O'Brien out, Leno back in?

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said about that final episode. When I saw Neil Young in the credits I told my wife "He'll do 'Long May You Run,'" and I was glad to be right. It was a little more melancholy than Letterman's Late Night final musical number (Springsteen with a raucous and defiant "Glory Days") so I was wondering a little about how much fight was left in the show. The next 15 minutes laid all doubts to rest. Though I am no fan of Will Farrell, the finale was just about perfect. The song which has become the butt of so many classic rock jokes somehow, amazingly, made even more of a joke and ending up as something remarkably sincere. A very memorable TV moment.

I have to admit the dual guitar leads didn't really work together, but what the hell, Conan may not have been able to hear everything. At least he looked like he was having a good time.

Regarding Conan's serious parting words, many years ago in a small club I heard punk rock legend Mike Watt say something similar that has stuck with me. He said, "Be very, very skeptical, but don't be cynical." I've always liked that philosophy, and Conan's similar sentiments on his final Tonight Show left me with the feeling that Conan is in a great position for the future. Believing in nothing and simply making fun of everything is a shallow well of creativity; Conan and his team are in it for the long haul.

Conan's first Late Night

I was watching Conan's final farewell last night and found it very sentimental. For me, personally, in terms of late night talk shows, Conan's going to be the one I remember fondly - very much like those of the generations before me speak of Johnn Carson. I was really enjoying Conan hosting the Tonight Show and remember I couldn't wait for it back when it was announced in 2004.

I refuse to watch Jay Leno's Tonight Show (I never really did anyway). I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now. Imagine what it might be like on the first night he returns.

I'm in the same boat with you when I heard Conan was getting the Tonight Show I was really happy. I can't say I've seen every single episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, but I've seen damned near 95%+ and watched a lot of them get rebroadcast. I remember watching him when he started and that first show I was just starting my sophomore year in High School and I watched it on a little 13 inch TV I had in my room lol.

BTW, thanks for linking that clip it took me to some other Conan shows and I'm watching the black-out from 2003 right now. Crazy day, luckily for some reason Philly didn't lose power (I know I had mine on), but I think somehow Baltimore or DC did.

lol Squiggy guess we're on the same page :)

Same here, except I was a freshman in high school.
Speaking of videos, did anyone else watch the Andy behind the desk 1999 one? That was great!

BTW I just found out something about youtube if you search for masturbating bear you find a helluva lot more real bears masturbating then the character...

:p

Never much cared for Conan before, don't really plan on changing that now. I just never thought he was that funny. I do wish him luck, though.

I admit I fully and completely detest Andy Richter, though. :brickwall: I mean, I liked *Edd Hall* better as a sidekick than that guy. :p

And I don't really get the Leno hate, either. If you don't think he's funny, that's one thing. But I find it hard to believe that he was personally responsible for all this.

well partly that is down to some very sick people, but its also down to NBC taking clips off You Tube.

Personally im not sure "masturbating bear" is very funny, it does not sound funny.

Apparently NBC has been spending the last two days yanking a lot of Conan O'brien clips off of Youtube, including his first late night show and a lot of his charecters as well.

So I was wondering where do you think Conan will film his next talk show? Stay in LA or go back to NY?

If he goes back to NY I hope he recreates the run across america from the first tonight show. Just watched that clip again.

If he does end up at FOX I imagine he'd continue to originate from LA since historically, all FOX late night programming has originated from there. I don't even thing FOX has the infrastructure in New York to air a studio show on this scale. They'd have to buy and renovate a building like the Ed Sullivan Theater.
