Why the Hell was Roswell cancelled?

Guy Gardener

I'm half way through season two (and still marching forward.) after a week of near constant viewing, less an undesirable life, and this television seems like perfect entertainment especially compared to something as limited and droogy as Smallville which is trying to tell almost exactly the same story less several dimensions.

What happened?

This is in the UPN Vs The WB era...if it had debuted this fall...it would have been a hit for The CW, I believe the same about Tarzan(The WB's).

It Started on The WB & then moved to UPN.

So anything on either networks would have to be doing better than anything on both networks combined.

Season three happened. And do I recall correctly that Katherine Heigl was already pulling an Izzy and wanted to leave the show? It's been a while so I may be misremembering. First season was perfection. Second season started going off-track a bit as I recall. And season three was a mess. And yeah, the ratings dropped each season.

If you wanted to be a dick you could say it's because it had two of the most annoying lead actors of any show. Shiri Appelby's nasally voice was irritating as hell and Liz Parker deserved to be slapped in the face 90% of the time. Max was no better.

I think the problem with Roswell ultimately was that the WB didn't know what kind of show it should be. It started off and it was kinda teen drama with a twist (they're aliens), at times the alien stuff was almost a side-story and not important or just a little flavoring to an episode. So Roswell built up a fanbase mainly interested in the teen drama aspect, then the WB pushed Sci-Fi more and pushed for story arcs and so the show took a strange change of direction and it alienated(no pun intended) some of the original fans of the show.

Then to start S2 they brought in Ron Moore to take it in even more of a sci-fi direction, but I think at that point people who had written the show off as too much teen drama had checked out back at the start of S1 and weren't coming to see how it was now and the fanbase who had stuck around started to dwindle as they didn't like the changes to the format of the show.

Not enough people watched it, obviously.

Season three was not what caused its cancellation - it was dropped by its network and picked up for another season by UPN, but its performance didn't impress them either.

The "I Married An Alien" sitcom episode was fun.

Life unexpected is a hoot, but I was noticing a little too much saccharin in the second episode that they be aiming to tyng off every episode with a bow and a smile which is just not my bad baby.

I did fall asleep during the first episode of season 3. Is that an omen? Or was it late and I had already watched ten episodes. The entire disposing of Collin hanks was off, in the beginning he was rarely used as if he never mentioned who his dad was during the audition, nd then it took thm a while to cotton on and fully exploit him.

I remember thinking how extreme Katherine's haitcut was in season three, and in hindsite that was probably a contributing attribute to the fall because the viewership is vain. Or course Now on Gray's, I have done seen her all bald.

Politics and an off third season you say?

I noticed on imdb, that majandra is having a minor role in one of Katherine's new movies currently in production. It might be a conincidence or they might have been "galpals" doing the networking thing.

I loved the narration thingy they started doing at the end of season two.

They were actually talking to me.

It's nice when your TV doesn't snub you for once.

Roswell moved from WB to UPN.
Roswell was not picked up for a combo of about three reasons, two of which have been touched on.
It's ratings didn't improve significantly from the move, the didn't drop either significantly either which is where the next two points come in.
Katherine Heigl wanted out, she wanted to try out for the Greys Anatomy role
Adam Rodriguez also wanted out to get onto CSI:Miami

With ratings not improved to impress and two main actors wanting out the show was cancelled. They tried to do a pseudo wrap up but it could be continued if anyone ever wanted to via novels or comics.

I actually saw all of Roswell just within the last 6 months or so. I thought season 3 was mediocre to abysmal. Some terrible stuff going on there.

I do feel as though the decline in entertainment started somewhere in season 2 though.

Season 1 was good. After that? Well I guess it was kind of like "Heroes."

2 episodes have aired, it's nice, and actually why I reinvested my attention on Roswell. The lad in the Life unexpected is Cupid from the recently failed Valentine series which I thought was just delightful, not to be confused with Cupid from the recently failed Cupid series.

Everything gets cancelled :(
