What did you all think?

My thoughts (relatively spoiler-free, though I imagine later ones might not be):

This is a really cute story, a really fantastic authorial job at finding a hole in the TOS tale and filling it beautifully. Sure, it’s a little bit small-universe-syndrome-y to have Leila and Carol end up working together, but I’ll grant it, because it really makes a neat little twist of intersecting stories to play with.

Oddly, seeing Kirk and Spock as young people dealing with balancing personal affairs and work sort of makes me relate to them more, or at least in a different way, than I have before; the story resonated unexpectedly as a result. On top of that, the book plays with issues of environmentalism vs. progress that are incredibly important topics right now, but without at all being preachy; the discussion here is a genuine discussion from both sides, and while I know which side I fall on by and large, I feel as though many of Star Trek’s strongest moments have been in presenting conflicts like this fairly, rather than doing the all too common preaching at the audience that Something Is Wrong.

The romantic tension and social awkwardness in the Leila / Spock relationship is really hilariously constructed, too. A tiny little romantic comedy, but without the silliness. It doesn’t read anything like Abrams’s version of Spock at roughly the same age, but it’s certainly believable as Nimoy’s portrayal.

In all, it’s clear that this story was a story the authors wanted to tell and loved to write; it’s full of charm and emotion and surprisingly deep explorations. The plot’s a little thin, and the book’s a little short, but neither of those is actually a problem. It’s not an ambitious book, and it’s not an ambitious story, but it accomplishes everything it sets out to do beautifully. I definitely enjoyed and recommend it highly.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

I've been curious about this since I first heard about it, and now after reading your review I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it. From what I remember of your previous reviews, our tastes seem to line up pretty closely, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it. It sounds like it deals with some pretty interesting issues, and I've always been curious to see what Kirk and Carol Marcus's original relationship was like.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

One impression I had was that the end wrapped up a little too quickly, but a little thought reminded that it was supposed to end up with unresolved threads -- the ones we'd see explored later on-screen.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

I'm just over 100 pages into Inception, and I'm really liking it so far. I agree with Thrawn that the book (so far) isn't really an ambitious story, but it seems to be telling a story that I want to read, and filling in a "hole" very nicely. I like seeing Kirk and Spock as younger men, even though I know that they are in no real danger. I'll check back ijn once I'm finished...

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

I'm reading it now. I'm enjoying it, though, as I admitted in another thread, I was a teensy disappointed that

Carol Marcus wasn't the little blond lab tech mentioned in "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

Yeah, me too. It was the perfect opportunity to take advantage of a coincidence that seemed tailor-made for continuity. Why did the authors even mention that other person if they weren't going to seize the opportunity?

I don't see it that way. Inception takes place 6-7 years after Kirk left the Academy. If Carol Marcus were the LBLT, it would have had to have been an "on again, off again" type of relationship to allow for Kirk's other established old flames. (I thought Ruth would have made a good candidate, but apparently they went with Janet Wallace instead.)

The other route, which Inception takes, is to make Carol a Game Changer. While the other women were either young romance or "good times between friends plus", Carol hit him deeply enough to question what he really wanted out of his life and career. Arguably, that fits his reaction in WOK better, with the "opening old wounds" line, than the sort of flirtatious byplay he had upon meeting Areel Shaw or Janet Wallace again after a few years.

Janet Wallace makes more sense. Kirk saw an illusion of the Ruth he'd known at the Academy, a woman in her 30s (the actress was 32 at the time). That would've made her nearly twice his age when he knew her. The description "little blonde lab technician" seems too diminutive to fit an "older woman" like that.

So Inception puts Kirk's relationship with Carol in 2261? That does slightly contradict Vanguard, which puts David at 5 going on 6 in early 2266, meaning he would've had to be conceived in mid-to-late 2259.

I have to be honest; that's the kind of minor detail that just doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Does it specify that Dr. Marcus or whomever indicated David as 5 going on 6 was thinking in Terran years? ;)

That's my (rather silly, I know) hand wave. It's what I'm pulling out of my posterior to keep the precious continuity in check.

Enjoying "Inception" so far, by the way. It's a nice change of pace.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

So, David Marcus aged the same way Alexander Rozhenko and Molly O'Brien did. No contradiction here!

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

I just finished it and I quite enjoyed it. I just wish we would have been given the scene where Carol tells Jim about David. I didn't just miss this did I? I was waiting for it, but then nothing...

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

I enjoyed it a lot. It was a very character driven book, which is my favorite kind.

Paris:
I was wondering if that was going to happen in this book or not. In the Vonda McIntyre's novelization of Wrath of Khan, Kirk never knew until he met David in the Regula cave. So this would keep the two books consistent. (Although granted it wouldn't be consistent with the movie, since Kirk obviously knew in that version when he tells Carol "I did what you asked. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?")

I also seem to recall a book coming out in the 90's that dealt with a young David; anyone know which one that was, and if that was where Carol tells Kirk?

I think Carol knew there was no way she could tell Kirk in Inception, because she knew if she did then he would have stayed with Carol and possibly left Starfleet, and after seeing him handle the sabotage crisis she didn't want to do that to him. I think also seeing how military he could be scared her a little, and she didn't want that for David.

I believe the book you're thinking of was Faces of Fire by MJF. I've listened to the audiobook version, and I remember something about Carol & David being in some kind of trouble. I believe Spock sees David and knows the truth right away...or something to that effect.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

^Yes, Faces of Fire is the book in question. In pretty much every Carol/David story I've seen in print -- the TWOK novelization, FoF, Howie Weinstein's "Star-crossed" storyline for DC Comics -- Kirk doesn't discover that David is his son until well after his birth, though they all differ on when that discovery happens. So it sounds like Inception is consistent with all of them, though they're not consistent with each other.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

Maybe something will make her decide to tell him some time during or after Vanguard.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

Just finished it - it's... OK.. the prose is fine and the characters are well written but nothing much happens.

That's for sure. I'm half way through and about the only scene where something "happens" is when Kirk out debates the ecology friendly guy, but Kirk does that in a room full of people who agree with him anyway so nothing changes. Except maybe the ecology guy gets angry? And he clenches his fist or something.

Re: Inception - Grade/Review Thread (probable spoilers ahead)

Finished last night. It was OK, but didn't really do much for me.

Remember a year or so when the idea reared its head in one of those interminable "Bring Back Janeway" threads that what Treklit needed was a line of Trek Romances?

Looks like Margaret (or whoever greenlit this book) was paying attention, because that's just what Inception is: A big, fat Star Trek romance novel.

Not really to my tastes at all.

I was surprised that Leila Kalomi came off better that Carol Marcus in the end, principally because Leila
found the guts to actually tell "her officer" how she felt. Carol just kind of wimped out, never telling Kirk what was up. I found her behavior cowardly.

I'm pretty sure it was Marco, not Margaret.

And I'm pretty sure the project was launched before Before Dishonor was published.

And I'm more than sure you give far too much credit to the chatterings of the internet.
