Star Trek vs Star Wars

So what's the deal with the Death Star anyway? Did that thing have Hyperdrive? I always wondered how a planet-sized bulk could travel from one star system to another in a reasonable amount of time. What's the point of making a Space station if it never stays on station?

It did have a hyperdrive, IIRC. Only way it could have gotten from Alderaan to Yavin. The term station is a bit odd in this case though, and I can't really think of a reason to call it one, when it pretty much is a ship (just a frakking huge one).

My experience has been the opposite. The only Star Wars forum I was ever a member of was the KOTOR one, but when the fans there found out that one of the main characters was a lesbian the entire place went beserk.

There were also long posts about how the player character couldn't/shouldn't be female because she wasn't barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.

Sounds pretty conservative to me.

Sure there are sexists and homophobes here, but they're in the minority. The rest of us ridicule them endlessly.

Now...no self-respecting conservative would agree with Obi-Wan when he says, just before fighting Anakin, "Only the SITH deal in absolutes."

That POV is so hard-core liberal that most liberals would denounce that as "off the deep end".

I guess in the grand scheme of things Star Wars fans are babies, I'm 34 years old, became a Star Wars fan in 1980.

Star Wars has other means of transportation than just shuttles, although I admit I do like the design of the Lambda Class shuttle.

I would take a DL-44 blaster over a phaser any day.

Strange comparing the Enterprise with an X-Wing. A Star Destroyer would be a better comparison.

Darth Vader the only villain? What about the Emperor? The legion of stormtroopers, Jabba, Boba Fett, General Veers?

I guess you missed the Mos Eisley Cantina sequence in A New Hope. In general I think Star Wars has had better aliens, even if they did get annoying with Nien Nunb or *shudder* Jar-Jar.

Star Wars has Han Solo.

Star Wars has Tatooine, Naboo, Bespin, Dagobah, Endor, Coruscant, etc.

While I admit I don't like the prequels. I do think Empire Strikes Back is a great film, and I don't think Trek has anything that even remotely compares with it. But then again, I am slightly biased to Star Wars, atleast the original trilogy.

Oh gawd, I've never liked this sort of stuff, especially the "USS Enterprise vs Star Destroyer/Could Kirk kick Luke Skywalker's arse?" type stuff. If we're comparing writing, acting, design etc., I guess that makes a bit more sense, but it's still not easy to compare film to television.

Yeah.

Just ONCE I would like to see Trek heros working WITH the Rebels in one of these things.

Perhaps using clips from First Contact. "We've just recieved word from the fleet", and then, on the bridge, we hear audio from Return of th Jedi, as Picard and company hear the outcome of the attack on the Imperial fleet.

The Enterprise comes to the rescue, Picard senses how to blow up the Death Star (the "exhaust port" from the original movie)--and Star Trek AND the good guys from Star Wars wins.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOO...it HAS to be either Star Wars getting blown up by Star Trek (getting TONS of hateful reviews), or Star Wars blowing up Star Trek (getting tons of cheers).

One laughable clip has the Rebels blowing up Picard's Enterprise...AND Kirk's Enterprise...AND Sulu's Excelsior.

Shame on Star Wars for trying to appeal to a younger audience and not just the 20-40-somethings that grew up on the OT. I have my problems with the prequels but the fact is they have done a lot to keep the franchise going and I am glad they have.

Star Trek has shuttles too, plus wasn't the transporter created purely to save money so they didn't have to have a lot of shuttle scenes? Plus it moves the story along as you can go from point A to B immediately.

And how awesome are lightsabres? Extremely. Doesn't really make sense but its entertainment and sword fights always make great film/TV. Its the up close personal combat, person vs person, strength vs strength...its more compelling to see than a two person laser fight.

Not sure of your point here is. X-Wings, TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers, the Millennium Falcon are probably far more recognisable than the Enterprise. SW wins in that department.

You fail at counting. SW has Tarkin, the Emperor/Sidious, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, General Grevious, Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Jabba the Hutt...

R2 was probably more emotive than Spock. Plus R2 was plucky and loveable...in a rolling trash can sort of way.

They might look stupid but Star Wars at least puts out aliens that look alien.

In this case it is often a case of budget. I'm sure if TOS had the budget it wouldn't have had most of its aliens looked exactly like humans. Plus it is easier for costuming and the actor if their "alienness" is just a wrinkly nose or spots when they have to do 15 hours a day in front of a camera. So Trek is really hampered here in terms of it been a TV show that has to put out 20+ eps a year versus a movie series that releases every other year. SW will be doing the same but its the digital age now and technology/CGI will help it, whereas Trek didn't have the luxury for most of its run.

Heroes of their generation. I'd say far more people wanted to be Luke Skywalker than Kirk. Luke a more classic hero, he comes from nothing to be the champion of the galaxy...plus he has magic on his side. When I was 9 I can tell you that I wanted to be a Jedi not a Starfleet captain...seriously, laser swords, enough said!

Now, that's done I enjoy both franchises. I generally don't feel the need to compare them. They are completely different entities and you can like both, one or neither, it doesn't matter. All that matters is if you find them entertaining because that is what they are, entertainment.

I have noticed more pro-Wars Trekkies on this site than I have pro-Trek Jedis on the Force.net forums.

I am a fan of Star Wars and Star Trek, but I prefer Trek because I find it a bit more varied and cerebral. For years at school I thought I was the only guy who liked Trek more than Wars.

Star Wars is more popular because its film. Trek, although it has a film series, is primarily a TV franchise. Any big budget film is going to be seen by more people than a TV show. Maybe its not that people don't like Trek, they just haven't been exposed to it. I imagine if Star Wars had been originally done as a show with a story identical to the film series, it would be a niche franchise.

Star Wars eps 4-6 are equal to TOS seaseons 1-3. Solid. Mythic. Legendary. Pure awesome. The last run- while being legitimate- is a little sub-par at times, and attains to those moments of awe.

Ep 1-3 equal the spin-offs. Not bad. Kind of sucky sometimes but coolness is far from uncommon- sometimes reaching awesome. But never really able to join their porgentior to stand upon that lofty mountain summit in the cloud-shrouded heavens.

One can compare episodes 4-6 with TOS. Both are mythic, action-packed, and exciting, with fun characters. It's harder to compare Wars with the other Treks.

The new JJ film just wanted to bring back the fun and excitement of TOS. I don't get why some fans insist on saying it rips from Star Wars. SW didn't invent space opera!
