The AMPAS just announced their nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards and Star Trek received several nominations, but missed on for Best Picture of 2009. It looks like The Blind Side might have slipped in and taken a spot that could've gone to Trek.

Not surprised

Yeah, I could tell yesterday that its chances for Best Picture had come and gone. I'm actually surprised it got a Best Makeup nomination considering there wasn't much great makeup work.

On a separate note, it could actually win Best Makeup and be the first Oscar ever won for Star Trek.

No, most likely District 9 was the spoiler. I considered it a longshot to see two SF films on the list. Avatar was pretty much a no-brainer, but District 9 really seemed like a surprise because I heard no Oscar buzz when that came out.

I don't think so. District 9 was always going to get a nomination. It is seen as a superior film which is why it also received a Screenplay nomination from the Oscars and Golden Globes, and received Best Director and Best Screenplay noms from the BAFTAs.

You've got at least three skiffy movies on the list - Avatar, District 9 and Up - and two of those are "popcorn flicks." I think that was enough for the Academy.

The Academy is just whoring themselves anyway. 10 best pic noms? Why not 10 best director noms? 10 best actor noms?

They just want ratings.

Of course it's for ratings. But to be fair, they used to do 10 pics back from 1933-1943...not sure why they changed it to ten and then back to five though.

I would swap District 9 for Star Trek. I just watch District 9 and it was one of the worst movie i have seen in my life. The story made no sense at all and the aliens were just awful. I would nominate it for Razzie award as one of the worst movie of the year lol.
Star Trek is masterpiece compare to District 9.

How did the story not make sense? It was about racism, apartheid, and the violent culture that it spawns.

Anyway, I agree about the Blind Side being the spoiler, but I suppose that's a populist film. I don't mind Star Trek not being nominated, but surely there are better films than the Blind Side.

I agree. There were several movies I thought were better than The Blind Side, including (500) Days of Summer and Crazy Heart.

Get real, it never had ANY chances for a Best Picture nomination. The reviews were all like "For a movie called Star Trek, it's surprisingly good." and that's it.

If you look at the movie review sites like rottentomatoes and metacritic, you'll find that you're quite simply wrong. Plus, it was nominated for a PGA award.

It's too bad opening up the field didn't change anything for the Academy. As usual most of the movies in the Best Picture Category are extremely overrated.

...talk about getting real

Anyway, 4 nominations are good.
I wasn't expecting a best picture nomination but what do I know. I've never really bothered with the awards other than checking who won.
Though I suppose if that Sandra Bullock movie got in maybe we should feel robbed after all. Hmm...

Maybe next time.

The Blind Side isn't a bad movie or anything (just not good enough for Best Picture - but if Trek had gotten in, I'm sure other people would be saying the same thing).

Sandra Bullock actually does a really good job in it though and deserved the nomination for Best Actress.

Star Trek is entirely pedestrian compared to District 9. District 9 is science fiction at it's best: providing a social commentary in a fictional setting. Something not uncommon for Star Trek, but that was completely missing from the most recent Star Trek movie.
