Thoughts on the Complete Specials box set

I picked up the Complete Specials box set yesterday, in Blu-Ray, and proceeded to spend most of the evening pouring through it. Here are some thoughts. I don't know if I need to put a spoiler warning up, but if you don't want to know details about the extras like the video diaries, look away, look away!

First, there's no reason for it to take up 5 discs - one per special. The way Blu-ray is set up they could have included 2 specials and two Confidentials per disc and trimmed it by a couple of discs. The only rationale I can think of is they simply cut-and-pasted the DVD template over to Blu-Ray to save the effort. One bit of evidence in support is the Eric Idle "Thanks for Buying this DVD" promo is still included on disc 1, despite it being irrelevant to the Blu-Ray release.

Next Doctor looks great up-converted. There's no reason why the first 4 seasons can't be converted this way. Especially since footage from the first 4 years is included in the HD Confidential episodes.

Sadly, Doctor Who at the Proms is in standard def (as is the Music of the Spheres mini-episode within) but it still looks great on the HD screen. (That said I'm using a 720 plasma, not a 1080 LCD so your mileage may vary).

Speaking of Doctor Who Confidential, either BBC Video ponied up a few extra quid or they're BS'ing when they say the "Cutdown" versions on the past sets were required due to licensing issues. This set has 4 <STRIKE>complete and uncut</STRIKE> Confidentials complete with licensed music and clips from the classic series - all the stuff they technically weren't supposed to be able to release to DVD. Bodes well for future complete versions of Confidential to be issued later.

EDIT/CORRECTION: I read the small print on the box and in fact the Confidentials have been edited "for contractual reasons". Nonetheless they're still full-length, which is a darn sight better than the 15-minute versions we're used to, and they still managed to include footage and music of the type that usually got chopped in previous versions. (I tried to find the coding for doing a strikethrough but couldn't)

The final Confidential has some fascinating footage of RTD meeting Matt Smith for the first time, and behind the scenes of the regeneration. No footage of the two Doctors meeting - in fact Tennant says he actually left before Smith shot his scene. The episode ends with a great music video tribute to the Tenth Doctor era that I'm sure is on YT already, being claimed as a fan-made project by somebody. Also included in the final Confidential is an alternate take of "I don't want to go" that might have had fans crying even more than they did. And there is a symbolic passing of the torch when RTD leaves the set and allows Steven Moffat to come in and oversee Smith's part of the regeneration.

David's video diaries are great. He spends a lot of time on Planet of the Dead and none at all on Waters of Mars or End of Time 1. There's a great interlude where he's shown hosting a radio show with Catherine Tate (in fact it's the Jonathan Ross show that the two co-hosted again just this past weekend) - and depending on your liking for the Proclaimers, his performance of "500 Miles" will either be a classic moment or one of those "what is seen cannot be unseen" moments! I loved it, personally.

Be advised, though, you'll need some kleenex towards the end when we see David on his last day shooting for Doctor Who (though he didn't know at the time that he'd be shooting a couple episodes of Sarah Jane later).

The Christmas idents are included. This extra clocks in at less than a minute - shortest bonus feature ever? Sadly they didn't include the two Christmas messages Tennant recorded, just the gags with the reindeer. I thought they were in HD until I read the fine print on the box and saw they were only standard definition.

There's also a featurette covering Tennant's appearance at San Diego Comic Con last year, where he's treated like a rock star. And yes, "the kiss" is included. So is the teaser trailer for End of Time that was shown which, otherwise, is omitted (along with any other trailers) from the set.

The deleted scenes aren't particularly revelatory, though there's a cute moment with Michelle Ryan that was chopped from Planet of the Dead. There's also a scene that was cut from Waters of Mars that serves to fill in a plot hole (how did the Doctor know they were called The Flood?). The deleted scenes from The Next Doctor are presented in their original videotape format, and again show that Doctor Who would actually look quite good if they'd gone back to showing it on videotape like they did in the 80s. The high-def scenes, however, appear to have been already processed for the film look. The deleted scene with Michelle looks almost 3-D.

