Of course, the answer is "God Save the Queen" as Scotland represents one part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. :p

But Scotland, like the other countries that make up the UK, has its own unofficial national anthem usually reserved for sporting events where Scotland plays as its own team.

In recent decades, "Flower of Scotland" has been used for major sporting events in favour of "Scotland The Brave" - but a recent poll by Scottish athletes saw "Flower of Scotland" voted overwhelmingly as the anthem of choice for the Scotland team at this year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi:

Scottish athletes have voted overwhelmingly for Flower of Scotland to be the official national anthem at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Scotland the Brave had been used as the anthem for Scottish competitors who won gold medals at previous games.

But the athletes voted by 211 to 15 in favour of Flower of Scotland to be adopted for this year's event.

A shortlist of four songs, which also included Loch Lomond and Highland Cathedral, had originally been chosen.

Athletes due to compete at the Delhi games were then asked to choose between Flower of Scotland and Scotland the Brave, which had been the two most popular tunes from the shortlist in a vote taken in November.

The competitors from 17 different made their decision after gathering for a camp at Stirling University.

Flower of Scotland has been used by the national football and rugby teams since the early 1990s, but the Commonwealth Games team had continued to use Scotland the Brave, which was first adopted as its anthem in 1958.

What do you all think?
Has "Flower of Scotland" outgrown its Bannockburn-esque anti-English sentiments?
Should the stirring "Highland Cathedral" be considered?
What about shameless sentimentality of "Loch Lomond" or "Auld Lang Syne" my dears? (bizarrely both songs have been considered as anthems at some point)
Or a Burns-inspired theme like "A Man's A Man..." or the additionally Wallace-inspired "Scots Wha Hae"?
Or should we stick to good old "Scotland The Brave"?
Or what about something different?

What would your unofficial Scottish national anthem be?

The summertime is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather

Will you go lassie go
And we'll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go lassie go

I love that song. :)

^ I've been living in this city too long! That is great.

I do like Highland Cathedral and Loch Lomond but neither is really an anthem. It probably does come down to Scotland the Brave or Flower of Scotland, and of those I prefer the latter.

Bon Scott's favorite anthem: The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond.
His nickname when he was a kid was The Bonny Scott.

I put Highland Cathedral but Flower of of Scotland is just as good. If there were a permanant one chosen I would hope that it had two things: Feelings and not a dirgr!

Am I misremembering or haven't we had a discussion about Scotland choosing a national anthem before? Like a couple of years ago? I could have sworn there was even a contest to pick it.

As long as this verse isn't included:

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,May by thy mighty aid,Victory bring.May he sedition hush, and like a torrent rush,Rebellious Scots to crush,God save the King.It can be used as a National Anthem all it likes. Though I'd be happy to replace the national anthem of any multi-cultural country that seems so fixated on God saving anyone.

I would walk five hundred miles and I would walk five hundred more...

You know what... if it were my call, I'd pick that. It's upbeat, it's well known, everyone in the country (even those who hate it) know the lyrics better than Flower of Scotland (which always trails off at any event around the third line) and it was, oddly enough, the first song my daughter ever heard.

I nominate "Donald Where's Your Trousers?" :p

This would be second in the list for comedy value.

However... when it comes to national anthems I have to agree with Billy Connolly on a few points:
