Final Cover for Unspoken Truth.

To the completely uninitiated, it looks like a part of the Chrysler Building, but then, these aren't folks who would generally be cruising that section of the bookstore in the first place.

This is one venue where playing to the home crowd isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The design of the buildings actually make me think not of any particular building on Earth but of the skyscrappers of Taris, one of the planets seen in the Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic. If it weren't for the words 'Star Trek,' I'd almost think the book was for a different franchise.

I agree, the buildings look very similar to those of Taris. The Taris towers can be seen here and here.

I quite like it. It's low key, gives nothing away, and looks intriguing in and of itself. I've always been a fan of the more unique covers (Engines of Destiny, Federation reprint) than the standard Head+Ship+Planet/Starscape formula that defined the line for so long.

I hate to sound ignorant (I guess somebody has to) but I haven't seen the movies in quite a while. So, in the description, it says " Left behind on Vulcan while the rest of the Enterprise crew goes to face court-martial for stealing and destroying their ship..." Does this mean it would be taking place right after TSfS, or TVH? Because I know the stole and destroyed their ship in TSFS, but they didn't face court-martial for it until the end of TVH? Or, I don't know, see, I'm confusing myself. I really need to watch those again.

It would be after the beginning of TVH. TVH starts with the crew on Vulcan repairing the Bird-of-Prey they stole in TSfS, and when they leave Saavik stays on Vulcan.

^Yeah... it sounds like the book is offering an answer for why Saavik disappeared from the film series following her brief appearance in TVH. Apparently she had her own problems to deal with.

We know what happened. She got a makeover and changed her name to Valeris. ;)

Haven't there been problems in the past with continuity clashes over what happened with Saavik after she disappeared from the films? Wasn't there a book where she married Spock?

Yeah, but it's set in 2344, around the time of the destruction of the Enterprise-C. I don't think there's been anything that has specifically gone into why she didn't return to Earth with the Enterprise crew, just to speak on their behalf.

She got space herpes?

No, but there was a return to the Enterprise (DC Comics, Series II), after Sulu left for Excelsior. And she has a brief meeting with Valeris in one issue.

There have been a few different takes on her later career, but I don't recall any major contradictions between them. And if there were, those works came out before internovel continuity became the norm, so I wouldn't call them "problems" or "clashes," just alternate approaches.

I haven't referenced the comics, but there's nothing in Unspoken Truth that contradicts Vulcan's Heart. ;)