One thing that I did note is the Blu-Ray/DVD labels the scenes "Series 4 Specials". That ought to stoke the flames as to whether to consider the specials part of Season 4 or not. Tennant makes a similar observation in his diary when he notices POTD is listed as Episode 15 of Season 4.

Any missing items? Well, the Tonight's the Night skit, which is actually referenced in the Video Diaries in a "blink and you'll miss it" sort of way, would have been nice to see. As I mentioned there were trailers and a couple of Christmas idents missing. Also, remembering how the Eccleston season set included the Confidential introducing David Tennant, I was actually surprised that they didn't include at least a Cutdown version of the Confidential that introduced Matt Smith. Or at least the official BBC trailer for Series 5.

I was also surprised at who was not seen in interviews either for Confidential or the Diaries. Claire Bloom was such a huge name to have appear, yet she isn't so much as mentioned. And you'd think Tennant or the Confidential crew would have captured his reunions with the past companions.

Still, I'm glad I bought the set and I think it was worth the money (less than Cdn.$50 at Best Buy). The extras are worth the price of admission, alone. And if you don't happen to care for, say, Planet of the Dead, the good news is BBC Video has issued Waters of Mars and End of Time separately, so all 5 specials are available a la carte.

EDIT: What's high-def and what's not. In editing this post I found myself correcting some info as to what's high-def and what isn't. For those who care:

High Def: all episodes, all Confidentials, Deleted Scenes, Doctor Who at Comic Con.
Not High Def: David Tennant Video Diaries, Doctor Who at the Proms (including Music of the Spheres), the Christmas Idents.

My thought on it is... is it actually in any shops? So far, I've only been able to find the Winter Specials set!

Isn't that the same thing? I'm talking about the set with Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, Waters of Mars and End of Time.

Depends where you are, of course, but it's been out in the UK for a month and was in North America as of yesterday. I found a copy at Best Buy here in Calgary and as anyone who has been following my posts know, I've been very critical of Best Buy here in the past for not bringing in new releases like Doctor Who in a timely fashion. Not only did they have it, but for about $5 than Amazon (which of course is your other option if retailers aren't carrying it where you live). They also had the individual releases of Waters and End of Time.

I haven't been able to find it in Best Buy or in Borders, and even Amazon seems to have trouble dispatching it to me in a timely fashion, even though I paid extra for it. :scream:

I've been hearing a number of stories like that.

I had already bought the Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead dvds. When I checked Amazon, I was rather annoyed (but not surprised) to find out that the price of the individual dvds (End of Time and Waters of Mars) together was only 3 bucks less than the price of the complete box set. By waiting, I could have saved 20 bucks.

Still, instead of double dipping, I bought the two individual dvds and they arrived on Tuesday. But those who bought the complete box set are still waiting. Not all, I hear there are some who have gotten them, but most are still waiting. *shrug*

Only real difference I can see is that I have four cases instead of one, and I didn't have to wait.

I wonder if it's a US thing? Certainly there have been cases of Region 1 releases being issued in the US on day of, but being delayed in Canada. So eventually the reverse had to happen, I guess.

All that said, another branch of the BBC, BBC Books, had a major screw up when it was supposed to release the Writers Tale book on Jan 21st, but it wasn't available at any retailers (except those ordering from the UK). So maybe this is an offshoot of that?

Then again, I just checked Amazon.com (and .ca) and they list the set as "in stock" so there should be no delay in ordering from them, at any rate.

I haven't checked to see if the individual releases have the same extra features as the box set when all are added together. I do know there's no Blu-Ray edition of The Next Doctor coming out by itself, and the DVD omits the Confidential, so there's at least one item that's unique to the box set, anyway. If you aren't interested in a BR version of Next Doctor, and if extras don't mean anything, then there's certainly no need to wait if the individual releases are available. Size-wise, the box is the equivalent thickness of the 3 Blu-Ray cases so you're saving the space of just the Next Doctor DVD clamshell.

No, it's not a US thing: I'm in the UK. The Winter Specials set (Waters of Mars + End of Time) is everywhere, but I've yet to spot the Complete Specials set (Next Doctor through to End of Time) in the shops, though it is available online (or at least promised online).
Unfortunately there's sufficiently little I like in that set to bother to order it online rather than getting it on a completist whim (which is why I didn't bother get the one-off releases of Next-Doc and Plan-Dead).

