"Chuck" and "Scrubs" are probably my two favorite shows for music. They both actually exposed me to several new bands.

I caught the first ~20 minutes before going to work this morning: I loved the use of "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)"

I voted Big Mike. A little too much Chuck - Sarah schlock but overall pretty darn good. Looks like it will be a good season.

I voted Big Mike too, as these two episodes didn't quite reach the elite status of the show's best episodes. Gotta leave room for the absolute best...

Why is Big Mike ahead of Chuck in the poll choices, anyway? :D

I've only watched the first episode so far, but I liked it a lot. I'm a bit surprised to see a lot of negative reactions to it across the internet.

The only thing that really bothers me is the way Anna and Emmitt were simply erased from the series. I think losing both characters hurts the show in different ways, and I'm not a fan at all of how it was done. Emmitt gets a death that seems just too cold for the comedic nature of his character, and Anna is simply never seen again. Hopefully she can return later this season, or the next if the show is lucky enough to be renewed. She was never a huge part of the show (I think she appeared in less than half the episodes last season) but as of now, it doesn't feel right the way she has simply vanished.

I liked pretty much everything else. I don't have too many other comments right now, but I do want to mention Chuck's new addiction to cheese balls, and how amusing I found that.

Yeah, it sucks to lose some of the secondary characters, but if that was probably because of budget cuts. And I will take no Emmitt and Anna over no Chuck.

Agreed about no Emmitt and Anna over no Chuck. It's not like they got rid of the entire Buy More staff, which was one of the rumors flying around when the show was in renewal talks.

I seem to recall Julia Ling joining another series but IMDB doesn't agree, showing what looks like a bunch of movies in 2010 on her resume.

Oh I definitely agree as well. I realize that it almost certainly had to be done in order to bring the show back at all. But that doesn't entirely mitigate the bad taste for me. Still, it's awesome to have the show back.

I looked her up on IMDB and holy cow! Not sure if her bio is all true (since it is IMDB), but she is one talented woman.

Already disappointed. This doesn't feel like anything new or exciting yet.

One thing I've learned from Chuck is that the first couple episodes of the seasons tend to have kind of a "meh" quality to them. That said, I enjoyed these..

The tricky thing about season premiere episodes is that they often have a lot of "housekeeping" to deal with:

You have to wrap up any loose ends or ramifications from the previous season finale. ( "I can't believe Oscar is really dead . . . ")

You have to deal with any awkward cast changes. ("Did you hear that Susie was transferred to Argentina, and have you met her replacement Steve?")

And you have to reestablish the premise for any first-time viewers. ("Wait a second, are you telling me the Pope and a gorilla have secretly teamed up to fight crime?")

Even good shows are not immune to these difficulties. BUFFY often took a while to get going every season. Ditto THE 4400 . . . .

And you have to reestablish the premise for any first-time viewers. ("Wait a second, are you telling me the Pope and a gorilla have secretly teamed up to fight crime?")

I now want to see that. We could call it "Kong and Katholic."

Chuck is where he is because he was just your average nerd, and Big Mike where he is because he was Chuck's cool boss who let him do pretty much whatever he wants. He is the nerd guru. Look at the advice he gave Morgan for instance. And he was in Terminator 2 too (the mental ward attendant with the keys. Arnie put him thru a window)

I was thinking I'd have to retire Emmett's name from the poll, but decided to add a (R.I.P.) to it instead to just reinforce it being the worst.

I gotta go with "Morgan" on this one. I know the old premise had worn out its welcome but I don't think the new one works. It hinges on Chuck's sudden desire to be a spy - hey remember when he desperately wanted to get out of the spy biz? - so badly that he would dump Sarah for his new career.

But his new career requires that he, at minimum, be able to shoot an evildoer to save his own life. And it would probably help a whole lot to be able to do that under any circumstances, in cold blood. Most likely he should be prepared to murder an entirely innocent person, hopefully only under extraordinary circumstances, but this is the CIA. If Chuck can't bring himself to do any of those things - and he couldn't even do it when he knew there were blanks in the gun - then he is just deluding himself and gave up Sarah for nothing.

The motivation that he's doing it for the greater good doesn't wash because Chuck is too fantasy based. If he were stopping al Qaeda from blowing up planes, I could buy him dumping Sarah (and no doubt she could buy it, too). But I can't buy him doing that to thwart cheeseball villains two steps removed from a Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon.

They've taken the sweet, charming, spunky nerd and turned him into a childish idiot who would rather chase juvenile spy fantasies than commit to a grownup relationship. Blerg. I'll stick with it for a while, but I'm afraid they've frakked up what was once a very nice little show.

Oh there is one thing I'll hang in for...the odd notion that Chuck might become dangerous because of his new persona. In which case, are we right back to the old, "Casey's gonna whack him when he gets outta line" routine? At least it's different tho I don't know how it fits into the whole picture.

1. It's not sudden; it actually plays right into why he didn't want to be an agent. The arc he goes through in "Chuck Versus the Colonel" and "Chuck Versus the Ring" lays the groundwork for why he chose to accept the Intersect 2.0; in particular, his sudden lack of direction upon quitting the Buy More and his new understanding that he can be good at being an agent. "How many times do you have to be a hero before you realize you are a hero?"

2. He didn't dump Sarah for it. Sarah dumped him when she realized he wasn't willing to run away with her.

I voted 'big Mike'.

The first episode was MEH.
The seconds episode, however, was classic Chuck greatness.

So the grade is an average.

I decided to rewatch those 2 episodes before today episode and write some thoughts about them.

First of all i think the mistake was to put single poll for those 2 episodes since despite some character continuity they were mostly separate stories and secondly the reaction to them was quite different, with first getting a bit "meh" reaction and on second opinions were mostly very positive.

As far as my opinion goes, while i think second episode was better, i wasn't so down on the Pink Slip.
Yes the pacing was a bit off, with too much jumping back and forth, also they reseted too much imo and the relationship drama between Chuck and Sarah was a bit too sentimental in few instances, but there were quite few scenes that i liked a lot :
- Big Lebowski homage
- Sarah emerging from the pool in white bikini was great eye candy
- Emmet execution was done in great style and with great music
- i liked the whole guitar scene a bit too
- whole escape scene in Mexico had the cheese 80s movie style to it, but i liked it

The second episode was great tho, the only thing i didn't quite liked was "the talk" during mission, but other than that, everything else was superb. I especially loved the Chuck/Sarah fighting practice scene, one of my favorite dramatic scenes on Chuck with an amazing music background. Overall this episode is in my top 10 favorite Chuck episodes.

So ratings are : "Chuck" for the first episode + "Awesome!" for second and overall Awesome!, just because i'm so glad Chuck is back. BTW the third episode was great too.
