films in 2010: I might stay home

I know we had an avatar contest recently about this but.....

Nothing on this list of sci films for this year really excites me. Nothing as bold or groundbreaking as Avatar or as Nostalgic as Transformers or G.I. Joe, save for the new Tron film, which looks awesome. The Wolf Man is soemthing kinda cool, even though I'm not a fan of horror, but it's style of actually showing a reall good transformation a la American Werewolf in London mixed with that simple but haunting scene in the trialer of the woman scared out of her mind hiding behind a tree might make me check it out. But there's nothing that I just hafta see, save for Tron Legacy.

I was just thinking about this the other day, as well. It just doesn't seem like a strong slate of films to look forward to. About all that jumps out at me is Clash of the Titans, and Iron Man 2, then you have to go all the way to the end of the year to get the new Potter and Narnia films and, of course, Tron.

Then there's the slate of animated films including Shrek and Toy Story. But even when you add those in, it's a pretty thin list.

2009 was to my mind nothing less than a banner year for science fiction. And it's probably set a good precedent to follow; three of the four good movies of that year may very well get sequels and the best will result in that film's director cranking out another sci-fi flick.

Despite its semi-iconic status, it doesn't look like 2010 will live up to that at all. On another page someone linked a PKD adaptation, and it's got Matt Damon, but it's also of his short stories (is there a single good PKD film based on one of his short stories? They seem to be 'take this idea AND JUST ADD ACTION' generally speaking).

The new Nolan film is the new Nolan film, though.

I forgot about Clash of the Titans, thjat looks fun and I love the original. And of course unless the casting director sucks, I'll be able to see the beautiful Andromeda!

Clash of the Titans, Iron Man 2, and Harry Potter are the only movies that I will venture out to see.

2009 sort of reminded me of 1982, 1986, 1996, 1999 and 2005 which were really strong years for sci-fi and other genre flicks.

While this year seems to be a dud (and a good way to take a breather and do other things like saving money ) 2011 looks to be another banner year.

I have high hopes for Predators. I think it will surprise a lot of people. The script sounds solid and hardcore and the cast is pretty strong. If Rodriguez can find the proper tone it'll be an awesome movie.

Also, does anyone else find it odd that Red Dawn is on the OP's list? It isn't really sci fi, other than being some sort of alternative history.

It kinda looks like 2010 will be the year of sci-fi for the thinking man, instead the flashy CGI flick with nearly no story.

Frankly, I think it's cool.
It shows Hollywood is making sci-fi films that's bringing a higher quality of actor but trying to bring back an older audience they're loosing with tween flicks like "New Moon" and to an extent "Harry Potter".

District 9 and Avatar are good 2009 sci-fi movies? What else was there?

Oh yeah the Star Wars-ination of Star Trek. So three good movies make a great year for sci-fi? That is sad.

Well, I gotta say "District 9" & "Avatar" both had quality stories.
Trek was just plain fun.

I just think quality this year was better than quantity.

I think they helped way the bad taste left behind from "Wolverine" & "Transformers 2".

It would have, actually. Now while the following is true:

Moon is the altar in which I worship. If you have not seen the film you neglect to bask in the Holy Light that is our father, Duncan Jones.
Amen!

Even without Moon, which was the best of the four good films, 2009 would still be a good year for sci-fi, because the remaining three films were pretty good. And there were three of them. And it's not often I can say one year gave me three good sci-fi films.

Is that sad? Eh, maybe, but I takes what I can get.
