Star Trek XII : Top Secret

Having lived through the pre-Abrams Trek movies and the recent Star Trek, what would you folks prefer for the 2012 sequel ?
Secrecy and confusion or everything open and available to be ripped to pieces months & years before the movie premieres ?

As far as I'm concerned they should absolutely do it like the first movie...keep and even enhance the secrecy.

Let me find out what's happening when the first trailer comes out

Me too. I want to go in not knowing what the plot is, and I don't want to spend the next two years (or however long) with a tinfoil hat on my head trying to avoid spoilers!

I don't expect the earliest leaks and spoilers until sometime toward the very end of this year or sometime into early 2011. But what I'd LIKE to see would be a plot revolving around the Klingon Empire taking advantage of the recent destruction of Vulcan and resulting humanitarian crisis within the Federation to prey on the UFP's border outposts(a'la along the lines of what the Rommies did in "Balance of Terror(TOS)")and test their enemy's mettle for combat as the Empire and High Council decide it's time to expand imperial boundaries.

Then throw in Gary Mitchell and Harry Mudd for comic relief or something. Don't make the film ALL about conflict, intrigue and politics. Toss in some stalwart oldies from TOS that weren't seen or mentioned in the last film to provide some lighter moments.

What movie is complete without someone reading the leaked script and/or all the spoilers and then complaining that the movie didn't offer any surprises?

I like reading all the rumors that are false... they always seem more exciting than what we actually get.

I realize some like the veil of secrecy that can surround a film in production. I respect that feeling, but, I've never fully understood it. Why does the secrecy add to a person's anticipation or possible enjoyment of the movie? [joke] Is it like when a couple says they're saving themselves for their wedding night? [/joke]

For me anyway, the more information that comes out on XII as it's in production, the better. I find being spoiled and trying to root through rumors for what is and isn't true entertaining in and of itself. I guess to continue the above metaphor, I "sleep around" a bit before actually settling down with the movie it in a theater.

΅Well, since I'm a fan of keeping XII top secret...
It doesn't really add much to my anticipation. It adds something to my enjoyment of the movie when I first see it.

I'd like to go in and be genuinely surprised and shocked that Vulcan is destroyed than be robbed of those emotions by months of debate and nitpicking on the subject.
You can say I should stay away from sites like this if i don't want to be spoiled, but then again I'd have to give up quite a few sites I enjoy visiting just to avoid spoilers.
And that would not be fun at all .

I'm not saying I don't enjoy hearing rumors and news and seeing videos or photos from the set. But that happens for just about any movie that is out there.
A change of pace, some mystery every now and then can be refreshing.

That said, even Abrams blew it the last few months and we knew a lot going to see XI.
But what can you do. Promoting the movie had to happen

Makes sense. Guess I'm just at the opposite end of the spectrum. For me, spoilage is part of the experience. But don't worry, I'm not the type who sits in the theater and yells out things like, "Ooh! Here comes the part where Vulcan is destroyed," in the middle of the movie.

I may not want them to leak stuff but when they do I can not resist for long.
I'm weak.

I thought they did a pretty good job of managing and regulating what got out and when on the last movie. For a long time, very little was known, and I think for a lot of people that only served to increase the anticipation. (Yes, there were also complaints earlier on that Abrams and Paramount were holding too much back, but those were never numerous and had basically evaporated by the time of the Entertainment Weekly article in October and the first theatrical trailer in November.) From that point onward, there was a deftly-paced and well-orchestrated promo campaign which only toward the very end was starting to feel like they were giving away too much.

If they can do that again, maybe even improving it and tightening it up further to strike an optimum balance point between too much secrecy and not enough, I think they'll be okay.

I remember watching a movie more than 30 years ago which had that song in the soundtrack. Great scene.

Well said! Even though I'm very anxious about the next movie comming out, I will not watch or read spoliers about the sequel until the actual trailers/tv spots are out. I'm am curious what will happen, but I'll wait until the offical trailers are out. I still want to be taken by surpise with the movie like I was with this one.
