Cold weather strengthens grip in the South

steve1961

Lieutenant
MIAMI – Freakish cold weather continued to grip the South, with snow flurries spotted around Orlando and a record low set for Miami, and forecasters said Sunday that more of the same was expected.

About 100,000 tropical fish being raised on a fish farm in South Florida couldn't bear the cold. Michael Breen, 43, who owns Breen Acres Aquatics in the small town of Loxahatchee Groves just north of Miami, said temperatures dropped below 30 degrees overnight, leaving ice on his 76 ponds.
The ponds should be green because of algae bloom that feeds baby fish, he said.

"But all the ponds are crystal clear and fish are laying on the bottom. What we see on the surface died two days ago," he said, referring to the dead fish found floating Sunday morning.
Breen estimated he lost $535,000 in business because of the cold.

The National Weather Service issued a hard freeze warning for South Florida from Sunday night to Monday morning. A freeze watch will continue through Tuesday. Northern Florida residents will feel temperatures drop to the lower 20s and mid-teens.

On Saturday night, a temperature of 35 degrees set a record that had stood since 1970, said Joel Rothfuss with the National Weather Service in Miami.

And you say Global Warming excist? Its a bunch of hot air! only to get Politicans to tax the hell outta you and make you pay for clean air and water. Like Auto Emissons and gas taxes for example.

Yeah, no.

What does seem clear is that these oscillations have nothing to do with global warming, or, for that matter, global cooling. For one, they’re not new. And this winter’s cold has not been global. Santa, by North Pole standards, has been experiencing a balmy winter.

“Pretty much all of the Arctic is above normal,” said Dr. Walter Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. In some areas, the temperatures are as much as 15 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

In terms of global average temperature, this winter’s arctic oscillation “probably roughly cancels out,” Dr. Meier said. (In fact, last year ranked as the fifth-warmest year on record since 1850, the United Kingdom’s Met Office says.)

It's always been political and not science based. The science is settled on that.

You see there is a solution for engery crises. Its call Drilling in ANWR and building new refineries. But the left will never allow you to do that. And the left calls our way of life is causing global warming. The only way youll stop this economic madness is to VOTE REPUBLICAN! And get the liberals out of power and all this madness will stop!

I think you've mistaken this forum for one where politics is discussed (using "discussion" in its loosest sense, given this post). This is actually the forum where science and technology topics are discussed. Perhaps the "Science and Technology" forum title might have been a tip-off?

We have the Science and Technology to stop relying on forgein oil.We have here right on our land. We have more oil than Saudi Arabia has. If everyone joins the pickens plan we can turn our economy around. Boone Pickens has the solution and stop this global warming hype that Liberals tell us what we can or cannot do. Boone Pickens is right. If everyone would listen to him and vote the liberal elected officals out of office then we might jumpstart our economy and ignore europes liberal global warming hype. We can tell denmark you can talk about this fantasy of global warming but were not gonna listen to you.

Erratic and abnormal weather have long been considered to be symptoms of Global Warming. If anything, Miami freezing is a sign that Global Warming is actually getting worse, not non-existent.

Don't bring politics into sci tech discussions, steve1961. So no more posts like this. Save it for another forum. :bolian:

Didn't we kind of do away with the term "Global Warming" in favor of "Global Climate Change" anyway?

Just an FYI:

Those of us shivering through extended stretches of subfreezing temperatures might be forgiven for getting a bit impatient for the onset of more significant global warming. And, if you're reading Ars, chances are good that this describes you, as the US and Europe have been blanketed in an unusual chill. Ironically, as these inhabited parts shiver, the atmospheric system that's causing it, the Arctic Oscillation, has covered Greenland and the Arctic Ocean with air that's equally as extreme, but in the warm direction.

The folks who run the National Center for Atmospheric Research have a great rundown of the details of the AO Oscillation. In short, high pressure in the Arctic forces the jet stream south, and it drags cold air with it, chilling North American and northern Eurasia. In its opposite mode, those same regions tend to be much warmer. Right now, we're in such an extreme high-pressure event that the readings have run off the scale of NOAA's AO index. Fortunately for those hoping to warm up a bit, the AO is a weather event—it often changes states multiple times within a single season, and there's no clear evidence linking its behavior to climate trends.

You mean our earth pole has shifted already? :wtf:

Didn't we kind of do away with the term "Global Warming" in favor of "Global Climate Change" anyway?

Which is good because we need to all buy gas guzzling vehicles or we're doomed! Though 30 years from now we'll need to stop buying them and ruin the world economy or we're doomed!

30 Years of Global Cooling Are Coming, Leading Scientist Says

Latif thinks the cold snap Americans have been suffering through is only the beginning. He says we're in for 30 years of cooler temperatures -- a mini ice age, he calls it, basing his theory on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the world's oceans.

Latif, a professor at the Leibniz Institute at Germany's Kiel University and an author of the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, believes the lengthy cold weather is merely a pause -- a 30-years-long blip -- in the larger cycle of global warming, which postulates that temperatures will rise rapidly over the coming years.

I'm sure this guy isn't using tainted data. Maybe.

This has nothing to do with a pole shift. It's just the jet stream has moved south, a natural phenomenon that exists in the upper atmosphere. It has nothing to do with the magnetic poles of the Earth.

This guy is a joke! Wait until summer it isnt gonna get cooler though. Look how hot its in Africa and Australia now.

Interesting. Is there any indication of how long it will remain sitting over Greenland?

Yes, you've made your anti-science political agenda quite clear.
