Anyone else writing a book?

Again, I wasn't trying to discourage you from doing the magazine; I just don't want you to plan on it being your sole source of income. Writing is something best done for love, not money (it certainly is in my case :rommie:).

The aim is for the magazine to be the primary source of income and the publishable writing second.

Okay, in that case a short story magazine is definitely not what you want to publish.

Yeah, definitely not.

A technology-focused magazine actually would be a much better idea, however you would need a strong web presence to back it up, given the fast-moving nature of the technology world.

I intend to have a print- and e-zine with the same information on them and of course the e-zine would be cheaper to subscribe to, probably 2/3 of the price since it costs nothing to produce once the magazine itself is done, and it'll be a good ad campaign to advertise that the green magazine is also available in paper-free format.

^I and a group of my friends set up a website and I'm writing a motion comic, hopefully the first episode will be up in the next few weeks (I don't know how much time it's going to take to animate and program). But I've really enjoyed writing it actually, and it'll be good to sorta get my name out there.

No one have any writing projects?

I've just started my novel up again and it's at 35,127 words

Actually, I went back to my next book and started over. I didn't like how it was beginning so I decided to start the story six weeks ahead of the original beginning, so it would get right to the meat. Only did one chapter so far. Gotta keep going!

I've submitted my novel to the only 16 agents I could find who accept SF/F and also accept email submissions.

I'm going to do a round of mail submissions over the next couple of weeks, but I'm starting to think about publishing the novel online, in serial format. The way I'd written it each chapter kind of ends is a cliffhanger anyway. I could post a chapter 3 times a week and offer an option to purchase the entire thing for X amount of dollars.

I'd rather get it published in an actual book form and be on shelves but it's kind of a strange novel, not sure how to sell it really. Time travel, gigantic insects, out of body consciousness, mostly told from the point of view of a 7 year old ...

I finished my book today: C A Melopard, The Black and Tans: British Police and Auxiliaries in Ireland, 1920-21.

The manuscript is about five hundred pages and a thousand footnotes long, and will hopefully be coming to fine academic bookstores everywhere in--oh, about a year or so.

Tomorrow, I send off a proposal to Oxford University Press. My external supervisor recommended them, and since he's part of their editorial board, I figure he should know. It's a pretty sexy topic, for a work of academic history, and I might as well start at the top.

But tonight, I celebrate. I plan to order pizza and have two--hell, maybe even three beers! Let the good times roll!

Anyone else writing a book at present? How's it going?

Finished one (P.I. Mystery series) and in the process of writing 2 (P.I. Part 2 and a fantasy/sci-fi trilogy) others. I'm just waiting to go back to work, so I can fund the publishing of the first one. (I can't seem to land an agent, even though I've been published before.):(

Luminus, how did you get the other thing published? Did you have an agent then?

The thing I got published was a short private-eye mystery in a newspaper. I had a friend that knew the publisher of the newspaper and she set-up a meeting. I talked my way into getting published. The novel I need to fund (editing, other self-publishing fees via lulu.com), is the continuing adventures of that published story's main character (although, some things have been retconned).

^Maybe you should try getting published through an independent press rather than a big publishing house, you're more likely to get somewhere then.

My novel is now at 38,500 words.

Don't I need an agent for that? Anyway, I'm sick of writing query letters. These people take months to respond to you and when they do, it's a useless form letter. I'm not getting any younger. I need to make this happen.

I actually took a break to work on a couple of things for Big Finish's Dr Who Short Trip contest. Whether I make the deadline or not isn't important, it's just been fun to work on. If nothing else, it's been a good excuse to take over the DVD player for "research" by watching some Dr. Who DVDs

My book has stalled for the moment, but I'm working on a group project, and I just got done plotting a serial for an ezine I'm contributing to, so I gotta work on that.

Agents usually have contacts with the big publishing houses, not so much with small independent presses because the money isn't there to make it worth their time. The independent presses will respond quicker and generally without form letters. I would try that before spending the money on self-publishing. If your book is good enough to be on the shelves, someone will pick it up.

...If your book is good enough to be on the shelves, someone will pick it up.

That's not true. I've worked in one of these publishing houses before, and the difference between a rejection letter and a full manuscript request or acceptance is often in the hands of 1 intern. That's very problematic for a writer. In fact, that's how Harry Potter got picked up. Someone working in the office (a secretary or something) read it and said, hey, this is great. Meanwhile, agents were rejecting her manuscript left and right.
