The 00s and the 10s

john titor

Captain
What would be your summation of the 00s, now a platonic decade and your predictions for this one?

Me, 00s started off happy and shiny and then descended into Romanic self indulgences and the consequences thereof. This decade will be marked by trying to get out of recession and competing in a multipolar superpower world.

The 19th century scientists du jour stated that if [p] the magneto sphere existed and [q] the bio sphere existed then [r] the noo sphere, that is the the sphere generated by mental activity as a consequence of q and r, should also exist. Henceforth the moodiness embodied by the past few years would explain why the excellent weather of first few years of the decade were replaced by cold winters and laclustre summers. In fact if Buffy the Vampire Slayer defined the first half of the decade and BSG the latter half then we have a cultural televisual analogue for our decline as a society. Perhaps this new decade will be something of a roaring 20s.

We sure had some great World Series in this last decade...

2000: Subway Series - Mets v. Yankees! love the thing with Clemens v. Piazza. :lol:
2001: Yankees v. D-backs. Poor Mo Rivera blew that save in the final game. But it has an upside - a friend of his is alive today because the Yanks lost. (can't remember the guy's name, but he caught a different flight home than he would have if they'd won, in which case he would have been on that one plane that crashed in Queens)
2002: Angels finally make it!
2003: After that great Aaron Boone home run in the ALCS (AFAIK, Red Sox fans call him Aaron Fucking Boone, just like they do with Bucky Fucking Dent :guffaw: ), the Yanks got dinged by the Marlins in the actual series. :(
2004: Ah...I'm trying to forget that one. :p
2005: White Sox win their first since 1917!
2006: Cardinals get to win the series in their (then) brand new stadium. AFAIK, the Yankees are the only other team to do that.
2007: Next! ;)
2008: Damn, I was rooting for the Rays. Oh well, it was still exciting. Especially the final game of the ALCS...
2009: YANKEES WIN! :techman:

I always thought that the decade started with the year ending in 1 and ended with the year ending in 0; thus the 1991 - 2000, 2001 - 2010, 2011 - 2020, etc.

^ I always say the decade starts with the 0. (Unlike centuries, which don't.)

I mean, look at it this way: The decade of, say, the 1980's. That refers to all years that have "198x" in them. You can't have 1990 be part of the 80's, since 1990 has no 80 in it! ;) Similarly, 1980 can't be part of the 70's, since there is no 70 in 1980. And the 00's can't include 2010, since there is no 00 there.

2000 wasa godd year, the latter half of 2001 not good.

Things seemed okay until 2003, and it's been downhill since.

Obama's and (Aussie PM) Rudd's elections are the bright points that may lead to a better decade ahead. One must journey in hope rather than despair.

My summation?

The 00s sucked all around.

I would say the next decade can't get any worse, but I hate to jinx myself. ;)

In theory it could with a lost decade or global war. That said the 00s were epitomized by crassness and unprecedented cultural vacuousness. So I hope the 10s will be better.

By the way, john titor: What do we ultimately end up calling the 00's? I figure since you're from 2038, maybe you'd know. ;)

It was a mix for me.

Seven years ago my mom died. Now, you might wonder why a man in his late 30's is crying over his mommy. She wasn't just my mom, she was my Star Trek buddy. She was the person who introduced me to Star Trek, having been a fan herself of TOS' original NBC run. In fact, the one bad thing about seeing the new movie this past summer was, as I was watching it in the theater, several times the thought "Mom would have loved this" crossed my mind. She also missed the end of ENTERPRISE, a show she loved (our one disagreement on Star Trek).

The good: after years of lonliness, I finally found a girlfriend. Ironically, a friend for several years who my mom kept telling me "you two should get together". Too bad she didn't live to see that.

So I guess, like any time, the past decade has had it's ups and downs for me personally. I am looking forward to the 2010's with hope and, dare I say it, optimism. Believe me, I've NEVER said that before.

Dude, my mother died in 2008, and I'm 51, and still miss her every day. She did a hell of a lot for me, and was a great person. Those of us who don't have them any more, with a few unusual exceptions, miss them. You're far from alone. :)

+1 = good
0 = fair/neutral or good & bad
-1 = bad

2000 = 0
2001 = +1
2002 = +1
2003 = +1
2004 = 0
2005 = -1
2006 = 0
2007 = +1
2008 = +1
2009 = 0

Overall, on a scale of -10 to +10: +4

Almost half-way between fair and good.

It's way too soon for me to predict anything about this decade. Three hours in, I don't have enough to go on.

Ain't that the truth! I lost my mom in 2009, and with her passing I lost both my best friend and the last member of my immediate family.

As I result, the 2000s can only be "Worst. Decade. Ever." for me, so the only place I can go is up.

Considering when the decade began I was only 14, I'll say the whole thing was a productive and dramatic learning experience.

I always thought that the decade started with the year ending in 1 and ended with the year ending in 0; thus the 1991 - 2000, 2001 - 2010, 2011 - 2020, etc.

Chronologically that's correct :cool:, which is why the masses think that decades begin with a year ending in 0 :scream:.

There was no year 0 A.D., so the first decade had to consist of years 1 through 10.

The nerdiness of this appeals to me greatly.

The nerdiness of this does not.

So going with the nerd technique that does appeal:

2000: +1
2001: +1
2002: +1 (this one actually deserves a +2)
2003: +1 (and this one too, probably)
2004: -1
2005: +1
2006: +1
2007: 0 (well, maybe an +0.5)
2008: +1 (this one's probably a +0.5 too, in reality)
2009: 0 (and this one)

Ignoring the parentheses, that's net total of +6. Not bad for the decade. Though I dislike the trend of the second half of the decade.

My prediction/hope is a neutral rating for 2010 and then good stuff thereafter. Fingers crossed!

There was no year 0 A.D., so the first decade had to consist of years 1 through 10.

The existence or lack thereof of a year 0 has nothing to do with decades.

All a decade is, is the 10 years that share a commonality - i.e. "1980's" is all years with 198x in them. Like I said, 1990 can't be part of the 80's, since there is no 80 in 1990. Etc.

Thanks, and I didn't mean to say that I feel alone. It's just that for some odd reason, I've taken some ribbing from people on that subject. Of course, these people are mostly insensitive jerks. Or motherless idiots.

Or both. I just find it weird that I'm called a mama's boy for missing her on occasion almost a decade after her death.

By the way, john titor: What do we ultimately end up calling the 00's? I figure since you're from 2038, maybe you'd know. ;)

The teenies unfortunately
Well, now, that just makes no sense whatsoever. And I guess we'll call the 10's "the roaring twenties", eh? :p

Who calls you that? I only ask because I think I may want to punch them in the mouth at some point. :klingon:

My mom is alive, but I can only wish that I had a mom worth missing when she eventually goes. People with good moms should be more thankful than they are.
