PRE-Regeneration Endorfins??

GeneHunt

Commander
Red Shirt
Do time lords normally get a dose of pre-regeneration endorfins that makes the current body apethetic about dying?

The reason I ask is that no other doctor has ever seemed sad about dying before (even 10 himself the first time he thought he was going to die) - so did 10's endorfins wear off by the time he actually regenerated since he took so long to do it?

Discuss.

Well, the Fifth doctor wondered as he was on the floor of the Tardis if this was it.

Actually, most of the Docs seemed pretty unhappy about regeneration...some where more at peace, but not of them were happy about it...Even the Fourth Doctor called it the end.

So, I'm not sure the premise of your question is sound.

I dunno, 9 seemed pretty indifferent to the whole thing.

"There were so many things we were going to do."

"Before I go, I just want to say you were fantastic. And you know what? So was I."

These are not the sentiments of a man who is long for this world. I was actually a little surprised when I went and looked at some regeneration scenes in full a few days ago on YouTube and saw how the Doctor, when he expressed an opinion on it, generally acted like he was actually dying for reals. And then there's the crossfade and, as someone one said, "Some new man goes sauntering off."

Well, maybe I was just indifferent to it.

I don't think it was so much that he was indifferent as that he was happy he finally got to redeem himself for the destruction of Gallifrey -- by being willing to sacrifice himself to save someone he loved.

As for the prior Doctors...

I think the thing to note is that in most of those situations, the thing that led to their deaths was an unavoidable part of resolving whatever life-or-death situation the Doctor happened to be in at that moment, and it was usually unexpected. That's why the Doctor didn't freak out when he thought he was going to regenerate in "42" or in "The Stolen Earth" for instance -- there was a crisis still going on, and it was all just too immediate to really react to the situation in any meaningful emotional sense.

Meanwhile, the Second Doctor raged against his regeneration, and the Sixth and Seventh Doctors weren't even conscious for their own regenerations.

And absolutely none of the prior Doctors were warned months and months in advance (relatively-speaking) of their imminent regenerations, went through the crisis they thought would lead to their regenerations, survived it, thought they were out of the woods -- and then instantly had the rug yanked from under them in the form of a very small, very personal crisis that they could very easily have walked away from with the consent of the very person who would die.

^The fourth Doctor did, although only hours or days in advance.

"I have just dipped into the future. We must be prepared for the worst."
