I used to play guitar as a teenager. I was okay, but no great shakes. I played electric and nylon acoustic. I could play a lot of licks Zepplin, Hendrix, Crazy Train, a little Bach. I was really good at arpeggios and scales, but I always found chords really difficult to play. I couldn't automatically form the chords with my hands so I'd have to move my hand and form the chord finger by finger. I still have an old acoustic laying around here and I always get the urge to pick it up again. Best way to learn the scales is learn all of them and play each one in every key down the fretboard without stopping.

A pentatonic G scale! Sounds pretty good so far. Keep practising! 
I've always wanted to pick up guitar. I'd imagine as a violinist, it shouldn't be too difficult for me. However, being a singer primarily, I see chord structure a bit differently...mostly in solfege instead of in 'proper' terms, if that makes any sense. I can play a teensy bit of piano, but since I can't read Bass clef (which is odd, as being a tenor, half of the music I sing is written in it) , it's hard to do anything other than simple pieces.

^I'm enjoying it. And looking forward to having more practice time this week. I know how you feel about clefs. I started on the bass for cello and while I eventually started playing pieces that went into alto, and read a bit of treble when I flirted (unsuccessfully) with piano, I still get confused looking at anything other than bass.

It sounds to me like you're off to a good start, and "Wish You Were Here" is probably a good one to take a stab at learning early. Most of it's fairly simple and non-busy, but there are a few places where it might be a bit of a challenge getting to where you can keep it all in a steady tempo. Most importantly, have fun with it -- that's really the main thing.
I know what you mean about the solfege thinking, but I'm up on my bass clef as a trombonist
. But I started on piano way back when though and still noodle around on it all the time, so when I pick up a guitar I'm at a complete loss for some reason, other than a dozen or so basic chords. The idea that there's more than one middle C, for example, throws me for a loop big time. I'm not sure why, because it's the exact same principle as the partials on brass instruments, but there's just something about the guitar that turns me into a musical idiot. As for the violin...when I was student teaching, I caught up enough to school the 3rd and 4th graders...but those 5th graders were light years ahead of me. p.s. Epic Beatles reference, made me smile. It's been a long, long, long time...

Oh yeah! I still do! Playing soothes me and gives me a lot of pleasure. I see (or hear!) that you're playing the solo intro to Wish You Were Here. Be careful, Gilmour is a bender and nylon strings are a bitch to bend!
^It sure is a bitch! But it's make my dad proud. He took me to a Pink Floyd concert when I was 8 or 9 -- They played Wish You Were Here as the encore -- with the sun setting behind the Columbia River Gorge, it was beautiful.
