Based on the True Story of Michael Orr and how he was adopted by the Tuohy family, played football at a private school then Ole Miss, and finally the Baltimore Ravens.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a little over the top in the middle when all the coaches start their recruiting, but overall I love this movie. It's heartwarming, funny, and has some great acting from the main cast.

Great way to start off the new year with movies! I have a goal of 365 this year, by the way.

I gather this thread is for movies we see at the cinema, on TV or on DVD?

Avatar [B+] (might be raised to A-) - great special effects and acting on a familiar story.

Braindead - one of the films Peter Jackson made in New Zealand before someone in Hollywood gave him tons of money to make LOTR. This movie is so idiotic, disgusting and bloody that it turns into a great black comedy, with romance, family values and zombies. Featuring a priest who kicks ass for the Lord, nazi veterinarian, zombies having sex, zombies being chopped by a lawnmower and a zombie baby put in blender, among other such things.

Even though I had already seen this film, Sherlock Holmes serves as my first film in a theater for 2010.

I enjoyed this movie a lot too (more than "Lord of the Rings" even). The only thing I didn't like about it is how ugly it was. I don't mean anything that happens in it. I enjoyed all the over-the-top gore. I just mean it looked really cheap in terms of the cinematography. Poor film school student cheap.

I know it was low budget, but of all the early low budget movies of directors who would go on to greatness, this was the cheapest-looking one of all. The Evil Dead movies looked pristine compared to this. But that's only a minor complaint. I still enjoyed the movie thoroughly from start to finish. The lawnmower scene and the scene with the baby in the park are classic.

I'm going to see Avatar tomorrow at IMAX Theater here at The Mall of Georgia, but their is so many people trying to see this movie, that all showing were sold out. All but one was already sold today for Sunday's shows, so I'm having to go a 08:30 AM performance, which is first time that I have gone to see a movie so early in the AM. The good thing at least, I'll be seeing it at IMAX Theater.:techman::bolian::)

I caught up with a bunch of movies on Sky Movies HD over the last couple of days:

Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) - the first half hour is very funny, but I thought it went downhill thereafter.

Tropic Thunder (2008) - some mildly amusing bits, but overrated; RDJ's Oscar nom wasn't deserved in my opinion.

Mean Girls (2004) - a fun film; sad how Lindsay Lohan went from being so pretty, fresh-faced, and buxom to being a thin, haggard junkie in just a few years.

The Mist (2007) - well-acted, but ultimately a shaggy dog story.

Underdog (2007) - a reasonably fun canine superhero comedy; not great by any means, but better than its low IMDB rating suggests.

Death Race (2008) - diverting enough on a dumb fun level, although the ending is abrupt and unsatisfactory.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) - preposterous, but kinda fun. Nic Cage's hairpiece was moderately distracting rather than downright awful.

Babylon A.D. (2008) - mediocre rather than awful, although the best actors (Gerard Depardieu and Charlotte Rampling) give the worst perfomances. It's kind of like a grim, low rent version of The Fifth Element.

It's not that the movie went downhill, it's just that once again, Smith made the same movie as before. I like his movies very much but they tend to deal about the same things: nerds/geek sorting their lives out and entering adulthood. OK, Kev, we got it. I just hope that the main characters of Cop-Out are not old geeks sorting their lives out.

I don't mind directors exploring the same theme as long as the material works each time at bat. For me the first half hour of Zack and Miri worked, but the gags built around them actually making the porno mostly missed the mark.

Cop Out is the first Kevin Smith film where he's working from a script written by someone else, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

The trailer looked pretty funny to me. It also appears to be his most polished work to date at least visually.
