SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

As Devin Faraci said, I look forward to Spider-Man saving the residents of Toronto.

Here are some details on the Spider-Man reboot:

Webb, who has options on two sequels, will now tackle a Jamie Vanderbilt script that sees a “Spider-Man” movie that will look and feel very different from the big movies that went before it.

The plan for the movie is to be in the $80 million range and feature a cast of relative unknowns (so you can quash those Rob Pattinson or Gordon-Levitt rumors at this point). And the story will be pared down to center on a high school kid who is dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though the teen had the power to stop it.

The touchstone for the new movie will not be the 1960s comics, which were the inspiration behind the movies by Raimi, who grew on up on them, but rather this past decade’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst.
Well... I am not sure how to react to this. I love the choice of Webb, but $80 million budget with a cast of relative unknowns eschewing the traditional comics and going for something urban and contemporary? Well, we'll see how things go I guess.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Thing is, the Bendis and Bagley concept was pretty faithful to the original books, with the exception of certain twists involving certain characters. One thing I couldn't stand, though, was Bendis's dialogue. I hope they don't try to emulate it.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Well, with the popularity of movies like Juno, who knows. I'm a little more concerned about the "villain-fighting [taking] a back seat to the high school angst" part of that.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^^Sounds like everything that brought Spidey 3 down, is going to be given a front seat in the re-boot.

IOW, a full feature lenght film of everybody crying.

God help us all.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

So long as Tobey Maguire isn't the one crying. Dude's a good actor and all, but he can't cry to save his life. I still can't understand why Raimi okay-ed the lip quivering...

I don't understand why anybody would want to see more of it, no matter who does it. This is Spider-Man, not the Color Purple!

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

A reboot? Already? That's absurd. Hulk was understandable, but the first two Spider-Man movies were massive blockbusters. And I'm sure that despite the fact that a lot of people hated the third one, it had to have made decent money. What's next? An Avatar reboot, coming to theaters in the summer of 2010?

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I think they could still manage some good action scenes on $80 million. They don't have salaries to pay like before, especially if they go with an unknown, and I'm sure Webb doesn't cost nearly as much as Raimi was asking for.

On top of that, in a way, the grunt work for the effects is done. They can cut costs way down by using the CG templates they already have, and they probably have a shitload. Keep it in house, have three major but shorter action sequences. The movie fills out with low rent 90210 wannabes playing emo and a director who's probably ecstatic with a million bucks, and you got yourself an $80 million picture that the tweens will probably give $200 million domestic.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

But isn't that ironic? Now with 3D Avatar being a success, every movie exec and their dog is going to want to do 3D. And I also don't see how they can possibly do a Spider-Man movie for 80 mill. and not make it look like a joke.
Sorry to rain on your AVATAR love but the push for more and more 3D has been going on for a few years now.

I could say:
Since Bloody Valentine everybody wants to do 3D
Since Journey to the Center of the Earth everybody wants to do 3D

We could go adnauseum on this, it has nothing to do with Avatar. Raimi saw it and liked it, what Raimi wanted vs Avatar affecting "everybody" are different things.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Actually, the story really is that Raimi saw Avatar and was so blown away by it that he wanted to utilize the tech for Spider-Man, but Sony didn't want to go there.

Not to mention that the push for 3D that started with the films you mentioned can in many ways trace back to Avatar and Cameron's push for it in the first place.

:)

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Plus, those other films didn't really make a splash. Avatar has been hugely, hugely successful and now everyone will be wanting to make films in 3-D probably partially because of Avatar.

Did people actually see those movies? I actually have no idea what the first one is. Bloody what? What is that, anyway?

Now Beowulf, I saw that, but Avatar certainly does seem to be a game-changer (gee whiz the dreaded buzzword!) as far as 3D goes. Or maybe not; I'm not sold on 3D personally and I saw it in 3D twice.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Well, Raimi sure as hell didn't want to do it because of Superman Returns 3D. No matter what you think about that movie, the 3D was a joke.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

You're all wrong. The 3-D rage goes back to Chicken Little.

;)

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Ultimate Spider-man is awesome. Looking forward to the movie.

..and continued with "Coraline" which was a modest hit.

Wasn't Jim Carrey's "A Christmas Carol" in 3-D too?

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Bring on the World of Warcraft movie! :D
This. Very much so. If Raimi was impressed by the Avatar tech, well, that's exactly the attitude we'd need to make the Warcraft movie work, as I've frequently aggressively opined.

BTW Kegg, "My Bloody Valentine" is a remake of a horror film from the earily 80's.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Ah. I'm not a horror fan and now that I think of it I don't believe I've watched a single horror movie from the 80s (the age of the slasher, I've been told). Was it a hit or something?
