Names spelt strange ways

I was in a line picking up a lay-by for a friend. The young woman in front of me was putting something on layby and had to give her name. She gave her first name as Brittany and added that it was with 2 Ts and 2 Ys. I gather the sale assistant after being told that started to write in down as Bryttany but was told it was Brittanyy.

Who in their right mind spells this name that way? Once when you heard a name you had a fair idea how to spell it. There were a few like Sean/Shaun/Shawn that had multiple spellings but there weren't that many odd spellings.

Does this trend annoy you?

Oh for the love of pete, I fucking *hate* it when couples give these fancy-pants names to their kids. :brickwall: It drives me up the fucking wall. These people should get down off their cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and GET OVER IT.

I do find some of them odd, but I suppose everyone wants to be just a little bit different. And I can't complain because my name, "Rakhee", is traditionally spelt "Rakhi."

My sister usual has to spell her name for people or she gets; Lan. Lam, Lamya (she is dark) and sometimes Lambert.

Her first name is Lamb.

^What an idiot. I knew a Jessica in high school who changed the spelling of her name to "Jesska." Lame.

I'm a teaching in Brooklyn. Usually I enjoy interesting names, but I've come across names that verge on the cruel and inappropriate at times. I had an Alize a few years ago. Who the hell names their child after an alcoholic beverage?

The sad thing is, a lot of people probably do have lameass spellings like that - and not as a joke. :(

Another thing that's sad is that we don't have sentient traffic signs but that's another matter.

Reminds me of an old In Living Color sketch. Two camp counselors were rounding up the kids to get on the bus and go home. They read off the list of all the kids' names, each of which was the name of a medical condition or product, so the kids had names like Ibuprofen, Neutrogena, etc. :guffaw:

Fucking traffic sign, all it does is tell me how far away my exit it. I know, I drive this everyday!

Taking this approach to get around "that username is already taken" errors is bad enough. As an honest-to-goodness name it's even worse.

I worked with a guy who was called Mann and he wanted everyone to call him Mr. Mann.

That didn't happen.

Well, nothing wrong with that if it happened to be his name. Hell, it's better than being Sergeant Sargent -- or Major Major.

Many parents give their children names they think will be distinctive, so the kid won't have the same name as a dozen others in school. So we get Ashlee, Ashleigh, Brittany, Britney, Britnee, KateLynn (a bastardized spelling of Caitlin), Dakota, Cheyenne (names from the American West were popular a few years ago), and so on. The comedian David Brenner has three sons named Cole, Slade, and Wyatt. Apparently he has a thing for cowboy names.

Of course, celebrities are in a whole other league when it comes to giving their children odd names.

As for me, I'm Scot. With one T. Hey, it wasn't my idea.

I don't really dislike odd names so long as the child/person doesn't have to spend a lifetime spelling out their names.

For example, Dakota is occasionally used in Australia through it certainly doesn't make the list of the 100 most common names. So if it isn't that common why do some parents decide to spell it as Dakotah or worse Dykotah.

I know of one little boy called Arlington, which is rare, but at least his mother spelt it correctly.

These days, giving kids names like that will ENSURE that they have the same name as a dozen, perhaps a hundred, others.

That's why traditional names seem to be making a comeback. According to Social Security statistics, the most popular names for boys born in 2008 were Jacob, Michael, Joshua, Matthew, Christopher, Andrew and Daniel. The top girls' names were Emily, Madison, Emma, Hannah, Olivia, Abigail and Isabella. Elizabeth, Sarah, Grace and Sophia were also high on the list. Other than Madison (the first girl with that name I'd ever heard of was the mermaid played by Daryl Hannah in Splash), those are all very classic names.

What goes around, comes around. Or plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Whatever.

I have seen Sarah also spelled Sara??? And Elizabeth spelled Elisabeth...always wondered about that. I also hate it when people try to spell my name which is Matthew-Mathew and try and stick me with Mat instead of Matt.

I don't there is anything strange with spelling Sarah as Sara, Elizabeth as Elisabeth, or Matthew as Mathew. I think that they are acceptable variations of their names even if they are a little less common.

I had a manager who had an ' in the middle of his name, like Tra'von.

Miss Chicken, I don't think it is strange...it just bugs me when people do that with my name...it would be different if it was actually Mathew...then Mat would be ok I guess.
