I am a little mystified

This story has just appeared as Breaking News on my local newspaper website.

A HOBART woman has been found dead in the boot of her car at a New Norfolk hotel car park.
Tasmania Police is investigating whether another person was involved, although they say it is unlikely the death was a result of foul play.
The woman was last seen at the Star and Garter Hotel bottle shop at New Norfolk about 1.50pm on Saturday.
The woman's body was found inside the boot of her late model white Nissan Pulsar in the hotel's car park about 4.45pm yesterday.
Police say the body had been in the boot for quite some time. Eastern CIB acting detective inspector Mark Burke said police were investigating whether the woman, from the New Norfolk area, had left the hotel car park after being seen in the bottle shop.
Rest of story here

Has anyone got any suggestions how anyone can end up dead in the boot (trunk) of a car without there being any foul play?

Couldn't reach the tire iron and fell in?

What he said.

Most older model cars do not have emergency handles inside the trunk (boot), and with age, the hinges on the lid can become loose and fall closed with little prompting.

Glow-in-the dark trunk release handles are standard now on new cars sold in the US because of incidents like this.

It's possible that she was a smaller frame woman who reached or climbed into the trunk to retrieve an item, and the lid fell closed while she was in there.

Ugh what a terrible way to die. :alienblush:

I didn't realize trunks were that big! Or maybe I'm just tall. I can't think of a reason why I'd ever need to fully climb into the trunk to get anything.

Either way, this seems like a good reason to always have a cellphone on you!

Would the metalwork of the car act as a Faraday cage and screen out the signal? Easy to try out -- all I need are two mobile phones, a car, and a test subject.

I don't think it does.

I vaguely remember an incident a while back when a young lady was abducted and put in the boot of a car and was able to telephone for help.

This, combined with this:

Still, I had no idea that car trunks were so air-tight you could suffocate in them.

Kids suffocate and die in them all the time. I believe that was why the release was finally put into them. Just awful!

I've seen on tv shows that if you are ever abducted and thrown into one you should break the tail lights with your foot. I don't know how true that is though.

The dead woman was a 56 year old married woman. Her body was discovered by a relative.

There are no obvious signs of foul play or assault. Police have ruled out suicide and are now treating the death as suspicious.

There is a good possibility that the woman died of heat exhaustion.

You can still suffocate or starve to death...

Anyway, I've never heard the term "boot" before. Interesting.

Americans used the word "boot" early on; I've heard great-grandparents use it here.
