Robert Zemeckis finds Beatles for 'Yellow Submarine'

It's "all together now" for the cast of Robert Zemeckis' upcoming Beatles feature. Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell are in negotiations to portray the members of the band in "Yellow Submarine," which the director is remaking for Disney.
The original 1968 animated movie was based on the music by the Beatles and featured a storyline wherein a soldier called Old Fred meets up with the Beatles and travels in a yellow submersible to Pepperland. Among the group's encounters are the music-hating Blue Meanies.
As with his recently released "A Christmas Carol," Zemeckis is making the movie using 3D performance-capture technology. The helmer, who also wrote the screenplay, is producing with his Imagemovers Digital partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey.
The Beatles tribute band the Fab Four will be motion-captured as the ensemble for the musical performance sequences though -- since actual Beatles music will be utilized (licensed from Sony/ATV and EMI-Capitol Records) -- they won't actually be performing the 16 songs used in the movie.

Hmmm. Placing bets now that "Only a Northern Song" will be cut from the remake and replaced with "She Loves You" or some other bullcrap. :p

I'm afraid this remake is going to destroy my memories of what a creepy movie the original one was. Was it just me? I though it was kind of creepy.

I wonder if there'll still be 45 minutes of various objects changing size and shape and pulsating different colors.

I think it's kind of sad that we'll once again be getting an animated Beatles movie without the voices of the actual Beatles.

Meh. I like the original one just fine. Although it would be cool to see that in 3D. Certainly, the remake will be less weird, less surreal, less psychedelic and less fun.

No, this is a terrible idea! I LOVE the original. The animation, the story, the music, it was all fabulous. My sole complaint is that the Beatles didn't voice themselves (but at least they appeared at the end).

Yyyyyeeeeeaaaah. Not up for this one. I love the Beatles, and Yellow Submarine is a trip, but this is completely unnecessary. This was like the 1978 TV remake of George Pal's "The Time Machine". It was unnecessary, it missed the whole point of the original, and it was terribly made. We don't need this.

I dont see the point. Its like trying to remake Snow White with all CGI. It will end up being completely different and unecessary.

God no. There's a point to that, it's a classic fairy tale, it's a rather natural topic for a new take. It's not at all a movie that basically ties in to the current popularity of a given band.

No, really, call me when they're remaking Elvis movies.

Why?

The original is just fine. Visually and musically it is a product of the time it comes from. Zemeckis will just fuck it up because he's just another baby-boomer trying to recapture his youth.

with the Snow White example, I meant get the same designs, dialogue & backgrounds as the original 1939 film and just redo them as cgi. They were actually going to do this with Peter Pan back when Eisner was still in charge. It was going to be scene for scene word for word exactly the same as the 1953 film but in cgi. Which is just pointless. Maybe a better example would be comparing it to a cgi remake of Nightmare Before Christmas?
