Star Trek vs Star Wars

I have a preference for Star Trek but I like'em both. I am also very much enjoying the animated SW:The Clone Wars, too. And I am an old....er fellow.

Another vote for "I like both." Never understood this bizarre 'rivalry' or whatever you'd call it.

I did not know there was a conflict between SW and ST fans until I joined this forum. There has always been room for both.
Usually, those who accuse the new movie of "ripping off" or "trying to be like" Star Wars are the Trek-only fanboys. IMO, the new movie merely went back to TOS roots of space adventure instead of preachy diatribes.

^Or whatever you want to call them. There's no counterpart term for "Trekkies", so we might as well make something up.

Personally, I'm leaning towards War-Heads....

^And it sounds kinda lame. Doesn't flow as well as "Trekkies".

I'll take War-Heads.

Hey--sometimes, Star Wars fans, upon encountering a member of The Bretheren, resolve to go nuclear, if you know what I mean....

I like SW, but there's just more Trek out there to enjoy. Plus, the only guys I like in SW are Han Solo, Darth Vader, and the Samuel L Jackson dude (Purple lightsaber FTW!).

My 9-year-old bro was the biggest SW fan ever wearing that dorky huge clone trooper helmet, and since the new film, he keeps asking me to play Star Trek with him. He lets me play Spock, so I agree to it.

Star Trek has Wesley Crusher and Keiko. Star Wars has Jar Jar Binks :P

I bear Star Wars fans no ill will but I was never into it, not even as a kid. My childhood hero was Optimus Prime.

On the other hand, I was a fan of Star Trek from the time I was 11.

The only Star Wars movie that interested me was Revenge of the Sith because I wanted to see how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, that was it.

Incidentally, outside of a ban on genetic engineering in the Federation, I don't see how Star Trek is more conservative than Star Wars.

Star Wars seems to have greater value for tradition, is religious, and has a clear sense of what it considers to be absolute right and wrong.

^Perhaps it does...but there is Obi-Wan's line in Revenge that, "Only the SITH deal in absolutes!"

That's a pretty...non-conservative viewpoint--to say nothing about self-contradictory ("ONLY the Sith"--isn't that an absolute?)

Not this again.

That said, the two will always be bound up with each other. If not for SW, Star Trek would have only come back as another series in the 1970s, which probably would have flopped. Instead, we got a bunch of great (well, ok, good) movies and other series.

Star Wars gave us one, maybe two decent movies. Star Trek gave us more.

Both gave us a legion of unbearable fans.
