SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

From Deadline Hollywood:

Marc Webb, the (500) Days Of Summer director, has climbed to the top of the Sony Pictures' list to rebirth the Spider-Man franchise. While the studio has a wish list of star directors like James Cameron, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson, the emergence of Webb as director comes as a huge surprise. But Mike Fleming's sources tell him Webb met about the Spidey reboot with the pic's producers and executives looking to get the picture into production later this year for a Summer 2012 release. Why will the pic take so long? Because it's likely to be shot in 3-D, and Sony Pictures plans to make an announcement about that "at the appropriate time".

Though he has the perfect name for the job, Webb has no prior superhero experience. Then again, neither did Sam Raimi. And Chris Nolan was the director of Memento when he signed on for Batman Begins. Webb is also a newbie if Sony greenlights 3-D. But among directors, almost all would be.

What has Sony execs excited is the fact that (500) Days of Summer introduced a director with a grasp of how to depict the way young people think and feel. This is critical because the Jamie Vanderbilt script covers the formative years of a high school-aged Peter Parker, and that POV is as important as the action sequences. Especially after Sony and Sam Raimi retired the original Spidey franchise because they realized the film would have been same old/same old at a huge budget. Injecting new blood with an up-and-coming director is a bold stroke. Too bad Webb’s (500) Days star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is too old to play the high school-aged wall crawler. He’d be perfect.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I just kind find a reason to get excited about this reboot.
I really liked (500) Days of Summer, it was a surprise and refreshing splash to my 2009 cinematic choices.
What bums me the most is they let Raimi go cause he said the deadline for 2011 was too tight. Then they push this reboot back into 2012?!
Also, SONY has way too many fingerprints on scripts. Yes I know Spidey 3 was the most profitable in WW take, it was lowest domestic and the reason it was poorly scripted with Venom's involvement via studio fiat. Sony making Black Cat into Vultress, that revelation up thread is example enough to be nauseous at the reboot with SONY micromanaging the project.

First of all...Wes Anderson!?! On a studio's wishlist for Spider-Man? While I recognize Cameron was involved before, why would anyone think Fincher would be interested? And Sam Raimi did Darkman before Spider-Man...who's writing this shit!?!

:)

Raimi was also one of the producers of HERCULES and XENA, which had a definite comic-booky tone . . . .

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

While I recognize Cameron was involved before, why would anyone think Fincher would be interested?
Fincher was one of the directors (along with Ron Howard and Chris Columbus) who met with Sony about directing the first Spider-Man film. He talked about it in a Q&A session last year:

“I was asked if I might be interested in the first ‘Spider-Man,’ and I went in and told them what I might be interested in doing, and they hated it,” he said.

“The thing I liked about Spider-Man was I liked the idea of a teenager," continued Fincher, "the notion of this moment in time when you're so vulnerable yet completely invulnerable.”

The scene that soured him on the project, though, was Spider-Man’s origin story.

“I wasn't interested in the genesis, I just couldn't shoot somebody being bitten by a radioactive spider – just couldn't sleep knowing I'd done that,” stated the director.
Certainly doesn't sound like he'd be interested at this point, unless he had a change of heart or they let him skip the origin scene.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I'm aware that he met with Sony way back when, but it never seemed to me like a "it's a gonna' happen" meeting. More like a "Sony wants to meet with me about directing what? This should be good..." kinda' thing.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Fincher wanted to do the Death of Gwen Stacy as his Spider-Man movie, which really shouldn't surprise anyone...

They should hire Webb just for all the potential punning possibilities.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

^He's certainly well-named to direct a Spider-man movie ...

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I don't know if this has been discussed I can't be bothered reading 15 pages about a director who I wasn't really interested in (like his other work never been a big fan of the spidy movies). However now that we are rebooting and thus can't use the titles Spiderman, spiderman 2 etc, could we get the original idea of using the names of the comics, Amazing spiderman, web of spiderman etc etc?

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Spider-Man, Spider-Man...it's Spider-Man!

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

While I wasn't too enthusiastic about the Vulture, I really dislike reboots, let alone reboots after only three films (the latter two of which take place close to each other). The point of making sequels or further entries is to build on what came before.

Going back to high school seems fairly pointless, though I like the comic relief of comic book Flash Thompson I don't even know how well that would work in a film.
OTOH, there's the chance to include Mysterio  especially as this Spider-Man wouldn't have had his reputation seriously hurt at this point.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Grim news. He should have stuck to his guns and just given Venom a cameo at the end of the last movie then this one would have been a certainty even with the vulture or lizard playing second fiddle. I wanted to see the Black Cat. Really grim news.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

This is a disaster what good would the reboot do to the franchise didn't we see Peter Parker in high school in the first Spiderman film this is just so confusing
