I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said about that final episode. When I saw Neil Young in the credits I told my wife "He'll do 'Long May You Run,'" and I was glad to be right. It was a little more melancholy than Letterman's Late Night final musical number (Springsteen with a raucous and defiant "Glory Days") so I was wondering a little about how much fight was left in the show. The next 15 minutes laid all doubts to rest. Though I am no fan of Will Farrell, the finale was just about perfect. The song which has become the butt of so many classic rock jokes somehow, amazingly, made even more of a joke and ending up as something remarkably sincere. A very memorable TV moment.
I have to admit the dual guitar leads didn't really work together, but what the hell, Conan may not have been able to hear everything. At least he looked like he was having a good time.
Regarding Conan's serious parting words, many years ago in a small club I heard punk rock legend Mike Watt say something similar that has stuck with me. He said, "Be very, very skeptical, but don't be cynical." I've always liked that philosophy, and Conan's similar sentiments on his final Tonight Show left me with the feeling that Conan is in a great position for the future. Believing in nothing and simply making fun of everything is a shallow well of creativity; Conan and his team are in it for the long haul.
