDs also have reversible covers.

That must just be in the UK. None of the Gold soundtrack CDs I have include a reversible cover. Mind you I ordered them all from the UK, so you'd think they'd have that. Or were you just referring to the DVD releases. Here in North America we've had the Pertwee/McGann logo for the classic series releases all the way along, and it'll be interesting to see if they change to the Smith logo.

That's a damn cool cover that guy has. Simplistic but effective IMO. I'd buy that.

How is it simplistic? It's busy as hell, what with the Earth, TARDIS, Dalek ships and what ever it is in the background, it's horrible and over bearing.