Maybe it's sold out? I haven't heard any other mention of the set not being easy to find, especially a month later. Amazon.co.uk says you can get it by Friday if you order in the next 19 hours, ;) so that probably means they have plenty of copies.

The reason I asked the "is it the US" question is although the box set speaks a good game about it being huge in America, Doctor Who isn't that big and I could see shops ordering the Winter Specials set (though I think that's just a UK thing) and either not realize about the full-length collection or not bother assuming they won't sell any. I had a devil of a time trying to find any place that sold the Series 1 set back in 2006 - I ended up ordering it online. Today that stuff's easy to find everywhere. In theory, at least. I can't imagine a UK retailer being in the same position given how huge Doctor Who is over there, though. Does Michael Grade own the shop? ;)

Doubt it, as it's not even on the bestsellers' chart at Tesco, HMV and Smiths (who routinely sell out of the the classic series releases, but do leave a gap on the shelves). When I was last in London at HMV's flagship Oxford Street store two weeks back (which is pretty much the biggest DVD shop in Britain now) they didn't have it...
Still, got the Morbius, Master (etc) figures that day so can't grumble (though getting them home was a nightmare when the bag came open on the tube! But that's another story...).

I picked up my Complete Specials set from Amazon.ca at the post office today and I can't wait to dive in! Thanks for the overview, Alex.

Those cut-down confidentials we got on the earlier dvds (and also which are shown and repeated in syndication) are pretty crap compared to the full fledged versions first shown in the UK.

So I am assuming these ones on the specials blu-ray have all the clips and bits from classic doctor who all set to various bits of (commercially available) music/songs included in the confidentials ?

That is still weird. I haven't heard anyone else in the UK mentioning they weren't able to find it. When I said sold out I was referring more to under-ordering. I can into that with the last box set where a local store only bothered ordering 5 copies and they were gone before they were put on the shelf.

According to the back of the box they have been edited "for contractual reasons" meaning there may be interviews and music removed from the versions that originally aired. But the running time is still full-length and while I haven't watched them all, the two connected to End of Time do have plenty of classic series clips although I did notice there was no footage from the 1996 movie during an overview of the Master.

I got my copy on day of release from HMV, no problems whatsoever. Seemed to have plenty of stock as well.

From my experience, both Asda and Tesco are useless at stocking Blu Ray stuff like this in-store.

Was in a different HMV today and they had both the DVD and blu ray sets.

If it was in the Confidential and we didn't get it on the DVD, it's likely because the BBC would have had to clear the footage with Vivendi, who holds the video rights to the 1996 film in North America. I'm honestly surprised that the McGann image in "The Next Doctor" was on the Region 1 DVD.

^ To me, being forced to omit the 8th Doctor's image in that very quick sequence would have been very petty.

Same here. And they have had TVM footage in other DVD releases, though. I've drawn a blank on which ones exactly but I believe it was on a classic series release, and I was very surprised to see it. Plus a few years back when Region 1 DVDs included the Doctor Who 40th anniversary Orbital music video as a bonus, the footage with McGann was intact.

My guess is the clips used in those examples, as well as the short clip in The Next Doctor, fell under fair use. The whole issue with the rights might only apply to the complete film (or a substantial portion thereof) and not just clips. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to avoid paying the Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, etc. representatives for those clips in the same way. I'm just starting to read the updated Writers Tale so maybe RTD touches on this.

It would have ruined the episode for me so I'm glad they didn't. I wish the BBC would pony up the money to "bring the Doctor home", especially now BBC Worldwide is getting into bed with Fox with regards to a potential US Torchwood and US Doctor Who. If one good thing comes out of that mess, I hope it's the BBC getting the rights back to the TV movie. It's not as if Universal/Vivendi or Fox are doing anything with that particular property. Which makes their refusal to come to terms on a DVD release all the more stupid. Once the thing bombed in the US, they should have just said "give us a few thousand bucks and take this off our hands" rather than sitting on it like a packrat.

Alex

Doesn't the Doctor Who Donfidential on the Region 1 Planet of the Dead DVD include a few clips from the 96 movie?
