Unification and Relics are good picks for someone who is a TOS fan new to TNG, but very bad picks for someone who is new to Star Trek.

If you watched all of the original episodes, and you really want to get the "full" TNG experience, I would recommend watching all of TNG from the beginning. You may find Season 1 a little hard to get through, but as you watch the series and characters evolve, I think you will get the full "flavor" of the show.
I started re-watching Trek over the summer beginning with ENT, then TOS, then the TOS movies, and am in the early part of TNG Season 6 right now. While some episodes were a chore to sit and watch again, I'm really enjoying the experience, and will soon integrate DS9 then VOY, as well as the TNG movies.
If you don't have the time/ability to watch all of TNG, then startrekwatcher has a fantastic list.

Q Who? (since this is the first one to have the Borg in it),
Yesterday's Enterprise,
The Best of Both Worlds (it has the Borg in it, need I say more?),
Family (good introspective episode),
Future Imperfect (no particular reason, except that I quite like this episode, and it's absolutely priceless to hear Riker yell "Shut up!" at Picard!),
I, Borg,
The Inner Light,
Chain of Command,
Tapestry,
Descent,
All Good Things
