What are you going to do with your Tax Returns?

Chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate.

More likely, it'll just get funneled into paying for my education!

^ Can't you adjust your W-4 allowances or something? There should be some way you can have more withheld.

Oh, there is but I'm married and had to move my parents in with me to be a caregiver to them, I could adjust to single and have the highest amount possible to have taken out but that would not leave much to live on.

Rough figures: Looks like we owe about $80 this year. So I need to rework some numbers and see if we can hit the break even point this year for next year: nothing back, nothing owed.

We only got about $1300 this year, instead of the usual 2000+. We fit into the "middle class" tax break category, so we had less taken out of our checks, and still got some back, as well. *shrug* It all comes out even in the end.

We just stuck it in our checking account (we used Turbo Tax). Haven't done anything yet. We're still hoping to adopt this year or at least get started with it this year, so we're leery of spending much right now. There are, however, a few home repair jobs that need tending to.

Oregon has pretty nasty taxes if you are single, rent, and claim yourself as a dependent. I will be lucky if I don't owe money.

^Texas has NO state income tax.

Hence the crappy roads, lack of social workers and piss-poor public transportation. We have property taxes, hotel and airport taxes, and sales tax. That's pretty much it.

I got a $5,000 refund this year, which was surprising since I had nothing withheld last year. But I'm in a different situation from most of you.

Question: How many of you 1) do your taxes yourself, 2) hire an accountant, or 3) use tax preparation services such as Jackson Hewitt or (probably a much better choice) H&R Block?

Accountant. I bitch and moan about how much their firm costs me, but actually they're really excellent at what they do and generate significant savings for me, easily handling multiple income streams with aplomb and (tax-)efficiency. So I tolerate their exorbitant fees with good humour. :)

And Texas has entrepreneurs like myself migrating from high-tax areas like Connecticut, buying property, conducting business, contributing to the local economy.

Also - I don't know where in Texas you are, but I haven't seen any shitty roads except way out in the sticks, where you're unlikely to even see more than a few houses every mile.
