CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

According to TrekToday, Chris Pine is the frontrunner and on the short list to play Captain America.

Well I could get on board with that. I'm still rooting for Ryan McPartlin, but Pine is five years younger and Cap really should look like he's within shouting distance of 25 or so, if this is going to be an origin story...

The important thing is that Pine is a very skilled actor who can pull off the kind of complex role that Cap should be, if they know what they're doing.

Hopefully that turns out to just be rumour. From what I've seen of Chris Pine, he's really a comedic actor. Captain America needs to be played by somebody who can project gravitas, who can make drama work within the action/superhero context. Already the character borders on self-parody, making it all the more important to get someone who can inhabit the role; a farcical treatment like NuTrek's Kirk would annihilate any suspension of disbelief.

I didn't find his Kirk to be comical (certainly not compared with the original!!), but even if he's a skilled comic, I don't mind. My observations of actors who can pull off comedy well is that they often can also pull off drama well (but the reverse is not as often true). Maybe because acting is all about controlling the audience's emotional reaction and laughter is one of the hardest reactions to elicit. McPartlin's comic skill on Chuck is one major reason why I'm rooting for him.

Pine would be a good choice, but if he signs up to play Captain America and Jack Ryan in addition to Kirk his shooting schedule is going to be pretty crazy if all three franchises lead to multiple sequels (especially since Captain America will be appearing in The Avengers, too).

Be kind of weird to have him working with his "dad". ;)

I suspect him and his agent are thinking of how much cash he can make.... I would be...

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

If the Chris Pine story is true, his reps will ask for millions because they think he's worth it after Star Trek. I personally doubt that he is (all of a sudden) a "name" player who guarantees bigger box office.

I think Marvel should just sign Ryan McPartlin. He would likely sign a three-picture deal for very little money by Hollywood standards.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

That's quite the assumption to make about Chris Pine. Besides which any actor who is cast as Captain America remember will not only be playing him in "Captain America: First Avenger" but also any potential sequels and also "The Avengers". I have no problem with them considering or picking Chris Pine. Now that I know who Ryan McPartlin is (from Chuck) he would be a great choice as well.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Is Chris Pine going to be Captain America, has this been confirmed yet his schedule will be very busy with Star Trek XII, Jack Ryan and maybe Captain America.

I didn't find his Kirk to be comical

No? Seemed to me that NuKirk's 'character arc' (and I use the term in the loosest possible sense) was essentially a series of strung-together slapstick, pratfalls and outright vaudeville, wrapped in a smarmy, breezy performance that was essentially an extended James Dean parody. Only occasionally was the character played straight. NuKirk was like NuScotty, making up for the extreme self-satire of the latter by the sheer quantity of farce around the former.

Shatner established Kirk having a certain charming over-the-top-ness, which I guess is what you interpret as comedy, which isn't surprising - there's a good reason why Shatner's Kirk has been parodied so incessantly. But without that element, we no longer have Kirk. It's like expecting Spock to not have that barely-hidden arch sarcasm or McCoy not to fly off the handle every so often.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

But that doesn't allow any new actors to put their own spin on the character themselves. That would be like if the actors playing all the Doctors post-Hartnell weren't allowed to do their own thing.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Pine certainly did his own thing while remaining true to the character. Isn't that what we wanted him to do?

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Yes, which means he doesn't have to ape Shatner's colossal hamminess. Being a ham isn't an intrinsic part of Kirk, merely being a guy who doesn't always play by the rules while struggling to stay within the spirit of the law.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Kirk senior is going to be Thor, while Nero has already been the Hulk. I think everyone in that movie should end up as a superhero

Zachary Quinto for Sub-Mariner (Namor always had Spock ears anyway)

Zoe Saldana for Storm

Anton Yelchin for Spider-Man

Simon Pegg for someone in his buddy Edgar Wright's version of Antman

What about Karl Urban? Any ideas.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Karl Urban as Hawkeye. Why not?

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

No problem!

And I can definitely see Zoe Saldana as Storm . . . .

I didn't find his Kirk to be comical (certainly not compared with the original!!)...

Nor did I - just a fairly relaxed and humorous personality.

Certainly far preferable to seeing Shatner take one more tedious and hammy run at the part.
