Forbidden Planet is my friend

Deranged Nasat

This is a largely pointless post, but I'm in a good mood so I'm sharing. I finally managed to track down my local Forbidden Planet, and it had such a large collection of Trek books, dating back to 2000, that I was able to fill several gaps in my collection, bringing it considerably nearer to completion (keeping in mind that only a few pre-1999 books are on the list). Among others, I was finally able to pick up "Diplomatic Implausibility" and "Once Burned". Yay! Added to that, they had the expanded "Sorrows of Empire" in too, and "Precipice", so its double Mack novel for me as soon as I get the time. To think many of the older books were just sitting there all this time, and I, in my ignorance and stupidity, failed to locate the store. Why, they could have rotted there. Worse: some bastard might have taken them.

This has been a largely pointless Nasat post. Thanks for reading. :)

Yes, Forbidden Planet's are wonderful places, when ever I'm in London I always try and make it to the one on Shaftesbury Avenue! So which one is your "local" Forbidden Planet then?

Hell, I was thinking you meant the one in New York, and nearly got excited to hear they had that many Trek books in stock, as it's been quite awhile since I was last in there... :(

Great pull my friend :techman:. I read DI in an afternoon. It's not very long, and it's an awesome read. If you haven't already, it'll totally make you NEED to pick up the rest of KRAD's Klingon series :klingon::klingon:. Maybe they have those at Forbidden Planet too...

Cambridge. It's small, but amazingly well stocked for its size. My month's free spending money and I went in, and tragically only I emerged...

I have all the other Klingon books. However, I was missing- and still am in a couple of cases- many of the 2001-2002 books which are significant in the modern continuity. DI was one of the ones at the top of my list, and I'm glad I finally got my hands on it. :)

And the movie's not bad either . . . :)

Hmmm...is my compulsive want-want spending my Id monster?

I like FP but am only really impressed with the one in Shaftesbury Avenue in London. The one in Dublin use to have one wall dedicated to Trek books but is now down to a shelf, and prices are 50% higher than in other book shops. The one in Belfast has around ten Trek books I'd estimate. But the one in London is always well worth a visit.

So which one is your "local" Forbidden Planet then?

Cambridge.

Burleigh Street?

I guess so. I'm hopeless with streets (Cambridge is only "local" half the year with me), but I'm guessing there's only one. :) It's the one near East Road and past the large green when heading from the town centre...

EDIT: Having remembered Google is also my friend, yes, it was the one on Burleigh Street.

There used to be a Comics Showcase down that way too, about a hundred years ago. I don't go out to FP all that often because its general stock of SF books isn't all that big - but, to be honest, I think Cambridge isn't great for general SF these days, and particularly since Borders closed. I'm glad to hear the range of Trek books in FP is good though! :)

Both Bath and Salisbury have the same issue. Bristol has a nice big Waterstones and a Forbidden Planet Megastore in Clifton, but that's a pain getting there by public transport.

So this must be one of the smaller Forbidden Planets then? There was one of those in Stoke and when ever I actually went into the city centre from uni, I made a beeline to it just to see what was new.

Update: I went back today and they had "Inception"! I wasn't expecting to see it over here for weeks. :)

Now that Diamond Distributors refuse to list Pocket's ST books (where comic shops and some bookshops used to order an airmail batch), it seems that the localized Simon & Schuster (eg. UK and Australasia) distributors are willing to air freight ST stock from the US instead of sea-freighting it. It's been happening here in Australia since about two months before JJ's movie premiered.

Ah, right. Thanks, Therin. :) That's good to hear.

Don't depend on it, but I get the feeling that sea-freight is falling out of favour with things like books, due to the time delays. These days sending a parcel by air or sea from Australia is very little difference in price. I sent a large parcel this month to the USA @ 2.5 kg, and it was $58.55 by air (about 10 days) and only a saving of $15 to go by sea (and no guarantee it'll be there before three-six months!)
